2 8:00 am HOLY EUCHARIST RITE I The 8:00 am Service of Holy Eucharist I is contained in St. David s Chapel and Chancel Missal which can be found on the piano. The readings can be found later in this bulletin. MUSIC NOTES The prelude Kommst du nun, Jesu, vom Himmel herunter auf Erden (Come tho, Jesu, from heaven to earth) is from J.S. Bach s Sechs Chorale von verschiedener Art ('Six Chorales of Various Kinds') for organ (BWV ), a collection of six chorale preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach, published in Last Sunday s prelude was also from this collection, which is better known as the Schübler Chorales, with the title 'Schübler Chorales' coming from the name of the engraver and publisher Johann Georg Schübler. All of these preludes are Bach s own transcriptions from his own large scale choral cantatas. Bach obviously regarded these pieces as major works and not just informal excerpts taken from his cantatas, since he had them formally published. The 6 Chorales provide the organist the ability to perform music from the large scale cantatas without all the work of assembling an orchestra and full choir. Kommst du nun, Jesu, vom Himmel herunter auf Erden is based on the second movement of cantata 137, Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren, but with an Advent text/title instead of the original from the cantata. The cantata scoring consisted of an alto solo accompanied by solo violin and basso-continuo. The organ chorale setting features the chorale melody in the pedal, on a softer 4 reed stop while the accompaniment and bass line are in the manuals. The postlude, Bach's Fugue in g minor, BWV 578, has the nickname 'the little g minor' to differentiate it from the larger Fantasy and Fugue in g minor, BWV 542. The little fugue was written during Bach s time in Arnstadt ( ) and it is well known as his Toccata and Fugue in d minor, so don t let the little title fool you. The fugue has become so popular over the past century that many transcriptions of it have been made; from Leopold Stokowski s full orchestra transcript, to the lively, more intimate version by the Canadian Brass. Along with the fugue subject from the Toccata and Fugue in d minor, this fugue s five measure subject is as familiar as a top 20 hit and I ve even heard it as a cell phone ring tone. The fugue is built in the typical 4 voice structure, with the subject first introduced in the soprano line, followed by the alto line, followed by the tenor line, and finally in the bass line in the pedal. After each opening statement of the subject, the fugue s subject appears five more times, and it even takes a brief journey into the relative major key before a triumphal return to g-minor, with the recapitulation of the subject in the bass line with the countersubject in the soprano. Music with H-refers to the blue Hymnal found in the pew racks. Music with S-refers to the Service Music section at the front of the blue Hymnal 1982 found in the pew racks. Music with WLP- refers to Wonder, Love and Praise, the green hymnal at the ends of the pews. BCP refers to The Book of Common Prayer also found in the pew racks. 2 11

3 The checks should list Project Retrak, HIBS, or the Bishop Walker School in the memo line. As we who have so many blessings celebrate this joyous season, let us enrich our own experience, and that of others, by spreading good cheer to those who will most benefit from our generosity. 10:00 am HOLY EUCHARIST RITE II Prelude Kommst du nun, Jesu, vom Himmel herunter J.S. Bach ( ) ST. DAVID S CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS Please mark your calendars and make an extra effort to join the St. David s parish community for these upcoming special events: SUNDAYS OF ADVENT There will be a service of Holy Eucharist added on the Sundays of Advent at 5:00pm. So, if you cannot come in the morning, there is always this option later in the day. It will be a simple evening liturgy, with no hymns, and probably go for 35 minutes or so. The Sundays are, November 27, December 4, and December 18 th - Holy Eucharist at 5:00pm DECEMBER 11 - CAROLS SERVICE There will be a Carols Service at 5:00pm offered by choristers from the British Embassy and conducted by our own organist/choirmaster, Rob Church. DECEMBER 18 - GREENING THE CHURCH Following the 10 am service on Sunday, December 18, the doors, nave, and sanctuary of St. David s will be decorated with greenery and the Advent Giving tree decorated for Christmas. If you would like to help, please stay to lend a hand. There will refreshments for helpers. Parishioners who are comfortable climbing ladders and have some carpentry tools are essential to the effort! CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES will be at 4:00pm and 10:00pm. Please note this later service has been moved an hour earlier. CHRISTMAS DAY, December 25 is a Sunday this year. There will be one service at 11:00am Processional Hark! A thrilling voice is sounding H-59 The Opening Acclamation Presider: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be his kingdom now and forever. Amen. 4 The Collect of the Day 4 The Second Sunday of Advent Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (The People are seated) The Word of God First Reading Isaiah 11:1-10 A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder s den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious. Reader: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANNOUNCEMENTS We welcome all visitors to St. David s. Please fill out a Newcomer s Card in the pew racks to receive information about St. David s. We give thanks this week for the birthday of Alexandra Caskin. HOSPITALITY TIME: Following the 8:00 and 10:00 am worship services, there will be coffee, refreshments and fellowship in the Commonwealth Room, adjacent to the chancel. WORSHIP BAGS: For our youngest worshipers, worship bags can be found on the coat tree at the back of the church. They contain coloring pages and supplies to keep toddlers and young children occupied. Your child is welcome to keep the contents of the bag, but please return the bag to the coat tree at the end of the service, so that it may be refilled for use next week. SUNDAY SCHOOL: takes place during the Liturgy of the Word (the first half of the 10:00 am Eucharist). The children are invited to leave with the Sunday School teacher during the singing of the first hymn. SO OTHERS MIGHT EAT: Two opportunities to help feed the homeless: 1) Deposit weekly donations of walking food items (granola, fruit and health bars, nuts, packages of cheese and crackers, peanut butter, fruit, tuna or salmon in pop-up containers or plastic cups) in the basket in the Narthex. 2) bake a casserole once a month. Pans & recipes are in the Commonwealth room. Bring casseroles to the church by December 15. ST. DAVID S ADVENT GIVING TREE. Advent is upon us! Beginning Sunday, Nov. 27, the Advent Giving Tree will again grace the front of the church, marking the official start of Advent. As we celebrate this season by participating in the ancient tradition of awaiting Christ s coming, the story of his birth in a stable, and the example of his life, we turn our thoughts to helping others. The Advent Giving Tree is a symbol of a spiritual place apart from the frenzy of the season. Please consider taking an ornament and fulfilling its request, and placing some heavy, warm winter men s socks to the tree s branches. The socks will be donated to Friendship Place for their efforts to help the people who are homeless survive the cold winter. The ornaments are requests for monetary gifts to fund needed items and services for Project Retrak in Africa and the Bishop Walker School in Anacostia. Please return the ornaments and checks in envelopes and place them in the Sunday offering. 9

The Invitation to Communion Communion Hymn O day of peace that dimly shines H-597 (The People kneel) The Post Communion Prayer BCP 365 The Epistle Romans 15:4-13 Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles, and sing praises to your name ; and again he says, Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people ; and again, Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him ; and again Isaiah says, The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles shall hope. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Blessing Reader: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6 The Gospel Matthew 3:1-12 Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Now John wore clothing of camel s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our ancestor ; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. The Nicene Creed BCP 358 The Prayers of the People BCP 392 The Peace The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem Prepare ye the way of the Lord The Presentation Michael Wise (c ) H-380 (v.3) The Great Thanksgiving BCP 367 Sanctus and Benedictus S-115 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Reader: People: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Christ Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
