2 Welcome! Thank you for Worshiping at St. David s today! The 8:00am Service of Holy Eucharist is contained in St. David s Chapel and Chancel Missal which can be found on the piano. The readings can be found later in this bulletin. MUSIC NOTES The prelude, The Harmonious Blacksmithby George Frederic Handel ( ), was originally written for the harpsichord - it is the last movement of the E Major harpsichord suite from The piece is in the style of an air followed by five variations on the theme. There have been a few explanations for the title of this movement over the centuries. Handel never called it The Harmonious Blacksmith, but the name seems to have originated sometime in the early 19 th century when, as the story goes, Handel had stepped into a local smithy on his way to Cannons in 1718 to escape a torrential rain storm. The blacksmith was humming a tune, which Handel liked and used in this movement of the E Major Harpsichord suite. William Powell was the name of the smithy, and the legend grew to be so widely accepted, that the local church raised money for a better memorial gravestone for Powell in Even though it is certain now that this is all untrue, the huge gravestone still stands. It reads: "In memory of William Powell, the Harmonious Blacksmith, who was buried 27. February 1780, aged 78 years. He was Parish Clerk during the time the immortal Handel was organist of this church. Erected by subscription, May 1868." The postlude, The arrival of the Queen of Sheba, is actually the opening sinfonia to the 3 rd act of Handel s oratorio Solomon. The piece is well known as a solo work today and was even a featured theme in the London 2012 games. Handel had been living in London since 1712 and he wrote a few Italian operas that were well received. After London and during Handel s time in Chandos, when he wrote various church anthems in English, he also wrote two operas in English: Acis and Galatea and Esther. About a decade or so later, Handel wanted to present Esther on stage back in London. The Bishop would not allow it, since he didn t think it proper for a religious text to be acted out on stage, thus Handel presented it in concert form and the English Oratorio style was born. We all know Handel s most famous oratorio, Messiah, but there were plenty of others s Solomon is one of them and it is the story of King Solomon and the prosperous times of Israel under his rule. This was all very symbolic of England under King George II at the time, which was also prosperous and happy. The 3 rd act tells of the Queen of Sheba visiting King Solomon. The bible tells us she came with camels bearing spices, and very much gold, and precious stone (Kings 10:2). Never again came such an abundance of spices (10:10; II Chron. 9:1 9) as those which she gave to Solomon. She came to prove him with hard questions, all of which Solomon answered to her satisfaction. They exchanged gifts, after which she returned. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

10 of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
