Although Holy Communion and other Sacraments are offered only to baptized and chrismated (confirmed) Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church, all are invited to receive the Antidoron (blessed bread) from the priest at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. The Antidoron is not a sacrament, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church. St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:1-4 Today's Readings: BRETHREN, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to witness against me - it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. 1

The Gospel according to Luke 5:1-11 At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. 3 St. Barbara Fall Clean Up Day After Church Coffee Hour (1:00 PM-4:00 PM) The Parish Council seeks volunteers to help with a variety of tasks scheduled for a clean-up Sunday. Please bring a change of clothes with you to church and after the coffee hour come and help us with cleaning. Light duty tasks> Vacuum cobwebs from windowsills & cleaning windows. Vacuum dead bugs from overhead light fixtures in hallway. Collect cardboard boxes from storage room for recycling. Heavy duty tasks> Take Festival tents outdoors and pressure wash them. Take festival fans outdoors to clean and wipe dry. Roll out Festival grills for pressure washing. Cleaning supplies, brushes, and towels will be provided. We need three pressure washers, and presently have only one committed to the effort. Please contact Johnny Mariakakis (mariakakis@att.net) to sign up, and also if you can bring us a pressure washer. The more volunteers, the less hours we will need to devote to these tasks. We hope to accomplish all the cleaning by 4:00 PM. Afterwards come join us for pizza and refreshments at Tomato Jakes near Southpoint Mall. Thank you! Hello Everyone! A MESSAGE FROM MICHELLE CLAYPOOLE I hope you are all doing well:) Next week we have the privilege of making thank you cards for veterans! Catherine Mariakais and Philoptochos are doing a Fill the Bag project for our wonderful Veteran Americans that have sacrificed so much for our country. There are 2 parts to this project. (Strangely, I am telling you about part 2 before part 1...So pay close attention to the dates ) The bags will include personal essential items i.e. deodorant, socks, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, etc. will be assembled by our youth (and parents if you want to participate) on Saturday, October 22nd at 1pm at St. Barbara's. Our goal is to assemble 100 bags. Now this brings me to our activity this Sunday, Sept 25th...we are having our youth make Thank You For Your Service cards to go inside of each of these bags. Again, the goal is 100 bags, so we also need 100 thank you cards! We will start (and may complete) making these cards this Sunday, September 25th, in Sunday School class. 8 Philoptochos Chapters Across the Country Honor Archbishop Demetrios and Make A Difference with Children At its May 2015 meeting, the National Board adopted a cross-generational initiative to honor His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios on the occasion of his Nameday on October 26. In conjunction with Make a Difference Day, which occurs each year in late October, chapters across the US were encouraged to sponsor projects involving the children in their parishes in acts of kindness in order to teach our youth about giving back to their communities and to directly involve them in philanthropy. Projects included thank you cards to veterans, get well cards to patients in hospitals, personal care kits for the homeless, canned food drives, service to senior citizens, FILL THE BAG INITIATIVE Sponsored and coordinated by St. Barbara s Philoptochos Chapter, Fill the Bag is a philanthropic project aimed at providing necessities to those less fortunate from various demographics within our community at large. The inaugural edition will benefit Veterans and be donated to the VA hospital for distribution. Note that included in each bag will be a Thank You for Your Service card from the Sunday School children. All parishioners are invited to participate in the filling of the bags by donating any quantity of the items listed below. Cash donations are also appreciated to defray cost of items not received from donations. Collection boxes will be located at the rear of the fellowship hall. Bags will be assembled Saturday October 22 in honor of Make a Difference Day. The deadline for donation of items is Sunday, October 16. Thank you in advance for your support. We are meeting at least twice per month in a chant group that shares things pertaining to psalmody with an emphasis on Neo Byzantine music and performance practices. A choir is emerging out of this endeavor. It is called the Byzantine Voices Choral Society (of St. Barbara). The principle aim of this group will be liturgical as opposed to academic. Already the choir has been invited to chant for at least 2 occasions. If you would be interested in this choir and it's dedicated work on the idioms and practice of Byzantine style music please contact Fr. Stavroforos at the church or Tony Thompson for more details. 8

9 PARENT MORNING COFFEE AND MONTHLY BOOK DISCUSSION Blueprints for the Little Church begins by providing a theological underpinning for and explanation of the little church within the home. Creating an Orthodox home, the authors argue, is really about raising saints. I love this quote: It s not about manners it s about holiness. It s not about good behavior it s about a life given completely to God in loving humility and peace. -Blueprints for the Little Church However, just telling parents that they should raise saints can lead to frustration if there is no guidance. The book, using the wisdom of the Church fathers, provides that guidance. Organized by the three major disciplines of piety prayer, fasting, and almsgiving Blueprints for the Little Church walks families through practical ways they can involve their families in the life of the Church. What I Liked Real Examples from Real Families One of my favorite things about the book is the way that it uses real examples of real families. In every chapter there are several block quotes from Orthodox mothers and fathers about how they actually live out that particular principle (fasting, creating a routine of prayer, etc.) in their own families. This is exactly the kind of advice and encouragement that I need! It also helps readers realize that there is no one right way to incorporate Orthodox spirituality into the home. Each family is different and, therefore, their home lives will look different. Quotes from Saints I also appreciated the quotes from saints that were scattered throughout the book. I ve even typed up a few and placed them around my house! One of my favorites was from St. John Chrysostom: If the man who buried his one talent gained nothing, but was punished instead, it is obvious that one s own virtue is not enough for salvation, but the virtue of those for whom one is responsible is also required. Therefore, let us be greatly concerned for our wives and our children, and for ourselves as well, and as we educate both ourselves and them let us beg God to help us in our task. If He sees that we care about this, He will help us. -St. John Chrysostom The Appendix on the Church Calendar Finally, I also really appreciated the appendix on the church calendar. In this part of the book, the authors provide a short explanation for each feast of the Church as well as a sample craft that children could do. While I m not a particularly crafty person, I did get some ideas for my church school class. Who This Book is For I wholeheartedly recommend Blueprints for the Little Church as an excellent resource for Orthodox families. If you are an Orthodox Christian or interested in Orthodoxy: Plans are being made for a once a month parent breakfast coffee at a local coffee shop like Bean Traders, where we can talk about the book amongst ourselves with Fr. 10 Jim Fedash's Kidney Transplant Adventure Jim is 67 years old in need of heart surgery and kidney transplant. In January of 2014 Jim was referred to a Nephrologist by his doctor due to his overall health. Bloodwork showed signs of possible kidney failure. He then found out he han only one kidney and it was worn out. The left kidney was just a dead mass and never knew if he was born with only one living kidney or if it died in his youth. After years of diabetes taking insulin shots, high blood pressure, Barrett's Mucosa, sleep apnea, back surgery for ruptured disks and living on ibuprofen and many, many medications it has left his with a kidney that is functioning at 10%. He had only been able to work part time until 3 months ago. He has quit working as it became too difficult to walk and breathe. Since January, 2014 Jim has been in the hospital or outpatient surgery 7 times for peritonitis, diverticulitis, 3 surgeries for fistula to begin dialysis, acute kidney failure and heart failure when his heart dropped to 30. One peritoneal catheter and one fistula did not grow but the third on is growing slowly. Jim now has an enlarged heart in the upper vessel needs a heart catheterization which will then put him on dialysis. His veins are now so small he had two outpatient surgeries to put a balloon in to nudge the fistula to grow so that the blood would get moving. His blood pressure is now under control and his insulin amounts have been reduced twice but he has other problems. Having only one kidney he receives special iron shots every 2 weeks and if his iron drops to low, as it has done twice, he has to receive a special kind of iron shot that he gets in groups of 3 for 3 months. The transplant team suggested we look for a living donor as we are in a race against time and a living kidney would be better for Jim since he only has the one kidney and would save him from dialysis for a long time. The kidney donor coordinator at Vidant Health Systems is Karen Chamberlin, her number is While any kidney is welcome the goal is to find a living donor. The living kidney lasts longer than a deceased kidney. It also alleviates stress on the current transplant list, no more waiting. We are also getting a second opinion from University of North Carolina Hospitals and going on their transplant list also. The purpose of this fund raiser is to help with anything not covered in the transplant process and medical bills. While the living donor's transplant is covered other expenses are not such as interstate travels, hotels, parking, time off from work, copays etc. The figure we were given is approximately $8,000-$10,000. With Jim no longer able to work and my job being cut to 20 hours last October, and now ending September 30th there are no funds to pay for doctors, hospital bills, copays and medicines. I spend a lot of time taking Jim to doctor's visits and doing every thing at home which does not help my job prospects. We have spent all our savings. Asking for help is difficulut and we would be blessed and very grateful for any help. Finding a kidney for Jim is more important than any pride we have. Our family, especially the grandchildren would thank you a thousand times over.
