1 Vatican City - Each year on the feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the Holy Father imposes a special garment upon those hierarchs who were enthroned over the past 12 months as Archbishops. During the 2012 ceremony June 29, Pope Benedict XVI imposed the pallium upon archbishops from around the world. Byzantine Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop William C. Skurla, however, received not the pallium, but the omoforion, a traditional vestment unique to the Eastern Catholic bishops. The pallium, a thin woolen band marked with six black crosses, is the traditional symbol of a Catholic archbishop s authority as pastor of his flock and of unity with the Holy Father, the Vicar of Christ. Also decorated with crosses, but considerably wider and longer than the pallium, the omoforion (also omofor or omophor), which originally also was made of wool, is a band of decorated brocade cloth draped around the shoulders of Eastern Catholic (and Orthodox) hierarchs. Both the pallium and the omofor are worn in this manner to symbolize July - August 2012 Light of the West Holy Protection of Mary Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix (formerly known as the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Van Nuys) Pastoral Center 8105 N. 16 th Street Phoenix, AZ Phone: (602) Fax: (602) Glory to Jesus Christ! Vol. XX, No. 4 July - August, 2012 Metropolitan William Receives Omoforion in Vatican Ceremony Submitted by Darlene Fejka the iconic lost sheep carried upon the shoulders of Christ the Good Shepherd, and are symbolic of the archbishops authority as pastors and unity with the pope. The pallium and omofor are essentially meant to symbolize the same thing, explains Metropolitan William, who received the vestment at the hand of Pope Benedict during the early morning ceremony in Rome. As head of both the sui iuris Byzantine Catholic (Ruthenian) Metropolitan Church in America and the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, His Eminence joined 45 other archbishops from around the world, three of them from the U.S.: Archbishop Charles Joseph Chaput O.F.M. Cap. of Philadelphia, Archbishop William Edward Lori of Baltimore, and Archbishop Samuel Joseph Aquila of Denver. It was quite an experience, recalls Archbishop William, who received official word only the day before the ceremony that he would be receiving the omofor, and would thus make history. The solemn pageant, set within St. Peter s Basilica, was broadcast live from Rome via EWTN Global Catholic Network. 1

2 New Las Vegas School Makes Its Debut Las Vegas, NV Several parishioners of Saint Gabriel s Byzantine Catholic Church have joined together to form a private corporation, the purpose of which is to open a privately owned elementary school which will teach Catholic Doctrine based on an Eastern Catholic approach to Theology, Spirituality and Liturgy. The school opens in late August of this year with grades K through 3rd. The corporation recently leased a research office building, which is located adjacent to the parish property. The building was previously used as a research facility for scientists who were interested in working in the American Space Program. However, with the defunding of NASA by the Federal Government, the research center was closed. In order to equip the building to conform to the Nevada State requirements for classroom sizes for elementary schools, the inside of the building had to be completely gutted and rebuilt. The cost was $1.6 million. After the official opening of the school, construction will continue with additions to the present building for more classrooms, a gymnasium, an indoor cafeteria (an outdoor cafeteria has already been constructed), and a new church for the parishioners and the students to worship in. A home adjacent to the school property was also purchased to serve as a convent for the Sisters of St. Basil the Great, who will help staff the school. The school will be named Saint Gabriel Catholic School. It is hoped that it will draw many children from the community since that section of Las Vegas where the school is located has no Catholic Parochial Schools. The total acreage of the property of the Church, school and convent is seven acres. The property is about ten minutes away from the Las Vegas airport. Father Marcus Gomori is pastor of St. Gabriel s parish. 3 Deacon Stephen Reflects on His Trek to Ordination By Deacon Stephen Vrabel What can one say about a nearly seven year trek into a world never experienced before? The quest begins with the time spent to apply for admission into the program; the acceptance and the first summer at seminary; the meeting with men whom you had never met before, yet seemed as if you knew them all your life; the bonds formed by the same pursuit of a goal - very much like being part of a combat/military unit; the increasing interest of your parish in your studies and your new roll with them; the four years of work with the caring and learned staff at seminary; finally the final papers, review of your years of study and activities within the Church and then the wait to find out when you might be ordained, as there is no guarantee. The journey to ordination is exhausting for both the candidate and his spouse. But by God's will that day will come and in my case our God-loving Bishop Gerald came to Alaska with the man who first prompted me to apply to the deacon program, Father Wes Izer. This alone with all my parish and guest would have been overwhelming, but I had the added humbling experience that two of my class mates from Pittsburgh and their wives also came to join my family for this literally once in a life time experience. The generosity of the parish and our pastor Father James Barrand was beyond kindness, it was a shared joy that only true Christians can experience - the Love of our Lord touched us all. 4 Vatican Ad Limina Visit Made by Bishop Gerald May 19, 2012 Vatican City. Bishop Gerald N. Dino and Fr. Stephen G. Washko from our Eparchy of Holy Protection represented our eparchy during the Ad Limina Visit of Region 15 of the Eastern Catholic Bishops of America. Each bishop and one priest or seminarian from the eparchy had the privilege to meet the Holy Father in person. This concluded a week of visits to the tomb of St. Peter at St. Peter s Basilica, to the United States Embassy to the Vatican, various decasteries and offices of the Vatican many of which involve the general ecclesial life of the local eparchies with the Holy See. Each bishop got to see the directors and people who work on behalf of the eparchy. The visit also included an evening with the Sisters of Saint Basil the Great Generalite and the Ukrainian Sister Servants. 8 Alive in Christ Held in Prescott, AZ submitted by Alex Danovich This year, the Alive in Christ Ascetical Boot Camp was in Prescott, Arizona, at Emmanuel Pines Christian Camp. It was held from July Chief among the various activities that make up Alive in Christ are the prayer services, since the main purpose of the camp is to deepen our connection with God. I very much enjoyed my time there. We played games and had a nice competition between all of the teams. I especially enjoyed the Drench relay race. There we raced in a water-related obstacle course, where my team came out on top for fastest team! This year I was a Team Captain where I was able to help and encourage my team during the various competitions. All of the services were wonderful as well, even getting up for the all night prayer vigil. Another highlight was the campfire where each of the teams performed skits; even the dads and Frs. Robert Pipta and Michael O Loughlin participated! It was also great to have Bishop Gerald with us throughout the weekend. I enjoyed being a part of the camp and was able to deepen my faith. It was overall an absolutely amazing weekend and I very much look forward to doing it again! Seated in the front row - wearing dark grey tshirts are... L. to R. : Fr. Michael O Loughlin, Fr. 10 ByzanTeen Youth Rally Reflection submitted by Andrew Kardos This youth rally was an amazing learning experience for me because it gave me a time to relax and focus on my religion. It was held on the campus of the University of San Diego in San Diego, California. I met some great people who taught me a lot. What I found exciting about them is that they shared the same religion as me. The programs for the whole weekend were very interesting and kept me on my toes and awakened my curiosity. With each day I wanted to stay longer and longer so I could have fun and hang out with my friends. There were a lot of cool people there and we had fun times hanging out all night. We played a lot of games and we also sat down and talked for hours on end. When it came time to go to bed I was exhausted because each day kept me extremely busy with activities. It was an exciting time and gave me a better outlook on myself and who I can become. Another amazing thing was the activities because they were highly informative. They were very interesting and tossed a ton of information at me which was incredible. The clergy led classes that were fun because there was an interaction with students in the class. This gave me positive thoughts, about my religion. The campus was also beautiful which made me never want to leave. Everything about it was great, the dorms were highly comfortable and the architecture of the buildings was incredible with their unique designs. All together this trip was an incredible experience and makes me more and more eager to attend the next ByzanTeen Youth Rally in Maryland. 12 Pilgrimage in Olympia, Washington Olympia, WA. Before the largest crowd to have ever attended the pilgrimage to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, held on the spacious grounds of St. George Byzantine Catholic Parish in Olympia, two seminarians, Michael Bezruchka and Benjamin Crow, were ordained to the Minor Order of Subdiaconate. The Hierarchical Liturgy of ordination was celebrated by Bishop Gerald on Saturday, August 11th, at 10:30 AM. This pilgrimage to Our Lady of Perpetual Help was first held in August 2000 on the weekend nearest to the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God in conjunction with the blessing and the dedication of a shrine built to house a magnificent mosaic icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The icon itself was obtained through the efforts of the Right Rev. Joseph Stanichar, Pastor of St. John Chrysostom Church in Seattle, WA. It was blessed by Blessed Pope John Paul II. The icon was then mounted in a huge stone setting and placed behind the altar of the newly constructed gazebo-style shrine. The pilgrimage this year began on Friday evening, August 10th, with a Vesper/Divine Liturgy celebrated by Bishop Gerald with Father Stanichar as the homilist. On Saturday afternoon, the Rev. Christopher Zugger, a retired priest of the Eparchy of Phoenix, gave a lecture on icons featuring the Face of Jesus and why such icons closely correspond to the face of the man on the Shroud of Turin. This shroud is believed to be the burial shroud of Jesus. Since the early centuries of Christianity, iconographers have always copied in their icons of Jesus the features of the face in the shroud. The pilgrimage concluded with Father Lee Perry, the Pastor of St. George s Parish, and Deacon Joseph Wargacki celebrating Vespers on Saturday evening. Photos by Kelly Mandelas Pictured to the left are the concelebrants of the Liturgy together with the nuns of Holy Theophany Romanian Catholic Monastery, members of the Knights of Columbus and members of the Melkite Catholic Patriarchal Order of Jerusalem.
