1 St. Andrew s Net for August, 2013 BROWN BAGS AND QUESTIONS Brown Bags & Questions, affectionately known as BBQ - is for anyone and everyone who has a desire to learn something new about the rich tradition of our Episcopal Church, the formation of our Anglican roots, the creeds we profess, the Prayer book we use and the liturgy that gently guides our way. The setting is informal and your questions are encouraged. All who are interested will meet with Fr. Phil briefly after church on August 11th and as a group will decide what day and time works best for everyone. Please add your name to the list on the Sign-Up Board if you are interested in this class. That way if you aren t able to be at the meeting on the 11th, we ll call you with the date and time decided on by the group. COME & SEE The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come from Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. John 1:43-46 COME & SEE SUNDAY + AUGUST 25, 2013 This will be a Sunday of exceptional WELCOME! 2 St. Andrew s Net for August, 2013 Page 2 August Did you know that the Episcopal Church has a Calendar of Saints? Well, you do now. The answer is yes. Yes we Episcopalians are quick to recognize and celebrate all those Holy Women and Men who have showed us the way of faith, given us the promise of hope and served as our vision for what love really looks like. You can find their names listed by the dates of their celebrations on The 2013 Episcopal Kalendar. In addition, a brief biography and appropriate scriptural readings tells their story in the publication Holy Women, Holy Men Celebrating the Saints. Did you know that August 1 st is the Feast Day of Celebration for Joseph of Arimathaea? Well, you do now. Quoting from Holy Women, Holy Men; All that is certainly known of Joseph of Arimathaea comes from the narratives of the burial of Jesus in the Gospels. Though John speaks of Joseph as a secret disciple of our Lord, and associates him with Nicodemus, another member of the Jewish Sanhedrin who was drawn to Jesus, we know nothing of any further activity of these men in the early Christian community. Later, however, legends developed about their leadership in the Church. One of the more attractive is the story of Joseph s coming to the ancient Church of Glastonbury in Britain and bringing with him the Holy Grail (the cup used at the Last Supper). This tradition cannot be dated earlier than the thirteenth century. Although this and other stories obtained wide credence, they are not based on historic facts. Joseph s claim for remembrance does not depend upon such legends, however beautiful and romantic. When our Lord s intimate disciples were hiding for fear of the authorities, Joseph came forward boldly and courageously to do, not only what was demanded by Jewish piety, but to act generously and humanely by providing his own tomb for the decent and proper burial of our Lord s body, thus saving it from further desecration. Did you know that the Episcopal liturgy for The Burial of the Dead is the most widely acclaimed service of its kind? Well, you do now. Quoting from the Book of Common Prayer; pg 507: The liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all its meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we, too, shall be raised. The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that neither death, nor life, nor angles, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. We celebrate life, abundant and eternal life. And we rejoice in the fellowship of saints who have been examples of faith, visions of hope, and guarantors of life everlasting. Did you know that a memorial garden is being planned east of the red doors and south of the parlor? Well, you do now. From the very beginning of our building expansion, a memorial garden was planned for the area immediately east of the new front entry. Those among us who have been here awhile may well remember the lovely fountain and gardens that flanked the church s original entry. Not only were these gardens a gracious and welcome respite, they were consecrated as well, set apart as holy ground in lasting memorial to the saints interred therein. Did you know that, according to the Episcopal Calendar of Saints that November 1 st is the celebration known as All Saints Day? Well, you do now. And I can think of no better way to celebrate this day than to take advantage of that celebration to re-consecrate the new Memorial Gardens. Did you know that we could complete our new memorial gardens before November 1 st? Well, you do now. Yes we can. Yes, we can with God s help, with your prayers, with your thoughts and suggestions, with your creativity and labor, and with your memorial gifts. Did you know all this? Well, you do now. Blessings, Fr Phil
3 St. Andrew s Net for August, 2013 Page 3 Thoughts of a deacon. Thank you! You did it! You gave enough money for us to provide an evening meal for the children at Camp New Hope. Thank you! Thank you! There was even a bit left over, which is designated for the kitchen building fund. And thank you to those who volunteered to help Carol Browning, Sandy Rodriguez & Carolyn Williams. We left here a little before 2 o clock, arrived at Sequoyah State Park about 4 p.m., got the oven going & began preparing the dinner, which was served at 6 p.m. for some 60 or so hungry souls. Happily, the campers set the tables & clean the kitchen! We four cooks stopped at Subway in Wagoner for our supper & were home by 9 p.m. The campers & the staff were so appreciative. They had been swimming that afternoon & were truly hungry. Thank you again for giving us the opportunity to feed them. Try to stay cool! Love to you all...melissa FROM THE PARISH REGISTERY On Wednesday July 24, 2013 Jacob Alexander Telker was sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Welcome Jacob into the household of God. Special music for the sacrament was offered by Jacob s dad, Joseph, accompanied by Fran Rahn. Sponsored by Ricky Martin and Diane Hamilton, Jacob invited the guests to the Common Room for chocolate cake and conversation. The evening was a blessing to Jacob, a blessing to his family and a blessing to our church. ECW Update All ladies of St. Andrew s take notice! The Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer are soon to be past, so we need to be gearing up for ECW Fall Activities! The wheels are already in motion for interesting programs and hopefully profitable fund-raisers. Our first meeting will be a salad luncheon on Wednesday, Sept 11th. This will be Sign-Up Day, so be thinking how you would like to contribute. Remember many hands make light work and more fun too! We ll be looking for all your bright shining faces with a salad in tow in Sept. Dessert, drinks and surprises provided! Watch for more details to follow. Blessings to all, Sunny (your new Vice President) We ve been talking about this for awhile now it s time to do it! Let s meet once a month for an evening of games! Mexican Train, Uno, Rummy, Farkle (Pharkle), Scrabble, Aggravation, Monopoly, Apples to Apples, Boggle.you name it! Let s play it! Bring, Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, the kids, Aunt Bessie and Uncle Fred anyone and everyone who loves to have fun playing family games! We re thinking about a Friday (early).but we re looking for feedback. It would be good if it could be at a regular time..like 1st Friday s or 4th Sunday s or..whatever works! Do we want to have a Potluck?...Brown Bag?... Pizza?...no meal..just snacks? Let Fr. Phil or Fran know of your interest and/or preference of day, time and meal/snack choice. Watch the Dipper for the date!
