2 9:00 a.m. Holy eucharist: Rite II As an Episcopal church, we utilize two primary books in our worship: Book of Common Prayer 1979 (red) contains the order and text of the service, and whose page numbers are in the left column, and Hymnal 1982 (blue) contains the music that we sing, with page number in the right column. Service music (musical settings of the prayer book texts) has S in front of its numbers and is found in the first part of the hymnal, while hymns are found in the second part of the hymnal. Lesson Genesis 1:1-5 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. n God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. Reader Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 2

3 Book of Common Prayer Hymnal 1982 Gospel Procession congregation stands as the hymn is introduced. 121 Hymn Christ, When for Us You Were Baptized Caithness 358 Nicene Creed Gospel Mark 1:4-11 Deacon Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. Deacon Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Homily Rector A brief period of silence follows the Homily. Prayers of the People From Intercessions for the Christian People In the waters of baptism, we were called to be God s children and to minister to one another. Let us therefore pray for all those in need, saying: Lord, in your mercy, Let us pray for the church, that it may stand fast in the one faith to which it has been called. Lord, in your mercy, Let us pray for the world, that our conflicts may cease and that peace may reign. Lord, in your mercy, Let us pray for the victims of injustice, that we may work for an end to oppression. Lord, in your mercy, 3

4 Book of Common Prayer Hymnal 1982 Let us pray for the sick, that their sickness may be turned to health. Lord, in your mercy, Let us pray for the faithful who have gone before us. Lord, in your mercy, Silence Celebrant adds a concluding Collect Omniscient God, you know our thoughts and needs better than we ourselves. Accept the prayers which we now offer, and strengthen us to do your will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 360 Confession of Sin and Absolution (congregation kneeling) 360 Peace Greeting and Question of the Week Holy Communion Offertory Members of the congregation will present the offerings and oblations of our life and labor to the Lord. 5 Book of Common Prayer Hymnal 1982 S-152 Fraction Anthem Mason Martens Communion In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are encouraged to receive communion. This is the Lord s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward at the direction of the ushers, to the high altar, filling in at the altar rail from right to left, and either kneeling or standing to receive. For those who prefer not to use the steps, one of the priests will bring communion around to you in the pew. Please signal that priest to bring communion as s/he walks down the aisle. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. If you would like to receive a blessing instead, simply cross your arms across your chest. Gluten-free wafers are available at the high altar; let the priest know when you go up to receive. congregation stands when the Celebrant returns to the altar. 365 Postcommunion Prayer Blessing 117 Hymn Brightest and Best Morning Star 366 Dismissal Procession At the conclusion of the hymn, please join the Procession as it leads to the Christian Education hour for all ages.
