Page numbers on the left side of the column refer to (red). Hymn numbers on the right side of the column refer to (blue). S for Service Music numbers are found in the front of (blue). A large-print version of this leaflet is available from our ushers. In case of an emergency Bethesda has two AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) available in the sound booth at the back of the church and outside the Parish Hall.
9:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist: Rite II Latecomers may be seated at this time. As an Episcopal church, we utilize two primary books in our worship: 1979 (red) contains the order and text of the service, and whose page numbers are in the left column, and (blue) contains the music that we sing, with page number in the right column. Service music (musical settings of the prayer book texts) has S in front of its numbers and is found in the first part of the hymnal, while hymns are found in the second part of the hymnal. Children and Youth are encouraged to gather in the Narthex (church entrance) and participate in the Procession at the beginning of the service. Prelude Word of God At the sound of bells, the congregation stands. Celebrant begins from the west end of the church. 355 Acclamation From Enriching Our Worship Celebrant Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. People Glory to God for ever and ever. 408 Hymn of the Month Sing Praise to God Mit Freuden zart Collect of the Day Celebrant Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Collect For Welcome (in unison) Light within all light, soul behind all souls, guide our hearts and minds as we welcome those who worship today at Bethesda-by-the-Sea. Give us discerning hearts to recognize the face of the Beloved in each child of God, for often goes the Christ in the stranger s guise. In the name of the undivided Trinity. Amen. congregation is seated. Lesson Esther 7:1-6, 9-10; 9:20-22 king and Haman went in to feast with Queen Esther. On the second day, as they were drinking wine, the king again said to Esther, What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your 2
request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled. n Queen Esther answered, If I have won your favor, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me-- that is my petition-- and the lives of my people-- that is my request. For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have held my peace; but no enemy can compensate for this damage to the king. n King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther, Who is he, and where is he, who has presumed to do this? Esther said, A foe and enemy, this wicked Haman! n Haman was terrified before the king and the queen. n Harbona, one of the eunuchs in attendance on the king, said, Look, the very gallows that Haman has prepared for Mordecai, whose word saved the king, stands at Haman s house, fifty cubits high. And the king said, Hang him on that. So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. n the anger of the king abated. Mordecai recorded these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, enjoining them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same month, year by year, as the days on which the Jews gained relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and presents to the poor. Reader Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Gospel Procession congregation stands as the hymn is introduced. 552 Hymn Fight the Good Fight With All Thy Might Pentecost Gospel Mark 9:38-50 Deacon Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. John said to Jesus, Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us. But Jesus said, Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable 3
358 Nicene Creed fire. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched. For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. Deacon Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Homily Rev. Margaret McGhee A brief period of silence follows the Homily. s of the People God is a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger and rich in mercy, generous and forgiving to all who cry for grace. With confidence, let us turn to our God in prayer, saying: For people throughout the world who are suffering at this very hour from drought and famine, from economic distress and social disruption, from violence and war, let us pray to the Lord. For the church throughout the world, that we, together with all our brothers and sisters in Christ, may be effective agents of social transformation and reliable messengers of hope, let us pray to the Lord. For our own country, that its wealth and power might become a force for peace, rather than conflict; a source of hope, rather than discontent; an agent of friendship, rather than enmity, let us pray to the Lord. For our own community, and especially for those among us who are dispirited and broken-hearted, who find no hope or meaning or purpose in life, let us pray to the Lord. For ourselves, that we may have the grace to rejoice with those who rejoice, to weep with those who weep, to grieve for others losses rather than our own, to be quick to forgive and slow to take offense, let us pray to the Lord. Silence 4
Celebrant adds a concluding Celtic Collect. O Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ your Son our God, give us that love which can never cease, that will kindle our lamps but not extinguish them, that they may burn in us and enlighten others. Amen. 360 Confession of Sin and Absolution (congregation kneeling) 360 Peace Greeting and Announcements Holy Communion Offertory Members of the congregation will present the offerings and oblations of our life and labor to the Lord. This is the Lord s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward at the direction of the ushers, to the high altar, filling in at the altar rail from right to left, and either kneeling or standing to receive. For those who prefer not to use the steps, request from an usher that communion be brought to you in your pew. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. If you would like to receive a blessing instead, simply cross your arms across your chest. Gluten-free wafers are available at the high altar; let the priest know when you go up to receive. congregation stands when the celebrant returns to the altar. 365 Postcommunion Celtic Blessing From Enriching Our Worship Wisdom of God, the Love of God, and the Grace of God strengthen you to be Christ s hands and heart in this world, in the name of the Holy Trinity.
