And after six days Jesus took along Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And after six days Jesus taketh unto him Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart: And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. Six days later Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them privately up a high mountain. Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain by themselves. Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. Six days later Jesus took Peter and the brothers James and John with him. They went up on a very high mountain where they could be alone. Six days later, three of them saw that glory. Jesus took Peter and the brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain. Six days after what? Note the tense of παραλαμβάνει and ἀναφέρει: What function? Are there any observations we can make about the 3 disciples in terms of how they are listed here? (In BW8, try using Resources > Miscellaneous > Stephan, Biographical Bible [but it's identification of this John has some problems...].) What is this ὄρος ὑψηλὸν? When else in Matthew does something occur κατ ἰδίαν? And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothing became bright as the light. And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And he was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as dazzling as light. As the men watched, Jesus' appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. There in front of the disciples, Jesus was completely changed. His face was shining like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. Sunlight poured from his face. His clothes were filled with light. What does it say happened to Jesus' person in Mark and Luke? What does it say happened to Jesus' clothes in Mark and Luke?

And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with him. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Moses and Elijah also appeared before them, talking with him. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. And suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. All at once Moses and Elijah were there talking with Jesus. Then they realized that Moses and Elijah were also there in deep conversation with him. What is a good way to translate καὶ ἰδοὺ? What voice is ὤφθη? How should it be translated? Wouldn't you love to know what they were talking about? (Cf. So Peter answered and said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are here! If you want, I will make here three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. And Peter answering, said to Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." So Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, I will make three shelters one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." Then Peter spoke to Jesus. 'Lord,' he said, 'it is wonderful for us to be here; if you want me to, I will make three shelters here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' Peter blurted out, "Lord, it's wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I'll make three shelters as memorials-- one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." So Peter said to him, "Lord, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Peter broke in, "Master, this is a great moment! What would you think if I built three memorials here on the mountain--one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah?" What mood is εἶναι? How is it functioning here? How does the RSV render What exactly does Peter want to make?

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him!" While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them. And lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye him. He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my one dear Son, in whom I take great delight. Listen to him!" While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!" While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" He was still speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and suddenly from the cloud there came a voice which said, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him.' But even as he spoke, a bright cloud came over them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him." While Peter was still speaking, the shadow of a bright cloud passed over them. From the cloud a voice said, "This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him. Listen to what he says!" While he was going on like this, babbling, a light-radiant cloud enveloped them, and sounding from deep in the cloud a voice: "This is my Son, marked by my love, focus of my delight. Listen to him." What kind of grammatical construction is αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος? Can a bright cloud overshadow anyone? Where else in the Bible does a cloud overshadow? (νευελη επισκιαζω) How do you want to translate ἰδοὺ here? "My beloved Son" or "My Son, the Beloved"? What tense is εὐδόκησα and what is its sense here? (In BW8, use the Resources tab and check out discussions in grammars by Burton and Robertson.) What mood and tense is ἀκούετε? What is the implication?

And when the disciples heard this, they fell down on their faces and were extremely frightened. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And the disciples hearing, fell upon their face, and were very much afraid. When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. When the disciples heard this, they were overwhelmed with fear and threw themselves down with their faces to the ground. When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. When they heard this, the disciples fell on their faces, overcome with fear. The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground. When the disciples heard the voice, they were so afraid that they fell flat on the ground. When the disciples heard it, they fell flat on their faces, scared to death. How do you want to translate And Jesus came and touched them and said, "Get up and do not be afraid." And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And Jesus came and touched them: and said to them, Arise, and fear not. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Do not be afraid." But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid." But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." But Jesus came up and touched them, saying, 'Stand up, do not be afraid.' Then Jesus came over and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." But Jesus came over and touched them. He said, "Get up and don't be afraid!" But Jesus came over and touched them. "Don't be afraid." Where else in the Bible is touching (απτω) associated with raising (εγειρω)? Noting the tense ( ), what is the force of μὴ φοβεῖσθε?

And when they lifted up their eyes they saw no one except him--jesus alone. And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. And they lifting up their eyes saw no one but only Jesus. And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. When they looked up, all they saw was Jesus alone. And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but Jesus. And when they looked, they saw only Jesus. When they opened their eyes, they saw only Jesus. When they opened their eyes and looked around all they saw was Jesus, only Jesus. Literally, the text says, "when they lifted up their eyes..." What's awkward about that translation in English? The phrase οὐδένα εἶδον εἰ μὴ αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον is somewhat cumbersome. Note that the and give two different ways of trying to translate the phrase in general and αὐτὸν in particular. And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them saying, "Tell no one the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: Tell the vision to no man, till the Son of man be risen from the dead. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Do not tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order, 'Tell no one about this vision until the Son of man has risen from the dead.' As they went back down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." On their way down from the mountain, Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had been raised from death. Coming down the mountain, Jesus swore them to secrecy. "Don't breathe a word of what you've seen. After the Son of Man is raised from the dead, you are free to talk." What kind of grammatical construction is καταβαινόντων αὐτῶν? What exactly is a ὅραμα? What is the voice of ἐγερθῇ? How do you want to translate it? (Be sure to check a lexicon.) Compare Matthew's version of the Transfiguration to the accounts in Mark and Luke!
