3 MUSIC NOTES Dieterich Buxtehude was one of the most important musicians in Germany during the mid 17 th century. It is not precisely known when or where he was born, but the most reliable evidence we have is that he was 70 when he died in 1707 (therefore was born in 1637), and that he was born in the city of Helsingør (a town in Denmark, now part of Sweden, and the location of the castle in which Shakespeare set Hamlet). The fact that much of his music survives today, five to six times as much as any of his contemporaries, has a lot to do with how famous he was. So famous, that a young Johann Sebastian Bach asked for a leave of absence from his job to visit and study with Buxtehude in Lübeck, a mere 250 mile walk from Bach s hometown of Arnstadt. (In fact, Bach himself is responsible for the preservation of a very large portion of Buxtehude s organ music, because he made copies and transcriptions during his visit.) 10:00 am HOLY EUCHARIST Prelude Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern Dietrich Buxtehude ( ) Hymn The sinless one to Jordan came H-120 Buxtehude s position as organist at the Marienkirche (Lutheran) in Lübeck afforded him considerable latitude in his musical career, since the composer wasn t bound by the whims of a Royal employer. His autonomy in this position was a role model for the careers of later Baroque masters such as George Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann and J.S. Bach. In 1673 Buxtehude reorganized a series of evening musical performances known as Abendmusik. (Originally initiated by his predecessor at the church) This series was so well known, that it attracted musicians from all over Europe. The Opening Acclamation Presider: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. : And blessed be his kingdom now and forever. Amen. The chorale-fantasy on Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How brightly shines the morning star) is based on the 1597 hymn of the same tune by Philip Nicolai. The morning star in this well-known hymn for Epiphany is the star that guided the Magi to Bethlehem. Buxtehude s setting dates from 1690 and it s a chorale-prelude-fantasia in several sections. The first begins with the melody of the hymn in the bass on a soft reed stop with the accompaniment in the treble. The melody then shifts to the treble line. The character then changes drastically for the second half of the hymn as it is presented by a set of rapid successions of sixteenth notes and triplets containing the melody. After a short interlude, the hymn melody is then presented in a jig-fugue format as the whole hymn is then repeated and brought to an exciting close. Buxtehude s heroic Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne (BuxWV137) is among the best known of his organ works. The opening section is somewhat improvisatory in character as it begins with a pedal solo punctuated by brief flourishes in the manual. It then develops into a more formal fantasia-like structure presenting themes we will hear later in the piece. After this section concludes, a fugal section begins, with a subject that seems inspired by the opening pedal solo. After the fugue ends, another short improvisatory passage leads us into the closing Chaconne section. The very jovial Chaconne is founded on eight repeated statements of a theme derived from the fugue subject. The piece concludes with a final improvisatory flourish in C major. The Collect for Purity BCP 355 The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. S278 For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. 10 3
4 Presider The Lord be with you And also with you. G-798 The Collect Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. The Word of God The First Reading Isaiah 42:1-9 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4 9

But when the town clerk had quietened the crowd, he said, Citizens of Ephesus, who is there that does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple-keeper of the great Artemis and of the statue that fell from heaven? Since these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. You have brought these men here who are neither temple-robbers nor blasphemers of our goddess. If therefore Demetrius and the artisans with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls; let them bring charges there against one another. If there is anything further you want to know, it must be settled in the regular assembly. For we are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion. When he had said this, he dismissed the assembly. 6 The Gospel Matthew 3:13-17 Reader The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness. Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the Form VI BCP 392 Reader The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Peace Sermon The Rev. Stuart A. Kenworthy Greetings The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of THE HOLY COMMUNION Offertory Anthem Lovely Child, Holy Child arr. David N.
