Encourage them not to give out their address, if they have one. If your children tell you that they have given out personal information online, contact your Internet Service Provider or the site where the information is posted to see what you can do to have it removed. 3 Second Sunday of Lent Page Three My Dear Fellow Parishioners, I am writing this on Sunday evening, March 9, having returned from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The drive down to L.A. was long and the traffic congested, but the occasion was so well worth the effort! I accompanied ten people from our parish who celebrated the Rite of Election with Archbishop Jose Gomez. This is an important ceremony, conducted on the First Sunday of Lent in almost every diocese in the world. It is celebrated with the adults, teens, and older children who will be baptized, confirmed, and receive Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. After the Rite of Election, the candidates for the Easter sacraments are referred to as the Elect. Our parish community is blessed to have ten Elect this year: Alec Caligagan, David Cardiel, Savannah Gonzalez, Howard Kong, Nicolette McCarty, Derrick Timmons, Daniel Tull, Hannah Tull, Katherine Tull, and Samantha Tull. Their photos are displayed in the church to the east of the baptism pool. Election means choice. These ten people have been chosen by God to embrace the mission of Jesus. They have been through a period of formation in the Catholic Christian way of life. They have listened to the Gospels, worshiped with us, and participated in works of service. Based on the testimony of their godparents, the Archbishop declared, The Church, in the name of Christ, calls you to the Easter sacraments. What a joyous moment that was for them! Lent is the Elect s final and more intense period of spiritual preparation for the sacraments. Our support and example during these forty days will encourage them to follow Jesus with greater generosity, and to enter more deeply into the mystery of his death and resurrection. Please pray for them wholeheartedly and often! Blessings, Catherine Shadduck Coordinator of Initiation The 2014 Elect at the Cathedral with Catherine Shadduck (holding the Book of the Elect). Faith Sharing... Around the Table ~ At meals and meetings: Read the Gospel, discuss the question ~ Matthew 17:1-9 ~ Jesus is transfigured in the presence of his disciples. ~ What elements of your present life do you need to forego in order to enjoy greater life?

In difficult times, in tough circumstances, walking in darkness and feeling alone. We don t see the stranger walking along side us. During this retreat, we will explore the companions in our lives who reveal to us God s loving presence and who give meaning to our lives. 8 Lent at Padre Serra A Season of Renewal Adoration in Lent All Fridays 2:00-7:00pm in the chapel Traditional Stations of the Cross Fridays March 21 & April 11 7:00pm in the church Living Last Supper Friday, March 28 7:00pm in the Serra Center The Living Last Supper is a thought-provoking, moving portrayal of what may have gone through the minds of the apostles when the Lord said, One of you will betray me. Interactive Stations of the Cross Friday, April 4 6:00pm in the church Children, families, and adults alike will enjoy the intimate, interactive experience of the Stations of the Cross. Opportunities for personal renewal: Family faith sharing read the gospel and discuss the question on page 3 Attend University sessions see page 5 or visit Use the Corporal Works of Mercy Web resources Daily Reflections: Subscribe to Fr. Robert Barron s daily reflections at or text LENT to Reconciliation: Saturdays 4:00pm Communal Service April 7, 7:00pm Ways to Evangelize During Lent During Lent, when your friends or co-workers express curiosity about Catholic customs and symbolism, use those moments as opportunities to evangelize! We ll run a series of questions Catholics hear during Lent and some evangelizing answers: Abstinence: So why aren t you eating pepperoni pizza on Friday? You love pepperoni pizza. You eat it all the time. Suddenly, you can t have it on Fridays?! What could possibly be going on? It must be that Catholic thing, again. Absolutely! On Fridays during Lent, we particularly remember the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. In memory of this great sacrifice, we continue the tradition of penance and sacrifice abstaining from meat on Fridays is an outward manifestation of an interior reality: the conversion of our hearts. As Pope John Paul II has said, In fact, the external aspects of fasting, though important, do not convey the full measure of the practice. Joined to the practice should be a sincere desire for inner purification, readiness to obey the divine will and thoughtful solidarity with our brothers and sisters, especially the very poor. Christ himself fasted and prayed in the desert. Through fasting and praying, we unite ourselves with the sacrifice of Christ and offer him reparation for our sins and failings. It s a little thing to give him in the face of his ultimate sacrifice, but what a grace that our God accepts and loves little gifts!
