2 On the Radio By Maria Neddersen Every time I get into my car, the first station I turn on the radio is FM Relevant Radio. It wasn t always that way. In the past, I used to switch from station to station, easily bored after minutes with one station or another. But Relevant Radio offers something for everyone and has become a good habit I do not want to break. A few years ago, a good friend mentioned a great little radio station with a particular program geared to Catholic moms that might interest me. So one morning, I tuned in and never laughed so hard or learned so much. From then, I was hooked. Relevant Radio continues to hook me to this day. It is a nationally syndicated Catholic talk radio station that is a wonderful resource for Catholics and people of all faiths. It offers programming that will answer questions, inform it s listeners of current issues, give hope, and inspire faith. The programs such as Morning Air, a news and entertainment segment, The Inner Life, a program for spiritual growth, Life is Worth Living with the teachings of the late Archbishop Fulton Sheen, Father John Corapi s excellent messages of the Faith, The Drew Mariani Show about the issues of faith and culture, Go Ask Your Father, a Q & A program hosted by familiar priests, Changed Forever with Fr. Larry Richards, and much more, all teach and assist one in living out their faith. All of the programs are insightful, faith-filled, relevant, humorous and inspired. During Lent, Relevant Radio becomes a vast resource for Lenten questions and answers. Many of the shows discuss particular topics related to Lent. A series called God s Plan for Your Life will be on each Friday evening of Lent relating Scripture to your daily life. Relevant Radio s online website ( has 40 links for 40 days, a calendar filled with ways to assist you in preparing for the journey to Easter. Relevant Radio is a wealth of information available at a touch of a button on your radio. An interesting quote from The Inner Life webpage states: God has an individual plan for each of our lives. How do you develop a personal relationship with God and discern how His Holy Spirit is leading you in your life? Through spiritual direction. But there is a deep and widespread trend of spiritually starved Catholics searching for reliable spiritual direction. Relevant Radio is a wonderful resource for those spiritually starved Catholics looking for more in their lives. If you haven t tuned in yet, Relevant Radio is there to bridge the gap between faith and everyday life. The History of the Knights of Columbus By Joe and Dorothy Becker A small group of men met in the basement of St. Mary s church, New Haven, Connecticut on October 2, 1881 to form the first Knights of Columbus society by Father Michael J. McGivney. It was incorporated March 29, Their goal was to be defenders of faith, families, and country. The Order s founding principles of charity, unity, and fraternity is still true today. Pope Benedict XVI commented, We need but think of the remarkable accomplishment of that exemplary American priest, the Venerable Michael McGivney, whose vision and zeal led to the establishment of the Knights of Columbus. Fr. McGivney s vision for the Order was to provide an insurance program for the widows and orphans of deceased members. It has grown to include anyone in need, even non-member families. It has been called the strong right arm of the Church and praised by popes, presidents, and other world leaders. Never in robust health, Fr. Michael McGivney died young at age 38 on August 14, By then there were 57 Councils in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Today there are more than 13,000 Councils in the United States and 13 other countries. Fr. McGivney s cause for being investigated for sainthood began in 1997 by the Vatican. The Knights of Columbus have become the world s foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. Father McGivney realized the important role of the laity in the Church. He was ahead of his time. As Pope John Paul II said, Father McGivney s vision remains as relevant as ever in the changed circumstances of today s Church and society. He showed laymen how to make an enduring contribution to their parishes, communities, and families. Locally the Kettle Moraine Council 3562 was chartered October 12, 1952, Columbus Day, by 46 men. Any good practicing Catholic man over eighteen years old may join the Knights. High School age boys may join as a Squire and then transfer at the age of 18. There are four degrees: First Degree {Charity}, Second Degree ( Unity), Third Degree { Fraternity}, and an optional Fourth Degree {Patriotic}. Kettle Moraine Council 3562 covers Hartland, Mapleton, Monches, Nashotah, North Lake, Okauchee and Pewaukee. They meet at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church the first Wednesday of the month. All monies they raise are used for Charity in the local area. The Tootsie Roll Campaign money ($8,700) is given to citizens with Intellectual Disabilities. The raffle tickets are for helping anyone with needs such as: Seminarians ($2,000), Human Needs ($300), Pro-Life ($1,200), Church Facilities ($300), Catholic Schools ($700), Religious Ed ($100), Youth Groups ($300) and Scouting ($150). This was for the year 2008! Council 3562 participates in the Christmas Poster contest, Free Throw contest, Highway K Cleanup from Tyme Out to Highway P three times a year, Pass, Punt, Kick and Soccer contest, and Ushering once a year at the Basilica of Holy Hill. Fraternal commitments such as visits to the sick and bereaved were 925 hours, volunteer service to church and community were 6,050 hours. These are just the Kettle Moraine Council s figures. Internationally the Knights of Columbus donations to Charity last year were more than $150 million and members donated 68,783,653 hours of volunteer service. Through your generosity, we exceeded our goal in 2006 thru However, the economy seemed to impact our 2009 Appeal as we only attained 92% of our $48,000 goal. Nevertheless, your continued generosity toward this crucial Archdiocesan effort is much appreciated! With your continued help, we ll exceed our 2010 goal of $50,000. Easter Hunt for Jesus ~ Saturday, March 27 10:00 am to 12:45 pm, Parish Center, North Lake Children preschool through fourth grade are invited to this morning of crafts, music, story and prayer. The morning will conclude with a special hunt and parents are invited to join their children for lunch at noon. Please make your reservations at or sue@blteresaparish.org. Operation Rice Bowl Your participation in Operation Rice Bowl ensures that Catholic Relief Services can continue assistance to those in need in more than 100 countries. Seventy-five percent of your gifts go to CRS to help farmers in Bolivia receive training to improve crop yields, children in Afghanistan gain more opportunities for quality education, communities in Ethiopia access reliable water sources even during times of drought, and other vital projects. Twenty-five percent of your gifts remain in our parish and support the North Lake food pantry. Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land The daily news reminds us of the violence and instability plaguing the Middle East, but we rarely hear of the shrinking Christian community there, one that struggles to remain in the land of Christ s birth, death, and resurrection. Please support our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land by giving to the special Good Friday Collection. This Pontifical Collection allows Franciscans and others to continue caring for Christianity s holiest sites and for God s people in the Holy Land. Please be generous in your support. THE BLESSING OF THE EASTER FOOD Saturday, April 3, 1:00 pm, North Lake It s Symbolic. Food blessed in this ceremony is intended for Easter Sunday breakfast and traditionally includes ham, sausage, bread, eggs, horseradish, wine and lamb. (This may be actual lamb meat or butter or cake in the shape of a lamb.) Food is brought in a basket or similar container and blessed by the parish priest on Holy Saturday. This is an excellent way to teach younger family members about this treasured tradition. Each item has a symbolic meaning, drawn from both the Old and New Testaments. Ham and sausage celebrate the freedom of the new law that came into effect with Christ, in contrast to the old Jewish dietary laws forbidding pork products. The bread is symbolic of the risen Christ, and eggs also symbolize hope and resurrection. Horseradish is included to represent the bitter herbs prescribed in the original Passover meal as a reminder to the Jews of the bitterness of life in Egypt. Wine is the drink of the Passover meal and the Last Supper. The lamb is a reminder of the Passover story in which lamb s blood placed above the doors of Jewish homes saved their occupants. It is also a reference to Jesus who shed his blood to save the world. Pack a basket, bring the family, and come have your food blessed. 3 THE VOICE MARCH YEAR OF THE PRIEST

4 The Secrets of Successful Marriages (50+ years) By Cornel Rosario Born Into God s Family Andrew James Collins son of Brion & Jennifer Collins Brady Christopher Steinbauer son of Chad & Kathy Steinbauer Born to Eternal Life Lawrence Bruno Ralph Fleming Don Merkel Gail Stapleton James Lund Evelyn Krueger FAITH JOURNEYS Dick and Carol Banse were married at St. Mary Church in Menomonee Falls on November 14, Father Edward Vogel officiated at the ceremony. They have two daughters and three grandchildren (two in college, one in 8 th grade). Carol reports that she met Dick at a bowling alley. She had worked with Dick s Mom, who figured out that there was something there and matched them up! Dick was a big baseball person, reports Carol. The Banses do a lot of camping with the kids every year. Having the kids and grandkids around has been great for them, and given the couple a lot of encouragement through life s ups and downs. Carol concludes: We talk to God a lot, to help keep us going. Bill and Sylvia Hoffman were married on June 23, 1951 at St. Clare Church in North Lake by Father Louis Zirbes. They have no children. Sylvia reports that she and Bill have had a wonderful life together and look forward to many more happy years ahead. They enjoy each other s company. She says that the church has been good to them and given them a lot of support over the years. Bill has many nephews and nieces, and they have also provided plenty of support. They have made numerous friends through church, and appreciate Father Tony s friendship. Christian Concerns Commission We have received some thank you s from the ministries/organizations we support. Open Door Ministries Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Meal Program (since 2003) - $17, Red Cloud Indian School, Pine Ridge, SD (2009 donations) - $7, Dear Families of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Once more, due to your support, our Santa Shop (in Pine Ridge) was a successful event. It is becoming a common practice throughout the nation for grandparents to become caretakers for their grandchildren. There are many parents who are in the military and away from home, or whose employment or educational needs put them in a situation to use grandparents as caretakers. The reservation has never been abundant with jobs or employment, and finding an adequate job is not always an option. Our Santa Shop is well attended by grandparents who are on fixed incomes. The parents and grandparents are always grateful for this particular outreach program. It provides them with the means to give gifts they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to give. (Giving Tree gifts) Many families take in children who belong to relatives, rather than leave them without a family to care for them. Often these families do not qualify for Social assistance. They rely on whatever help they can get from churches like our own Sacred Heart, and you, our sister parish, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. These people often ask us to pass on their heartfelt gratitude to the givers. That is you! Thank you so much for your help, your gifts, your generosity, and your deep faith. We pray that God who gave the First Gift, gifts you with peace, love and great joy in the new year. Wopila Tanka Mita Kola Waste! Thank you my good friends! 5 M A R D I G R A S F A T T U E S D A Y C E L E B R A T I O N Doing More During Lent By Jessica Neddersen, 6 th grade As Lent comes around the corner once again, some are filled with the dread of thoughts of sacrifices, penances an,d other things that must be avoided in order to prepare for the long journey to Easter. Lent to me means something else. Lent is when we show God our love and appreciation for Him and the sacrifice he gave to us of His beloved Son. It is a time of inspiration in kindness to others, in acts of charity for our neighbors, and in preparation for Easter in our homes and our souls. Lent to me proves to be a blessing in disguise, bringing us all closer together. This year, our family does have some specific Lenten sacrifices we will make. However, our focus is on doing something concrete to show our love for God, who is in all of us. Shoveling a neighbor s driveway after it has snowed, knitting a hat for a friend, helping my brothers with homework, doing the dishes without being asked, smiling at someone who seems down, and helping my grandparents unload groceries from the car are all acts of love I can do to make this Lent special. I hope by my acts of kindness and love, others can be more inspired to think of Lent as a happy time because we are waiting for our Savior to rise again. In these harsh days of winter, hard economic times, and sometimes sadness in our families, let us think of how to make things nicer for others and then maybe we will find the joy of the Resurrection in our own hearts. 5 THE VOICE MARCH 2010

Please to: info@blteresaparish.org June Deadline: May 11, 2010 Parish Office: (262) The Easter Vigil by Paul Turner The Easter Vigil is the most important Mass of the year. In the complete ranking of all Catholic Church celebrations, the Triduum occupies the top spot. The Triduum, which begins with Holy Thursday s Mass of the Lord s Supper, concludes on Easter, reaching its climax with the Easter Vigil. If there is one Mass in which Catholics should make every effort to participate every year, it is the Easter Vigil. If you attend church Easter Sunday morning but miss the Easter Vigil, you have missed the most important celebration of the year. (Note: Easter Vigil at Blessed Teresa is Saturday, April 3, 7:30 pm, at North Lake.) The Easter Vigil celebrates the resurrection of Christ and the commitment of believers. It has four parts. It begins with a service of light. The community gathers in darkness to hear that Christ is our light, shattering the darkness of sin. The next part of the Vigil is the Liturgy of the Word. We hear up to nine Scripture passages that tell the story of salvation, ending with the Gospel of the resurrection. The third part is the liturgy of baptism. Some catechumens have already been listed among the elect, those chosen for baptism this year. They now come forward to be plunged into the waters of new birth. Anointed with chrism, they celebrate confirmation, receiving the strength of God s Spirit for the Christian life. Then the entire community renews its baptismal promises. Together we pledge our faith in the resurrection and promise to follow Christ more closely. The Vigil culminates in the fourth part, the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The length of the celebration has sharpened our hunger for communion. Now the newly baptized will join us in the Eucharist for the very first time. At the Easter Vigil we recommit ourselves to our faith and rejoice with the newly baptized. Copyright 2003 Resource Publications, Inc.; Paul Turner, pastor Keep in your prayers Lisa Wills who will be brought into Full Communion with the Catholic Church, and Jenny Eberhardt, who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 3, at 7:30 pm, at North Lake. Catholic.net invites you to help our priests. Please join and "Adopt a Priest." Help our priests in whatever way you can, as the Holy Spirit leads you: Lift them up to the Lord in prayer, offer sacrifices for them, ask daily Our Lord Jesus Christ to give our priests the fortitude and the perseverance to stand firm in their redemptory mission as Our Lord himself desires.
