Glory Forever! Vol. XXI, No. 4 September - October, 2013 Bishop Gerald Blesses St. Gabriel School and Convent Sunday, October 20th was an historical day for the Holy Protection of Mary Eparchy of Phoenix. On that day, following Divine Liturgy, Bishop Gerald solemnly blessed and dedicated St. Gabriel Catholic School in Las Vegas, Nevada, the first parochial school to be opened within our Eparchy. Bishop also blessed St. Gabriel Convent that is adjacent to the school property and currently houses the two Sisters of St Basil the Great assigned to the school. Approximately 180 persons were in attendance for this eparchial milestone. St. Gabriel Catholic School first opened its doors to receive students in August, At that time, there was an enrollment of about 15 students in grades K 3. This year, the enrollment is over 70 students in grades K 4. Each coming year a new grade will be added until the school reaches its capacity. Formerly a research facility for scientists interested in working for the American space program, the present school building is being leased for 10 years with the option to buy at the end of the 10 year period. Construction of an additional classroom building will begin in early 2014, followed immediately by the construction of a gymnasium and a church that will seat 434 people. It is expected that all three buildings will be completed by the summer of The school is a private corporation formed by parishioners of St. Gabriel s Byzantine Catholic Church, the purpose of which is to teach Catholic doctrine based on an Eastern Catholic approach to Cont d on page 2 September - October, 2013 Procession to the school for the blessing. Two Basilian Sisters assigned to the school, Sister Susan Harvey and Sister Joanne Lickvar, also share that responsibility with Father Marcus as they minister as educators within the school community. Under the very capable leadership of the Principal, Mrs. Octavia Houtekier- Boyd, and the dedicated faculty and staff, the children learn about God and grow in their faith as they study His creation in an inviting atmosphere of love and respect for each other. The desired outcome of this educative environment in this life is to produce good, honest and knowledgeable citizens for our world so that they may enjoy the blessings of eternal life in the next! Basilian Provincial, Sr. Seraphim, (middle), attended the ceremonies and the dinner at a local country club. 4 Pilgrims Converge on Olymnpia Bishop introduces to the parish their new pastor, Fr James Lane The cooks prepare the barbeque Submitted by Carol Perez As in years past, St. George Byzantine Catholic Church hosted the 2013 pilgrimage to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Shrine. In 2000, Bishop George M Kuzma officially designated it as a pilgrimage site. This beautiful shrine is blessed to have an icon of Our Lady which came to us from Italy, and we have reports of at least one miracle after praying to the Theotokos at the Shrine. The pilgrimage held on August 9 and 10 drew pilgrims from Oregon, California, Idaho, and Washington. The pilgrimage attracts people even some non-catholics because of the beautiful liturgies and activities designed to spiritually uplift all present. This year we were excited to welcome our new Pastor, Fr. James Lane, who gave a light-hearted talk after the noon meal. Our Bishop, the Most Reverend Gerald Dino, celebrated the Saturday Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. Concelebrants were Right Reverend Joseph Stanichar, Fr. Laurence Gosselin (Melkite), Fr. Abraham Miller (Ukrainian), Fr. William O Brien, Fr. Frank Knusel, and Fr. Michael Mandelas concelebrated. This beautiful outdoor Divine Liturgy is the highlight of this pilgrimage. We welcomed overnight campers who always enjoy the breakfast hosted by St. George s young people. The children who attend do not go unnoticed. We include a children s procession and Akathist, and offer games and other activities. St. George hosts the noon meal, prepared by parishioners. This outdoor meal is not just a meal, but is a time that pilgrims share their faith journey with others and simply enjoy the company of other Christians. 6 Phoenix Eparchy Represented at Uniontown Pilgrimage Submitted by Mary Lynn Cihak My husband, Bob, and I flew from Seattle, WA to attend the 79th annual pilgrimage to Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. The pilgrimage, hosted by the Sisters of St. Basil at Mount Macrina monastery, is attended by thousands of Byzantine Catholics from the area and surrounding states. We made the journey at the strong recommendation of my son, Subdeacon Michael Bezruchka, who is completing his final year at Saints Cyril & Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh. Praying with a large number of other Byzantine Catholics from the Metropolia inspired us as my son said it would! Two full days of liturgies, processions and beautiful chant in honor of Our Lady were a great blessing. We highly recommend this pilgrimage. 7 Your presence lights up Mount St. Macrina and the shadow of your being casts a peaceful glow over the Mount throughout the year. Sister Seraphim Olsafsky, OSBM, Provincial Bishop Gerald and former parishioners from Linden, NJ. editor s note: The excellent article on the previous page could have been written by any number of different people. Everyone receives different opportunities of grace as they come to Uniontown for the first time or fortieth time. They meet old friends, create new friendships and mostly they are given the opportunity to sing at the many liturges, akathists, Panachidas, molebens, and above all else, receive the mystery of the Eucharist. They could have their confession heard, and be blessed during the healing services. I have been coming to these pilgrimages with my grandparents, parents and now with friends as we meet relatives for reunions. It would be such a joy to meet new people at this pilgrimage, especially in 2014 when the 80th pilgrimage at Mount St. Macrina will be celebrated. Bishops chanting the Panachida Service. 8 Duchovny Dom - Our New Monastery in Oregon Submitted by Judit Crow Brother Andrew The first pilgrims to the newly established monastery were iconographers. They visited on Sept 15, and took some of the pictures listed on this page. The iconographers were from the icon workshops at St. John's in Seattle, WA and one from St Anne's in San Luis Obispo, CA. The Monastery is in NE Oregon near the town of Weston. There is still more remodeling work to be done but they are getting settled little by little. Brother Les Rougutt was officially received as a monastic candidate on August 24, 2013 at St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church in Seattle, WA. Brother Les, whose sponsor was Dr. Michael Matriotti, has joined the Duchovny Dom Monastery with the Rt. Rev. Joseph Stanichar and Br. Andrew. May God grant the monks many happy years there! 9 Fontana Parish Refurbishes Church and Hall Submitted by Fr. Joe Hutsko This summer there have been some improvements made at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Fontana, CA. In mid-july the exteriors of the church building and parish hall were repaired and painted, including the blue dome and cross atop it. The wall and wrought iron fencing around the property were also painted. Along with exterior improvements all the woodwork inside the church including the pews, doors and icon screen were cleaned and oiled. Outside the rectory red block pavers patio was laid by parishioners and friends of the parish. The patio will help to alleviate dust from blowing into the rectory during the dry season of the year. There was also extensive cleaning of the parish hall kitchen, including ovens and other appliances. Much work has also been done on landscaping around the parish grounds. With the Year of Faith upon us, St. Nicholas Church has brightened up the exterior and interior of our buildings with the intent of now implementing an evangelization program to bring others to worship here at St. Nicholas. Many of the neighbors have made positive remarks on the beautification of the neighborhood with the brightening up of the parish property. Father Joe Hutsko resting in the front courtyard. 10 Hope: A World Afire! Religious Ed Congress Theme The annual Los Angeles Religious Education Congress will be held from March 14-16, 2014 at the Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA. The keynote addresses and workshops will center about the them Hope: A World Afire! Reflecting upon this theme, Sr. Edith Prendergast, RSC speaks of the Transfiguration of our Lord. We too are drawn into that incredible experience. In the presence of the HOLY, we become shining stars of hope...we commit to light fires of hope and set our world ablaze. Famed speakers include The Very Rev. Robert Barron, MA,STD, and Rev. Robert Rolheiser, OMI. Titles for their presentations are Seven Essentials for the New Evangelization and Fear and Her Many Children: As Dampening Our Hope and Our Fire, respectively. With over 200 speakers, 300 workshops and 250 exhibitors, Religious Education Congress 2014 is an invitation to grow in faith and in knowledge. Why not join the 40,000 anticipated participants? Registration is simply $70. Check the website: www. recongress.org for further information. Please visit our Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix booth at the Religious Ed Congress Exhibition Hall in the Anaheim Convention Center, booth space # Creating a Sacred Environment When the USCCB (United States Catholic Conference of Bishops) promulgated The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, new levels of challenge, concern and awareness were raised throughout our parishes. In addition to the writing of Policies and Procedures by each Eparchy for the protection of minors, each Eparchy also conducted Safe Environment Formation sessions; background checks and annual audits. All of this is being accomplished with due diligence and Christian love. Emphasis initially was placed primarily upon addressing the issue of sexual misconduct; and now, in the course of time, our Eparchy takes further initiative to respond to the unfolding needs of this present day with regard to protecting our minors by addressing verbal abuse, internet and social networking, bullying, pornography, violence etc. Hey, get off my haystack Then, little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, Let Father Bob Rankin surrounded by his assistants. the little children come to Me and do not forbid them, for of such is the kingdom of heaven. (Mt. 19:13-14) Jesus is the prime Model of Love for each of us, especially the little ones. Jesus is the prime Model of Love for our homes, our parishes, our schools and our work places. His love and presence creates sacred space. Perhaps a corporate and personal exam is necessary to look honestly at the ways in which we create either a sacred, or profane, space and environment. 11 Sr. Celestine Falls Asleep In The Lord YOUTHFUL AND ENERGETIC SPIRIT While doing a favor for another Sister, Sister Celestine (Margaret) Petruska winged her way to the Lord in the afternoon of Tuesday, September 10, The previous day she had just returned from a week s vacation with her good friend Sister Christopher. Neither she nor anyone expected that this vacation would be a prelude to the eternal vacation which awaited her the next day. Without a doubt, she carried with her into eternity that same joyful spirit with which she returned to the monastery. The daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Varhol) Petruska, She entered the Sisters of St. Basil from St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Uniontown, PA on January 26, She pronounced her First Vows on December 9, 1948 and made her Perpetual Profession on August 28, 1953 in the presence of the late Bishop Daniel Ivancho. Sister Celestine celebrated her birthday with great enthusiasm just two weeks before her eternal birthday. One could truly say of her that she was 93 years young. Her youthful and energetic spirit was the hallmark of her life. If she had any regret, it would have been that she had to retire from active ministry due to health issues in Sister served in a variety of ministries. Starting out as many in the community did, she served as teacher and principal for a good number of years; then as Novice Directress and as a member of the Renewal Team. Still in ministry full time, she served first as Assistant Chancellor and then as Finance Officer in the Eparchy of Phoenix for fourteen years. Retirement was not in Sister s vocabulary, so after a brief hiatus, she was assigned to St. Therese parish in St. Petersburg, FL where she worked as pastoral assistant until her return to the monastery in February of In the last two years of her life, Sister Celestine made herself useful wherever she could. Visiting the Sisters who were residents at Mount Macrina Manor to check on their personal needs was one of the services she enjoyed doing. Submitted by Sr. Margaret Kapusnak Without a doubt, it can be said that Sister Celestine enjoyed life to the fullest; she valued her religious vocation; she was faithful in all that was required of her as a Sister of St. Basil, and she shared her joy in life with her Sisters in community, her family and her friends. Never flagging in her interests, she took up violin lessons in the latter years of her life, and she was heard practicing on her violin the morning before she died in preparation for her violin lesson later in the day. Metropolitan William, in his reflections, noted that this was a bittersweet day for all. There is joy because Sister Celestine has gone to her heavenly reward; but there is sadness, since we will no longer be able to share in the vitality of spirit which Sister brought into our lives. In conversations with Sister, she would say that her years in the West were the best years of her life. She especially took pleasure in the sunny weather which enabled her to be outdoors when she was not at work, and she did work very hard. Her work, however, did not in the least stop her from finding ways to bring joy to others. One of the ways she did that was to invite her co-workers or the senior residents of the condos to take time to party. If you did not know how to do the hokey-pokey before Sister Celestine came to Phoenix, you surely did once Halloween came around. In a more serious vein, referring to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Most Precious Cross of the Lord, Metropolitan William noted that Sister Celestine responded to the Gospel call to take up the cross and follow Christ. This she did joyfully as we are all called to do likewise in the same positive spirit. Finally, Metropolitan William commented on Sister s love of travel; she has now made that final journey into the Kingdom of God where all of her family members were waiting to welcome her and where she will continue to pray for us. In blessed repose, grant, O Lord, eternal rest to your departed servant, Sister Celestine, and remember her forever. September - October,

13 Denver Cantor Retires After 37 Years Of Service Cantor John Chabin announced his retirement at Holy Protection of the Mother of God Byzantine Catholic parish in Denver on his 79th birthday after almost four decades of service. Cantor John was presented with a beautiful hand painted Icon of Our Lady by his wife Dorothy and children. His tenure as Cantor covered 37 years, 10 Pastors, 16 Assistant Cantors and almost 4,000 services. His children and grandchildren attended a retirement ceremony in his honor. Cantor John retired from the Social Security Administration as Director of Disability Operations for the Rocky Mountain Region ( Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming). Our pastor, Father Michael O Loughlin joined with the parishioners in expressing their appreciation for his many years of dedicated service and leadership. Refreshments were served at a reception in his honor after the Divine Liturgy. Theresa Fedorco assumed the duties as Head Cantor. Gratitude from the Queen of Heaven Monastery Your Excellency: I see in the 2012 annual report from the National Religious Retirement Office that the Eparchy of Phoenix made a generous contribution for religious. These funds will surely be used well for the needs of the religious in the United States. Please convey our thanks and the thanks of all the religious to the generous people of your Eparchy for the contributions. In turn be assured of our prayers for your needs. Sister Agnes Knapik, OSB Administrator Father Michael O Loughlin, is standing with Cantor John Chabin and wife Dorothy, along with the many children and grandchildren. EDITOR S NOTE: The two cartoons on the right are printed to help us remember our friend Tad Kasper. who fell asleep in the Lord a few months ago after a lengthy illness. While he lived in one of the apartments at St. Stephen Cathedral he gave of himself so much that the religious and clergy always knew they could rely on him to help take someone to the airport. He would run errands and do odd jobs to help support our community. In blessed repose, grant, O Lord, eternal rest to your departed servant, Tad, and remember him forever. September - October,

14 MCI Cantor Workshop Held in Phoenix Submitted by Brian Kerzetski August s cantor workshop was a success beyond imagination and very much appreciated. It was held on a Saturday in August at St. Stephen Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Phoenix, AZ, where Father Stephen Washko is the rector. This was our first opportunity to have an instructor from the Metropolitan Cantor Institute visit the West. Jeff Mierzejewski gave us tremendous insight into what it means to be a cantor and how to effectively guide the congregation. It also reinforced the cantor s importance in the parish as well as how to serve with humility. Cantors from eight Southwest parishes participated, with the hope of a future one in the Pacific Northwest. I look forward to future workshops. Jeff answers one of a myriad of questions from the enthusiatic cantors. Cantors from other churches intermingled with each other. Are you ready for lunch? Cantors learn there s more to cantoring than just singing All is in readiness for the cantors. Welcome Wow, I never considered that. Bishop Gerald and all of the clergy and people of the Eparchy of Phoenix welcomes Subdeacon Artur Bubnevych, a subdeacon of the Eparchy of Mukachevo, Ukraine. Bishop Milan Sasik has released Subdeacon Artur for service in our American Western Eparchy. 14 Glory to Jesus Christ

15 Cathedral Parishioner Arranges a Byzantine Liturgy at Franciscan University of Steubenville Steubenville, OH On November 29th of last year students at the Franciscan University of Steubenville (FUS) gathered into Christ the King Chapel for the 4:45 PM Liturgy celebrated by Rev. Will Rupp, a priest of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, and by Rev. Richard Plishka, a priest of the Eparchy of Parma, assisted by Deacon Tim Corbett, a Deacon of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh. Arrangements for this Byzantine Rite Liturgy were made by Kristina Danovich, a nursing student at the university and a parishioner of St. Stephen s Byzantine Catholic Cathedral of Phoenix, Arizona and the daughter of Deacon James Danovich, a Deacon at the Phoenix Cathedral. When Kristina was a freshman at FUS, there had been a regular Byzantine Rite Liturgy on campus. However, it had fallen out of practice by the time Kristina returned from her semester studying at the International Theological Institute in Austria. Those who had originally organized the Liturgy had all graduated. So, in the Fall of 2012, she attempted to bring the Byzantine Liturgy back to the campus of FUS. With the help of Nate Kline, a student in the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh s Diaconal Formation Program; Mike McCann of St. Mary s Byzantine Catholic Church in Weirton, W.Va; and Luke Iyengar, a FUS student from Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church in McKees Rocks, PA, Kristina spearheaded the effort to organize and host the Divine Liturgy at FUS. The Liturgy was such a success that a group of students who were interested in the Byzantine Rite recently formed an organization called The Society of Blessed Theodore Romzha. It was named after the 20th century Byzantine Rite Bishop of Mukachevo, Ukraine. Bishop Romzha was martyred by the Communists and was beatified by Blessed Pope John Paul II. The Society was officially recognized by the Franciscan University on January 15th The Byzantine Liturgy continues to be celebrated at the university on a regular basis.
