4 Mosaic of Catholic Faith PRESENTERS Mr. Steve Greene Steve Greene is the Director of English Programs for Kino Catechetical Institute at the Diocese of Phoenix. He is also the co-host, with his wife, Becky, of The Catholic Conversation radio program, which airs weekly in Phoenix on Immaculate Heart Radio, AM Steve has taught in the Diocese of Phoenix in a variety of capacities since moving to Arizona from his native Wisconsin in He has taught the Catholic faith for more than 15 years as a youth minister; high school theology teacher; professor of philosophy, theology and catechetics; and in stand-alone presentations on a wide variety of topics relevant to Catholic thought and life. Steve has also been featured as a guest on The Bishop s Hour radio program, Catholics Matter television program, and in The Catholic Sun newspaper. He and his wife have four children and one little intercessor in heaven. Steve and his family are members of St. Timothy Catholic Parish in Mesa, Arizona. Very Reverend David Petras The Very Reverend David Petras was born in Ohio in He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duquesne University, a licentiate of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, and a Doctorate in Eastern Church Studies from the Pontifical Oriental Institute. Ordained to the priesthood in 1967, Fr. David completed his doctoral studies in 1970, whereupon he served as Assistant Chancellor for the Eparchy of Parma and subsequently held pastoral positions in Detroit, Akron and Cleveland. He was ordained an Archpriest in 2004 at St. John s Cathedral, Eparchy of Parma by the Most Reverend John Kudrick. Fr. David has held numerous academic positions including Director of Spiritual Formation and Professor of Liturgy at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary; Diocesan Director of Continuing Education of Priests, Chairman, Priestly Life Commission, and Director of Seminary Education and Priestly Formation for the Eparchy of Parma; and is currently a Field Instructor at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary. He has served on numerous commissions and councils at both national and local levels, notably the North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation, and is a prolific author of many scholarly works, including Light for Life, an adult catechesis sponsored by the Eastern Catholic Bishops of America. An accomplished presenter, Fr. David has spoken at many conferences and symposia and is recognized as an authority on Byzantine theology and history. 4

5 Discovering the Eastern Catholic Churches Right Reverend Wesley Izer The Right Reverend Wesley Izer, known to most as Father Wes, was born in California in He was a professed Salesian of Don Bosco for 43 years until he was enrolled as a priest in the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Don Bosco College, Newton, N.J., a Master of Divinity and a Master of Sacred Theology (Pontifical degree) from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, California. He was ordained a priest in For 15 years he taught in the Salesian high schools located in California. He also served as provincial archivist and animator for the Salesian family. Since the beginning of the Eparchy, Fr. Wes has served parishes in California, Arizona, Washington, and Alaska and has held numerous chancery positions including Protosyncellus (Vicar General). Currently Fr. Wes serves full time in the Phoenix Eparchial Chancery as the Syncellus (Episcopal Vicar) for Eparchial Administration, Eparchial Finance Officer, Chancellor, and also as an Eparchial Consultor and a member of the Eparchial Finance Council, Personnel Board, Building & Sacred Arts Commission and Pension Committee. In 1997, he was honored by the late Bishop George Kuzma, the second Bishop of Van Nuys, with the honorific title of Archimandrite (archabbot) for his dedicated service to the Eparchy. Reverend Robert Rossi, osc Fr. Robert Rossi, osc, a member of the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross (Crosiers), was born just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in He received his high school and college education from the Crosiers and after completing philosophy and theology studies, was ordained a Catholic priest in Fr. Rossi s career as a Crosier spans 50 years of Order leadership in the United States and abroad, including religious education and formation and missionary service in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Brazil. He is widely traveled and speaks French, Spanish and Portuguese. He has authored several books and a number of articles on the history and spirituality of the Crosier Order. Although a semi-retired member of the Crosier Community of Phoenix, Fr. Rossi offers personal spiritual direction, gives retreats and conferences, and serves as a fundraiser for the community. Currently, Fr. Rossi serves as the Interim Director of the Office of Consecrated Life for the Diocese of Phoenix and chairs the planning committee for the new Cross Corps Volunteers a Crosier lay group that will focus on providing domestic and international service. 5

7 ABOUT THE CROSIERS Discovering the Eastern Catholic Churches Founded in 1210 by Blessed Theodore de Celles, the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross the Crosier Fathers and Brothers are an ancient Roman Catholic order. Deriving from the French croisés, or those signed by the cross, the term Crosier embodies the Order s spirituality, which focuses on Christ s glorious, exalted cross. The Crosiers recognize that Christ s suffering, death and resurrection ensure hope and healing, even in the midst of struggle, and are dedicated to living together for God alone. For more than 800 years, the Crosiers have lived a life of community, prayer and ministry; today nearly 400 serve all over the world, including North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The Crosier Community of Phoenix serves in many ways, including Celebrating Mass and assisting many parishes throughout the Valley Providing the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Communion and offering spiritual counseling in Lower Buckeye, Durango, Towers and Fourth Avenue jails Offering accredited immigration services, including six-week citizenship classes conducted five times per year and pro bono legal services The Crosiers stand as witnesses of God s love and want to be good brothers and neighbors who especially serve the marginalized and those in greatest need. 7

8 Mosaic of Catholic Faith ABOUT THE CROSIER VILLAGE AT SOUTH MOUNTAIN To expand Crosier ministries and provide them to those most in need, plans are under way to build the Crosier Village at South Mountain at Baseline Road and 33rd Street in south Phoenix. In partnership with the Foundation for Senior Living, the Village is designed to expand services to seniors, local residents and area Catholics. Initial facilities will include the Village Community Center with flexible space for Masses, retreats, gatherings and meals; the Priory, where Crosiers will reside and work in communion with seniors and neighboring parishes; and Senior Housing Apartments for seniors with limited or no housing options. The Village will stand as a sacred place in the midst of the busyness and concerns of daily life.
