Paul Pluth, JCL, Pastor 2nd Sunday of Lent 17 March 2019 This is the fasting I wish: sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless, clothing the naked, not turning your back on your own. Why Fast & Abstain? The Church obliges Catholics to fast and abstain in Lent. But why? Strictly speaking, fasting means only one meal a day and abstinence means not eating meat or poultry. Spiritually speaking, fasting and abstinence means indulging ourselves less and making sacrifices. And indulging ourselves less and making sacrifices is the time tested way to get sharper focus in prayer, and more energy for acts of charity. Fasting and abstaining work spiritually! When Pope Paul VI reorganized the Church s discipline of fasting in 1966, he emphasized this direction connection between fasting and prayer and good works. It had been that every Friday was a Day of Abstinence, not just in Lent. Pope Paul allowed for another sacrifice to be substituted for abstinence on the Fridays outside of Lent. What people hear is Now we can eat meat on Fridays! What the Church says is, Every Friday is a day of sacrifice, because Christ died for our salvation on Friday. Check out the ideas for Friday sacrifice on the right! -- Father Paul Pluth, Pastor It would bring greater glory to God and good to souls if Fridays found our people doing volunteer work in hospitals, visiting the sick, serving the needs of the aged and the lonely, instructing the young in the Faith, participating as Christians in community affairs, and meeting our obligations to our families, our friends, our neighbors and our community, including our parishes, with a special zeal born of the desire to add the merit of penance to the other virtues exercised in good works born of living faith. Stations of the Cross and Lent Thursday Soup Bowl Nights, Stations are at 5 pm and Soup is served around 5:45 pm every Thursday. Opening The Word: Lent through Easter, Year C, every Thursday, just after Soup Supper. Watch and reflect on a 5 to 8 minute video on the Readings of the following Sundays of Lent. The Cross of Burdens is up in the Vestibule this Lent. Write down your burden and place it on the Cross. Our RE students will pray for you and your burdens every week during the 40 Days of Lent.
