2 9:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist: Rite II Latecomers may be seated at this time. As an Episcopal church, we utilize two primary books in our worship: 1979 (red) contains the order and text of the service, and whose page numbers are in the left column, and (blue) contains the music that we sing, with page number in the right column. Service music (musical settings of the prayer book texts) has S in front of its numbers and is found in the first part of the hymnal, while hymns are found in the second part of the hymnal. Children and Youth are encouraged to gather in the Narthex (church entrance) and participate in the Procession at the beginning of the service. Prelude Word of God At the sound of bells, the congregation stands. Celebrant begins from the west end of the church. Acclamation Celebrant Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. People Glory to God for ever and ever. 2 From Enriching Our Worship 362 Hymn of the Month Holy, Holy, Holy Nicaea Collect of the Day Celebrant Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Collect For Welcome (in unison) Light within all light, soul behind all souls, guide our hearts and minds as we welcome those who worship today at Bethesda-by-the-Sea. Give us discerning hearts to recognize the face of the Beloved in each child of God, for often goes the Christ in the stranger s guise. In the name of the undivided Trinity. Amen. congregation is seated. Lesson Ruth 3:1-5; 4:13-17 Naomi her mother-in-law said to Ruth, My daughter, I need to seek some security for you, so that it may be well with you. Now here is
3 our kinsman Boaz, with whose young women you have been working. See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. Now wash and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, observe the place where he lies; then, go and uncover his feet and lie down; and he will tell you what to do. She said to her, All that you tell me I will do. So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When they came together, the Lord made her conceive, and she bore a son. n the women said to Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without next-of-kin; and may his name be renowned in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has borne him. n Naomi took the child and laid him in her bosom, and became his nurse. women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, A son has been born to Naomi. y named him Obed; he became the father of Jesse, the father of David. Reader Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Gospel Procession congregation stands as the hymn is introduced. 593 Hymn Lord, Make Us Servants of Your Peace Dickinson College Gospel Mark 12:38-44 Deacon Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. As Jesus taught, he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! y devour widows houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. y will receive the greater condemnation. He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. n he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. Deacon People Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Homily Very Rev. Dominic Barrington A brief period of silence follows the Homily. 3
4 358 Nicene Creed s of the People God is a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger and rich in mercy, generous and forgiving to all who cry for grace. With confidence, let us turn to our God in prayer, saying: For people throughout the world who are suffering at this very hour from drought and famine, from economic distress and social disruption, from violence and war, let us pray to the Lord. For the church throughout the world, that we, together with all our brothers and sisters in Christ, may be effective agents of social transformation and reliable messengers of hope, let us pray to the Lord. For our own country, that its wealth and power might become a force for peace, rather than conflict; a source of hope, rather than discontent; an agent of friendship, rather than enmity, let us pray to the Lord. For our own community, and especially for those among us who are dispirited and broken-hearted, who find no hope or meaning or purpose in life, let us pray to the Lord. For ourselves, that we may have the grace to rejoice with those who rejoice, to weep with those who weep, to grieve for others losses rather than our own, to be quick to forgive and slow to take offense, let us pray to the Lord. Silence Celebrant adds a concluding Celtic Collect. O Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ your Son our God, give us that love which can never cease, that will kindle our lamps but not extinguish them, that they may burn in us and enlighten others. Amen. 360 Confession of Sin and Absolution (congregation kneeling) 360 Peace Greeting and Announcements 4
5 Holy Communion Offertory Members of the congregation will present the offerings and oblations of our life and labor to the Lord. See page 7 for more information. 6 Communion In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are encouraged to receive communion. This is the Lord s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward at the direction of the ushers, to the high altar, filling in at the altar rail from right to left, and either kneeling or standing to receive. For those who prefer not to use the steps, request from an usher that communion be brought to you in your pew. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. If you would like to receive a blessing instead, simply cross your arms across your chest. Gluten-free wafers are available at the high altar; let the priest know when you go up to receive. congregation stands when the celebrant returns to the altar. 365 Postcommunion Celtic Blessing From Enriching Our Worship Wisdom of God, the Love of God, and the Grace of God strengthen you to be Christ s hands and heart in this world, in the name of the Holy Trinity. Amen. 608 Hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save Melita 366 Dismissal Please join us for refreshments in the Parish Hall immediately following the service.
