1 Light of the West Holy Protection of Mary Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix Pastoral Center 8105 N. 16 th Street Phoenix, AZ Phone: (602) Fax: (602) Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever! Vol. XXIII, No. 5 September - October, 2015 Diaconate Ordination Held in Seattle, WA The second diaconate ordination within a year took place at St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church in Seattle, WA on September 27th. His Grace, Bishop Gerald Dino traveled up from Phoenix to ordain Deacon Benjamin Crow in his home parish of over 22 years. Deacon Benjamin had been previously ordained a subdeacon in He recently graduated from the Byzantine Catholic Seminary of SS. Cyril and Methodius in 2013 with a Masters of Divinity. Last year he married Jennifer Mandelas also of the Seattle parish and earlier this year both Deacon Benjamin and Jennifer welcomed baby Sophia Crow into their family. Recalling the experience of his ordination, Deacon Benjamin expressed: Having been through a couple of ordinations to minor orders in prayerfulness and sincerity, I thought I knew what to expect. However, this ordination was the first in my home parish. Being surrounded by so many in my parish family, by friends and by clergy from out of town that have supported me for many years made this ordination filled with many rich blessings. The laying on of hands of the bishop, the singing of Axios and receiving the Eucharist for the first time as a deacon were powerful and moving parts of the liturgy. I am extremely grateful for the hard work put in by family, friends and parishioners to make the event possible. It is a great joy to be able to serve at St. John Chrysostom parish as a deacon proclaiming the word and assisting the priest, but please continue to pray for me as I take on this new ministerial role. 2 A Calling of Love: The World Meeting of Families 2015 Submitted by Superior Court Judge of Maricopa County Joseph Mikitish In the summer of 2014, when my wife first told me that she felt called to participate in the Catholic World Meeting of Families this year, I thought she was joking. The Meeting has been held in different countries every three years since its inception by St. John Paul II in 1994, and 2015 was the first time it would be held in the United States. The meeting is similar to World Youth Day in that in invites Catholics from around the world to join in prayer, catechesis and fellowship. Did Jennifer really think we would take our 3 children, who would be ages five, three and one at the time of the conference, across the country to face crowds of tens of thousands of people to go to an event not aimed at young kids? Would that be fair to them? Would any sanity that remains in our lives be lost forever? As I read more about the focus of the conference, speakers, and participation by our Holy Father at this incredible gathering of Catholics, I realized she wasn't joking at all. I eventually came to understand Jennifer's yearning to better understand the challenges we face as families in the world, and the promise held out by our faith to lead a very different life. So we started the year-long adventure of planning for our great family pilgrimage, and in September, with three children, two aunts, and the two of us we set off for Philadelphia! This year's theme, Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive set forth our call to a life of connection, purpose, and fulfillment amidst the world's experience of families with ever greater levels of disunity, strife, and aimlessness. We were blessed to hear some incredible presentations. Well-known author and speaker (and now Bishop ) Robert Barron pointed us to the saints as our examples of how to help our families to become the image of God sharing in his Divine Nature. Jennifer was touched by a talk on Edith Stein who encouraged each woman to reflect on her Spiritual Motherhood, and to use the gifts God has given for the good of all she encounters. I appreciated the presentations by well-known evangelical author Rick Warren and Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston as they spoke on taking the life Christ, through our family, out into the world. And we will long remember the incredible seas of the faithful laity at the papal mass. And yes, the kids had a good time too! We encourage you to let the speakers inspire you, by taking a moment to view some of the presentations for yourself. You can find them either through the official website, or through YouTube. And who knows, in three short years, perhaps you can set out on a family adventure of your own to Ireland! Approximately 300 pilgrims gathered for the Vesper/Liturgy on Friday evening and for the Hierarchical Liturgy celebrated by Bishop Gerald Dino on Saturday morning. Concelebrating with Bishop Gerald were Father Vasyl Mutka, Director of the Shrine: Rt. Rev. Joseph Stanichar of Weston, OR: Father Lawrence Gosselin of Olympia, WA; Father James Lane of San Francisco, CA; Father Abraham Miller of Seattle, WA; Father William O Brien of Spokane, WA. Father Michael Mandelas of Seattle, WA acted as the Master of Ceremonies for the Bishop. In 1997, Bishop George Kuzma, knowing the people s devotion to the Mother of God in the Pacific Northwestern part of the Eparchy, announced his intention to have a shrine built on the property of St. George Church in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help so that the people would have a place for pilgrimages. A magnificent mosaic Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was purchased from the Mosaic Studios of Vatican City through the efforts of the Rt. Rev. 7 Parishioner in Albuquerque, NM Pays it Forward Tessa Mentus of KOB TV Channel 4 surprised Dorothy Curl on August 5 at the Friars of the Renewal Soup Kitchen to present her $400 in the channel s Pay It Forward series in recognition of her volunteer work. The $400 can be used for any purpose by the recipient, and the clip is shown on local television every Thursday. A native of Kentucky, Dorothy and her late husband Marvin married in 1948 and lived in Visalia, CA. Marvin worked for the FAA and Visalia is where they raised their son John, along with a series of very active wire-haired terriers. Perhaps Dorothy gets her energy from having to work with those dogs! In 1987 Dorothy and Marvin moved to Albuquerque to be near their son John, who worked for the Public Regulatory Commission in Santa Fe, and his family, because of a unique medical crisis: Marvin, who had survived fighting in the Pacific during World War II, had a rare and dangerous genetic liver disease: Alpha 1 Deficiency. He became an experimental liver transplant, with Dorothy at his side, as they traveled to San Francisco for three months of intensive medical treatment. The surgeons told the Curls that they should join a support group because you ll need it and they not only did that, but actively helped the families of transplant patients at hospitals while engaging in other charitable work. Marvin lived an astounding twenty-two years and six months with that new liver, dying a holy death in 2014 with his wife, son, and two priests at his bedside. But that didn t stop Dorothy! Sunday: worshipping at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Byzantine Catholic Church, serving as a greeter and counter; Monday: collect baked goods and flowers from Albertson s for Kaseman Hospital Hospice, where she volunteers to help families; Tuesday: clean at the church; Wednesday: serve meals and befriend the homeless at the Friars of the Renewal Kitchen (with pastor Fr. Artur Bubnevych and up to 10 other parishioners); Thursday: deliver Meals On Wheels to shut-ins; Friday: pick up flowers for the church and stay to help out. In addition to her son John, she enjoys life with two married grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. Frankly, she beats out people half her age in terms of energy, although it seems nobody knows what her age is. In true Dorothy style, she paid out the $400 to two charities Father Artur with Dorothy and three friends. Everybody wants to laugh and work together with Dorothy. 8 Uniontown, PA Pilgrimage Held Over Labor Day editor s note: This year s article is being replaced by Sr. Ruth s beautifully written thank you note to all. If ever you have a chance to attend this beautiful pilgrimage in southwestern Pennsylvania, please do so as the spiritual rewards outweigh the travel time. Sister Ruth Plante, OSBM, greeting the people near the end of the Liturgy. GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST! Dear Friends, Every Pilgrimage in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help brings with it a treasury of blessings, touching stories, and little miracles. This year s 81st Pilgrimage has been no different. Throughout the weekend we were moved by the number of faithful pilgrims who made the journey to be here from near and far. Some of our older pilgrims proudly told us of the number of times they have made the journey 50 years, 60 years, 70 years and more! Multigenerational and younger families came with babies, toddlers, children and teens. Almost 400 children participated in the Children s Procession on Sunday afternoon. The candlelight procession was so inspiring with a ribbon of light winding around the pathways. We are so grateful to all of you, our dear pilgrims, for being here, for sharing your priceless stories with us, and for helping us to remember that for all the tragedy and evil that is so often broadcast, there are also countless faith-filled and generous people who strive to say yes to God s plan for them each and every day. May Our Lady of Perpetual Help and her Divine Son reward you with the graces and spiritual gifts you need as you continue your faith journey throughout the coming year. Be assured that our prayers always accompany you. With our gratitude and prayers, Sister Ruth Plante, OSBM and the Sisters of St. Basil As promised, the Sisters are prayering for the pilgrims during one of the services. 10 You Need to Learn to Fly On Your Own Wings submitted by Samantha Baron On June 28, 2015, St. Anne s Byzantine Catholic Church saw the graduation of David Aguirre and Samantha Baron. I ve started this paper with the above quote because I heard it from Fr. Milan at the beginning of the graduation ceremony and found it interesting. As a young adult, it s important to be able to go out in the world in the safe notion that you can effectively take responsibility for your own life, thus learning to fly on your own wings. Of course, always in line with the will of God to the best of one s abilities. The ceremony was pretty simple: It was held outside of St. Anne s on a warm and windy day. The graduates walked down the stairs at the side of the parish and took their seats; Fr. Milan started the whole thing off with prayer. Then came the graduates and parents speeches. Father closed the ceremony and everyone walked inside the Parish Hall for food and fellowship. Graduation is the graduate s stool to stand on and grip the first handle of the monkey bars, so to speak. We re finding our goals and taking the first step toward reaching them. With so many options open it can be overwhelming to choose what we re going to do for the rest of our lives. It can also be an adventure. For those familiar with Tolkien s work, Bilbo Baggins once said It s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don t keep your feet, there s no knowing where you might be swept off to. To all future graduates: You need to learn to fly on your own wings. Take that first step and reach for your goals; jump in a puddle; try, try, and try again. Keep your feet and always pray. Let the adventure begin! God bless! Samanth & David from St Anne Byzantine Catholic Church receive a special blessing from Fr. Milan 10 Glory to Jesus Christ

12 News From the Pews Parishioners of Holy Angels Byzantine Catholic Church in San Diego showed the fruitful and floral sides of their attendance at the feastdays of the Transfiguration and Dormition in August. How precious the children are. Fr Brian Escobedo is the pastor of Holy Angels Byzantine Catholic Church. Newly Ordained Melkite Priest Worked in St. Anne s At the Divine Liturgy on Sunday 30 August in Holy Transfiguration Melkite Catholic Church, McLean, Virginia, His Grace Bishop Nicholas Samra imposed hands on Deacon Sebastian Carnazzo and invoked the Holy Spirit upon him to ordain him a priest in the Melkite Church for service at the altars of the Eparchy of Newton. Dr William Carnazzo, the proud father of the new priest, and his wife, Araceli, joined a host of relatives and friends from near and far in the congregation, including members of the parish of the Holy Prophet Elias in San Jose, CA, who traveled cross - country for the occasion. The newly ordained priest is assigned to Holy Prophet Elias Melkite Greek-Catholic Church in San Jose. Fr Sebastian Carnazzo, prior to being ordained to the priesthood, was assigned a Deacon at St. Anne Byzantine Catholic Church in San Luis Obispo, where Fr. Milan Kasperek is pastor. 13 Autobiography of Fr. Vasyl Mutka My name is Fr. Vasyl Mutka. I have been a Byzantine Catholic priest for 7 years. I was born in Drogobych, Ukraine. According to my family talks, on the day I was born and was placed on my mother s chest, my mother looked up to God and asked for me the blessing to become a priest. From a very young age I wanted to be a priest. At the age of 15, I wanted to go to a monastery, but the Prefect at the monastery said I was too young. So I then went to a vocational school to study electro mechanics. At the age of 19 I entered the seminary. After the seminary I was studying in University of Kardynala Stefana Wyshynskogo, Poland, and earned a Master s Degree in the Science of Family and Licentiatus in Theologia Dogmatica. I was ordained a priest on July 15, 2008 by Bishop Michael Koltun of Sokal-Zhovkva Eparchy. My first assignment was as a pastor of the Holy Spirit Byzantine Church in Potelych, Ukraine. It is the oldest wooden church in Ukraine, founded in The Church was closed during Communist time and in 2008 I was the first priest who opened the church to the people. Also I, with two other priests, started to build Marian Spiritual Center in Zahlyna, Ukraine. In 2009 I emigrated to USA with my wife Oresta and son Markiyan. My wife, Oresta, graduated from Medical University named after M.Pirogov, Vinnitsa, Ukraine. She is a pharmacist. My son, Markiyan is enrolled at Holy Family School, Lacey, WA, in the second grade. September - October 2015 From 2009 until the middle of 2014 I lived in NYC, where I assisted at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church in Manhattan, NY. On December 30th, 2014 I had been appointed as Administrator of St. George Byzantine Catholic Church in Olympia, WA and as the director of the Eparchial Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which is located on the property of St. George Parish by Bishop Gerald N. Dino.God has blessed me with the opportunities to serve at this beautiful parish on Pacific Northwest! 13

14 OLPH Parish in Albuquerque, NM Sponsors Exhibit at the New Mexico State Fair Getting ready to start the day at the fair. Always helping the people to find the perfect icon. The Our Lady of Perpetual Help booth was once again a feature attraction in the Manual Lujan Exhibit Building at the New Mexico State Fair (Expo New Mexico 2015), and this year was one of the best ever in terms of popularity with fair-goers. Our parishioners stepped up to the plate to help make the booth a success for the duration of the fair, spanning a total of 11 days and some 375 volunteer hours! Members of the local University of New Mexico Catholic student group Catholic Apologetics Fellowship and Evangelization (or C.A.F.É.) also helped in manning the booth. On display were icons from Russia, wall crosses, medals of saints, prayer cards, bracelets, rosaries, books, and a host of other items from our gift shop. The centerpiece of the exhibit was Our Lady Helper of Mothers icon (shown in the pictures below) that has been the inspiration for numerous miracles related to conception and difficult pregnancies, and it sparked many conversations. Also at the booth this year, Franciscan brothers and other priests were available for confessions. Another big hit was the demonstrations of Pysanky egg decorating, which were conducted by one of our parishioners. This booth provides us with the opportunity to evangelize as well as sell items from our Gift Shop. Engaging in conversations with passers-by allows us to explain the iconography unique to the Byzantine Catholic Church. This exhibit has been and continues to be a wonderful outreach, showcasing our Eastern brand of the Catholic Faith. And the State Fair venue provides unparalleled exposure of our church to many people from all walks of life; people of all faiths, or no faith. Showing off the wooden pysanky to a customer. 18 With the recent placement of its new building, Saint Gabriel s preschool, which will be known as Saint Gabriel s Littlest Angels Catholic Preschool, is being made ready for its first students. Parish owned and operated it will be the only facility of its kind in the Eparchy. The 60 by 60 structure is of modular design and will provide 3,600 square feet of indoor space for the program. It was delivered over the past month in five sections which have since been assembled to form one building. Exterior colors are a cheerful yellow with marine blue trim which will provide a welcoming environment to the anticipated 50 to 60 three and four year olds the preschool will serve. The exterior area in front of the building will feature a large, shaded play area approximately 40 by 80. The entire facility will be enclosed by a full perimeter fence to assure security and an overall safe environment. Reverend Marcus Gomori (pictured above), pastor of Saint Gabriel Byzantine Catholic Church, has long looked forward to this project and meeting the goals he has set for it. These include offering parents a strong Catholic educational foundation for their children, a greater interface with Saint Gabriel Catholic Elementary School, which is located adjacent to the parish, and being able to offer families greater exposure to Eastern Catholic spirituality and traditions along with those of the West, with which many are already familiar. In this sense he envisions educational and spiritual opportunities for all members of a student s family through parish life and all that it has to offer. For the children themselves, the Preschool curriculum will consist of age-appropriate Core Knowledge modules, Saint Gabriel s Preschool Taking Shape in Las Vegas submitted by Msgr. Kevin McAuliffe such as math, science, music, social studies, and religion, which are also being taught in the elementary school. This will insure that students moving into kindergarten from the preschool program will be well prepared for the next grade s work whether they attend Saint Gabriel or any other elementary school. In its current development, and in the implementation of the overall program, from concept, to licensing, staffing, curriculum, and mission, Saint Gabriel s has been blessed with the presence and experience of Sister Melita Penchalk, OSBM. After accepting Father Gomori s invitation to serve at Saint Gabriel s, specifically in the preschool project, Sister arrived at the parish last year and brought with her a rich background in education at all levels with which she has guided the work that has been done thus far. She serves in the official capacity of Director of the Preschool and clearly demonstrates a personal investment in its development and a strong commitment to achieving its goals. Her presence, and the support of the Sisters of Saint Basil the Great, expressed in Sister Melita s key role and work at Saint Gabriel s, particularly in her capacity as the preschool s Director, strengthen greatly the Catholic character of the teaching and activities which will be offered to the students. The completed facility is expected to cost approximately $450, This includes the building, all amenities, and furnishings. Several successful fund raising events along with some generous donors have so far contributed to making the necessary funds available. A parish Preschool Board has been in place for most of the past year and meets regularly to oversee the project, plan fund raising and other events, and advise on issues which inevitably arise in the course of planning 18 Glory to Jesus Christ

19 and construction. The Board combines the vision, experience, and expertise of Father Gomori, Sister Melita, Ms. Mary Kay Bellinger, who is the principal of Saint Gabriel Catholic School, and several other staff and parish members whose individual and collective perspective have been so important in the successful execution of this project. The facility will operate year round, Monday through Friday with the exception of holidays, with daily hours of 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. The regular preschool curriculum will be offered between 8 am and 3 pm during the regular school year. Summer camps, including a Kindergarten Prep Camp, will fill the summer weeks. An early care program will be offered between 6:30 am and 8 am for early drop-offs with a similar after school program available between 3 pm and 6:30 pm. The early and late programs will be available to children of all ages. Depending on their choice of the regular daily program and any before or after school needs tuition will range between $165 and $220 per student per week throughout the year. The projected opening date, by which time it is hoped that all permitting and licensing inspections will be complete, is January 4, The parish looks forward to celebrating the event with a formal dedication ceremony and, with God s blessing, many years of offering all of Saint Gabriel s Littlest Angels the best Catholic preschool experience possible!
