Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea Seventh Sunday of Easter May 13, 2018 Sunday after Ascension Day Recognition Sunday 9:00 a.m. Seasonal Liturgical Rotation for Easter Please turn off your cell phones. Page numbers refer to (red). Hymn numbers refer to (blue). Our white, red, and gold Easter vestments and paraments are used. Our usual silver communion vessels and alms basins are once again used. Paschal Candle is in full view throughout Easter season. service begins with the Easter Acclamation. Gloria in excelsis and Te Deum and the use of alleluia have returned to normal usage. We use no Confession with the s of the People. We use a Doxology setting full of alleluias. We use Eucharistic D and remain standing throughout the prayer. Fraction Anthem is an Easter setting of Christ Our Passover, full of alleluias. Dismissal includes alleluia, alleluia both from the Deacon and the congregation. We process out on the final hymn, and a Postlude concludes the service.

9:00 a.m. Holy eucharist: Rite II As an Episcopal church, we utilize two primary books in our worship: 1979 (red) contains the order and text of the service, and whose page numbers are in the left column, and (blue) contains the music that we sing, with page number in the right column. Service music (musical settings of the prayer book texts) has S in front of its numbers and is found in the first part of the hymnal, while hymns are found in the second part of the hymnal. Latecomers may be seated at this time. Word of God At the sound of bells, the congregation stands. Celebrant begins from the west end of the church. Easter Acclamation Celebrant Alleluia. Christ is risen. People Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia. Celebrant continues. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 180 Hymn of the Month He Is Risen, He Is Risen Unser Herrscher 225 Collect of the Day Celebrant Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. congregation is seated. Lesson Acts 1:15-17, In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus-- for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one 2

of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection. So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. n they prayed and said, Lord, you know everyone s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. Reader Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Gospel Procession congregation stands as the hymn is introduced. 450 Hymn omit * stanzas All Hail the Power Coronation Gospel John 17:6-19 Deacon Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus prayed for his disciples, I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. y were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. y do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth. Deacon Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. 3

358 Nicene Creed Homily Greg Knight A brief period of silence follows the Homily. s of the People Rejoicing in the resurrection of Christ, let us remember in prayer the Church, the world, and all those in need saying, For Christ is risen. From Washington National Cathedral For the whole bright earth, so lovingly created and compassionately redeemed, that it may speak of the glory and majesty of God. For Christ is risen. For the Church, whose life is hid with Christ in God, that in all its diversity, witness may be made to one Lord, one faith, one baptism. For Christ is risen. For those who govern and hold authority in the nations, that they may be led to govern with equity and justice, bringing life to those in the shadow of death. For Christ is risen. For all who suffer in mind, body, or soul, for whom Christ is risen, that they may be healed and comforted. For Christ is risen. For all who have died, and for all who grieve, that in Christ who triumphs over death, they may find light perpetual and blessed assurance. For Christ is risen. For all gathered this day, that we may be freed from fear and renewed in faith. Bless those who seek to know your love, and all who come to your holy table. For Christ is risen. Celebrant says Joining our voices with the faithful in every time and place, we offer our prayers to you, O God, rejoicing in the presence of the risen Lord, your son our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Easter is more than a Sunday. It is actually a seven-week season of the church year, the Great Fifty Days that begin at sundown the evening before Easter Day (when we celebrate the Great Vigil of Easter) and lasts for six more Sundays until the Day of Pentecost. se weeks of celebration will be dramatically different from the solemnity of Lent. Because Easter focuses on our new life in Christ, our liturgy reflects this joy. 4

360 Peace We stand for prayer throughout the service, and we omit the General Confession that normally follows the s of the People. Of course, personal confession to God is always appropriate and may be made before our worship begins. Recognition of Bethesda s Ministries Today we will recognize those who serve in one or more of Bethesda s core areas of ministry: Bethesda Cares, Education, Evangelism & Communications, Fellowship & Hospitality, Outreach, and Worship. Greeting and Question of the Week Holy Communion Offertory Members of the congregation will present the offerings and oblations of our life and labor to the Lord. See page 11 for more information. 6 364 Breaking of the Bread Easter Fraction Anthem Victory arr. H. Pysher Celebrant Gifts of God for the People of God. Behold who you are; become what you receive. Communion In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are encouraged to receive communion. This is the Lord s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward at the direction of the ushers, to the high altar, filling in at the altar rail from right to left, and either kneeling or standing to receive. For those who prefer not to use the steps, one of the priests will bring communion around to you in the pew. Please signal that priest to bring communion as s/he walks down the aisle. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. If you would like to receive a blessing instead, simply cross your arms across your chest. Gluten-free wafers are available at the high altar; let the priest know when you go up to receive. congregation stands when the Celebrant returns to the altar. 366 Postcommunion Easter Blessing God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. 494 Hymn stanzas 1-3 Crown Him with Many Crowns Diademata 6
