Glory Forever! Vol. XXII, No. 5 September - October, 2014 Basilian Sisters Celebrate 80th Anniversary of Pilgrimage Having fond memories of my many experiences at Mount St. Macrina throughout my childhood and beyond, we decided to return to Uniontown, PA this year to pray, reconnect with family, friends, clergy and the sisters who annually dedicate themselves to our church in hosting this weekend of prayer and fellowship. For those unaware, the pilgrimage started when Pope Pius XI presented an icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to the Sisters of St. Basil with the charge of honoring her in a special way. For the 80th time, over Labor Day weekend, thousands of pilgrims came from all over the country and even the whole world to participate this year where the theme focused on Theotokos, Fountain of Mercy. From the opening Compline on Friday night through the candlelight procession on Sunday night, the grounds were filled with all of the Liturgical Services, prayer, reflection, reconciliation and worship. The food was pretty good too and the pilgrimage is never complete without the signature medovniky cookies. The Mount is particularly special to me in that many of my family are buried in the cemetery there, so while we participated in the pilgrimage s Parastas, our family took time to visit each of our departed loved ones as well, as we remembered God s promise of eternal life for us all. If you ve never been, I strongly encourage everyone reading this to plan to attend at least one pilgrimage in Uniontown, PA. You will be spiritually renewed and you will be able to experience God s love through the many members of our Byzantine Catholic Faithful who come to this holy ground. by Deacon James Danovich Tommy Duch, former mayor of Garfield NJ, chats with Bishop Gerald after one of the services. 4 Bishop Gerald Ordains Deacon Artur Bubnevych To The Presbyterate Artur Bubnevych was born June 22nd,1975 in a little town called Perechin of the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. He graduated from Uzhgorod Greek Catholic Seminary of the Blessed Theodore Romzha in He received minor orders, including the subdiaconate in He earned an advanced theological degree from the International Theological Institute in Gaming, Austria in He worked as a project secretary at the Chancery of the Eparchy of Mukachevo from 2006 to He also taught English at the Greek Catholic Seminary in Uzhorod.. In September 2013 at the invitation of our Bishop Gerald he came to our Eparchy of Phoenix with the blessing of Bishop Milan of Mukachevo to minister in our Eparchy and to serve in a pastoral capacity as assigned by the Bishop. He was ordained a deacon on March 9th 2014 at St. Stephen Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Phoenix. Deacon Artur Bubnevych was ordained to the Holy Order of the Presbyterate by His Grace Bishop Gerald N. Dino, Bishop of the Holy Protection of Mary Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix on Sunday of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, September Subdeacon Sebastian pours water on the Bishop s hands. 14, 2014 at Saint Stephen Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Phoenix. When asked how Father Arthur felt on being elevated, he responded: I approached with a fear of God and with faith. I received it as the greatest and most precious gift and treasure being granted to the clay that I am. Of course I am immensely grateful to God for all He has given to me, to His Grace Bishop Gerald my ordaining bishop, to my beloved parents and family in Ukraine, friends, benefactors, to my parish family in my home parish in Perechin, Ukraine, my new parish family at St. Stephen in Phoenix as well as in San Diego, and all the people who assisted me on my journey to the Priesthood. I could not express in words the magnitude of my feelings and emotions as I tried to do that during the reception following the Ordination the tears flooded my eyes and they were the sure sign of my human inability to express the divine reality and significance of the event that took place and the amazing grace that entered into my life. From now on I passed the threshold to a completely new life and it s not about me it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. (Gal. 2:20) Divine Grace, which always heals what is infirm and supplies what is lacking, ordains the pious Deacon Artur to be a Presbyter... 6 Bishop Gerald Ordains Subdeacon Michael Melnick To The Diaconate Subdeacon Michael John Melnick was ordained to the Holy Order of the Diaconate by His Grace, Bishop Gerald N. Dino, Bishop of Holy Protection of Mary Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix. The ordination took place on Sunday, September 21, 2014, the Sunday After the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, during a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at St. Thomas the Apostle Byzantine Catholic Church in Gilbert, Arizona. Deacon Michael reflects on his ordination: As I approached Bishop Gerald, prostrating three times on my journey, calm swept over me. This is the moment for which I have been preparing most of my life. This is my Yes to God s call in service to his Church. But, as I greeted the Bishop by kissing his hand, epignation, and shoulder, I began to better understand the reality of the day and of the phrase, Approach with the fear of God and with faith. My mind was swimming as I was being led around the altar, kissing the corners of the table of sacrifice, the Holy Table. I was remembering all of my catechesis regarding the touching of the Holy Table who is permitted to touch the Holy Table and in what function. My scripture classes echoed in my mind about the book of Exodus and how Moses was instructed to build the sanctuary where God would dwell among Israel. I thought, I am with God, present within the Tabernacle and presented through the bloodless sacrifice offered today, here on this Holy Table, here in the Altar, the Holy of Holies, and I am about to be forever changed, I am about to be given the promotion of Service to God s Faithful, ordination to the Diaconate. As the weight of Bishop Gerald s hand rested on my head and the prayer of promotion was said, I wept silently in my humility and joy. I was then responsible, as was the first martyr Stephen, to fulfill the office of deacon, having been written in the Holy Gospel: If anyone wishes to be first among you, let him be your servant. (Matthew 20:27) There was an indescribable emotion of elation as Bishop Gerald proclaimed in a loud voice, Axios! As the clergy, and then the faithful, echoed the Bishop s proclamation, I was vested as is fitting a Deacon. Then, my mind wanted to hold to the thought, my journey is complete, but my heart knew better that the journey was just beginning. For it is through service to God s people that my journey must continue. As I left the Altar as a deacon to intone my first litany petition, I smiled with joy as I was living the scriptures, To You, O Lord, I cry hear the voice of my supplication when I pray to You and when I lift up my hands toward your Holy Temple. (Psalm 27: 1-2) The three parishioners present the bread, salt and keys to the church to Bishop Gerald for his blessing. Subdeacon as he is being presented to the Bishop Divine Grace, which always heals what is infirm and supplies what is lacking, ordains the pious Subdeacon Michael to be a Deacon... 6 Glory to Jesus Christ

8 St. Melany in Tucson, AZ Celebrates 40th Anniversary This Fall Saint Melany Byzantine Catholic Church in Tucson Arizona commemorated 40 years of Light, Life and Love in the Holy Trinity. What began in 1974 as a outreach from Saint Stephen s Cathedral in Phoenix to the Tucson metropolitan area, with a Divine Liturgy being offered at the historic Indian Mission of San Xavier del Bac, quickly evolved into a fully functioning parish community. On Saturday, evening September 27 the community gathered for Solemn Vespers followed by a simple but elegant reception which included testimonies and videos of the history of people, priests and projects that made up the parish s sojourn over the past 40 years. Then on Sunday a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was celebrated followed by a blessing of the new playground and a good ole BBQ and potluck. Present for the two day celebration were: Bishop Dino, Metropolitan William and Bishop Kicanas of the Roman Diocese of Tucson; Deacons Michael John Melnick, James Danovich and Michael Sullivan; and Fathers Wes Izer, Stephen Washko, and David Petras and the present pastor of Saint Melany, Father Robert Rankin. Throughout the whole event entitled: Our proud past; our promising future the parishioners of Saint Melany parish celebrated with joy and panache all that God has done, is doing and will do, in and through God s faithful people. Gratitude and optimism were the prevailing attitudes of the weekend, as everywhere the parishioners, young and old and in between manifested confidence in God and pride in their Byzantine Catholic Faith. 10 Bishop Gerald Consecrates San Luis Obispo, CA Church Bishop Gerald saying the prayers prior to washing the altar On Sunday, October 5th, the parishioners of St. Anne Byzantine Catholic Church in San Luis Obispo, California celebrated an historical event in the parish: the Consecration of the Church which was rebuilt in Over the years the typical elements of the Byzantine Church were installed: an iconostas with its various icons, and icons in the newly constructed dome. According to the Byzantine tradition, the Church can be consecrated after the iconostas is finished. The iconastas was completed in September. On the first Sunday in October, after the Feast of Protection of the Holy Mother of God, His Grace Bishop Gerald N. Dino consecrated the church, blessed the iconastas and its icons and performed the rite of purification of the altar. After the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy took place, there was a luncheon in the parish hall for all those in attendance. At the end, Fr. Milan Kasperek, pastor of the parish, gave one big thank you to His Grace Bishop Gerald N. Dino, to all priests who were by the altar and all the people who helped in any way preparing for this wonderful celebration. God grant you many happy and blessed years. 14 American Byzantine Catholic Beatified On Saturday, October 4th, an American Byzantine Catholic was beatified in the Cathedral-Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, N.J. The ceremony was performed by Cardinal Angelo Amato, SDB, the Prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Sister Miriam Demjanovich, a Sister of Charity, who was born to Slovak immigrants in 1901, was baptized and chrismated in St. John s Byzantine Catholic Church in Bayonne, N.J. As she was growing up, Sister Miriam proved to be a brilliant student. She graduated from the Bayonne High School as the Salutatorian of her class at the age On Sunday, October 19th, Pope Francis, as the highlight of the Synod of Bishops on the Family, beatified Pope Paul VI, who was the Pope who issued the famous Encyclical Humanae Vitae, which condemned the use of artificial measures to prevent births. The encyclical created much controversy as many in the Church rejected it. However, the years passed and the sexual revolution, brought on by the widespread use of contraceptives, proved to be a nightmare for many persons and families. Many who were previously critical of the document came to see the truthfulness of its assertions and have come to support it. They saw that the sexual revolution had begotten widespread marital breakups, epidemics of sexually transmitted diseases, which were previously of 16. She went on to the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, N.J., where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor s Degree in Literature. After college she taught Latin and English at the Academy of St. Aloysius in Jersey City, N.J. Having been taught by the Sisters of Charity at the College of St. Elizabeth, she decided to enter that Order of Sisters even though it was a Latin Rite Order, but she never changed her Byzantine Rite. Having entered the convent two years earlier, she died at the age of 26 just days after making her final vows as a professed sister. Her beatification was noteworthy because it was the first ever beatification to take place Sister Miriam Theresa Demjanovich. (photo courtesy of Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth.) Pope Paul VI Beatified In Rome Father Gerald Dino receives a copy of the Encyclical Humane Vitae. from Pope Paul VI. unknown, and many deaths, all of which came to be seen as attributable to the promiscuity permitted by the new contraceptives. Pope Paul VI was also significant to the history of our Byzantine Catholic Church in the United States because he established the Eparchies of Passaic (1963) and Parma (1969) and our Metropolitan Church sui iuris of Pittsburgh (1969). He is pictured here being greeted by Father Gerald N. Dino, who was a student at the Oriental Institute in Rome, Italy at the time (1972), and who now is the Bishop of the Holy Protection of Mary Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix. 15 News From the Byzantine Catholic Seminary Submitted by David Dix Since its dedication on May 17, 1953, the library at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary of Ss. Cyril and Methodius has been home to an exceptional collection of unique texts which documents the history, theology and liturgy of our Byzantine Catholic Church. This collection includes more than 22,000 volumes, 30% of which we believe are to be found nowhere else in North America. The library s rare book room houses 7,000 of these valuable, non-circulating documents. We also have personal history donations, manuscripts, music and various artifacts which proudly reflect the intellectual and spiritual heritage of our faith. These historically significant volumes are both fragile and vulnerable. Unfortunately, the library is currently not equipped to properly protect these items, and very few preservation practices are in effect. The Seminary and its Board of Directors have recognized that the library is in very real danger of losing irreplaceable historical texts if action is not taken quickly. The Seminary s Board of Directors also have identified a goal of making the library s material more accessible to a wider audience as part of the Seminary s increasing focus on distance courses and online learning. In addition to the associated technologies necessary, the ultimate goal is to preserve the library s rare material in a stable, digital format, thereby rendering them accessible to scholars from around the world. The Seminary has begun an appeal to enable us to purchase and install badlyneeded equipment in the Seminary s library in order to preserve our collection. Once this is done, our plan is to acquire the associated technologies to provide access to this collection to library friends around the world. 16 Eparchy Clergy Have Their Annual Retreat It is said, one shouldn t wait till the last minute to do things. The rule was broken recently, but Father Daniel Forsythe, the retreat master, accepted a last minute challenge to share the theme for the clergy retreat. We will be looking carefully at a number of stories from the Old Testament, including the stories of Noah and the flood, Abraham and Isaac, Ruth and Others. In particular, we will be examining these passages with insight from the Rabbinic tradition. This will hopefully provide an opportunity to experience Christ in a fresh way, seeing Him in the Old Testament in ways that Christians are not used to seeing him. After the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to two of his disciples on the Road to Emmaus. They didn t recognize him, but he spoke to them concerning Himself and opened to them the Scriptures. I hope that our experience of this retreat will be similar- to walk alongside these ancient old testament stories and be surprised to find our hearts burning within us as, hidden, Christ reveals himself in these stories. The retreat took place at the Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree, AZ from October Father Forsythe is the pastor of St Basil s Byzantine Catholic Church in Irving, TX. Fr. Mykhaylo Sidun and Deacon Steve Vrabel meet with Bishop Gerald, on the grounds of the retreat house. Bishop Gerald annoints the hands of Fr.
