2 St. Andrew s Net for September, 2012 Page 2 September A late summer, early autumn September day is just perfect for hanging your laundry out to dry. It s not like we don t have modern conveniences at our house, because we do. In fact we have a brand new pair of ultra modern, front loading mechanical monsters that will wash and dry anything and everything. I haven t been fully briefed about their advantages, nor do I know how to start and adjust the multiple settings, but listen to what they can do. The washer is capable of washing up to 15 pairs of blue jeans, plus a dozen towels, the living room carpet, all the undergarments collected from the neighborhood, our puppy Cinderella and the four hubcaps off of Donnas car. This entire load will come out sparkling clean simply by the manipulation of the various dials and settings, while adding the proper amount of soaps and softeners. The dryer dries it all. It s that easy! And I agree, it should be that easy, but it s not for me. I ve tried the dryer a couple of times, never with any success. I put a few things in, throw in my dryer sheet, turn a few knobs, and adjust a few settings and finally I ll push the start button. Then I ll return an hour or so later only to find my things wadded in a damp bunch. Even when Donna is at the controls there are times when distractions call us away from the laundry, leaving the wash waiting in the washer. After a few days this is not a good thing. And the dryer, even in the hands of a capable operator is prone to misplace socks and such at regular intervals. Therefore, I m advocating for September to be Hang Out Your Laundry Month. So, grab the laundry basket, gather up those wonderful old wooden clothespins and head for the clothesline. Be bold! Hang your laundry out in the open. The need for airing and freshness is real. When Bishop Ed visits St. Andrew s on the 23 rd a forum will ensue reflecting on the work of the church s General Convention. A number of topics will be covered and discussed by our Bishop and Delegates. And, without question we ll revisit the vote and the approval for considering a form of liturgy for the blessing of same gender unions. This is perfect for the clothesline and deserves to be aired. Think about it. We come from a common hamper and find our place along a common line. Socks next to sheets, colors mixed in with the whites, rugs and rags blend in where ever, gaily colored shirts dance in the breeze lending variety and atmosphere to the entire line. Each article is noted for sharing an equal exposure to God s light and life. The individual items, without regard to color, texture, size or use become common benefactors of God s grace; each in its own shape fills its volume with the fresh breeze of God s Holy Spirit. They all came from one hamper and they will eventually return there, refreshed, renewed and gathered once again, one to another. There always seems to be space along the clothesline to add a little something more. Here s another recommendation for Hang Out Your Laundry Month. Karen Thomas has spent the last year serving St. Andrew s as a Lay Reader, Lay Eucharistic Visitor, and Healing Prayer Minister. She and her husband Thurman have tended the community garden and Karen has, almost single-handedly awakened Delaware County to the plight of the poor among us. Bridges Out of Poverty programs are now gaining a foothold and beginning to bear fruit. In addition, Karen has traveled to OKC once a month, discerning her calls to Holy Order as an aspirant to the Deaconate. This past August, Karen s formation was delayed, possibly until next May. Not at all what we had all hoped for, but, this is not unlike my dry everything, front loading monster machine. No matter which direction you turn the dial there s a good possibility that you ll need to start again...and again, if necessary. For now, hang it out with the others and let a fresh breeze lift it to greet God s grace. There s plenty of space along the clothesline for a presentation of sacrifice and service, just as there is always room for joy, laughter and love under the September sun. There may be other issues that qualify for the clothesline. I m confident that there are. And, you may have some things of your own, waiting, wadded in a damp bunch that would benefit from being hung outside in the sunshine for awhile. So, go bold and lift them up to God. Don t give it a second thought; God has already seen all of our dirty laundry. And still he sends warm sunny days with soft breezes to mend what is broken, heal what may be damaged and renew and refresh what was once soiled. There is always a little more space. Grab a few clothes pins and hang your hurt out on the line to mend, pin your sorrow next to it. Shake out your concerns and hang them out, and then watch them blow in the wind. Be bold! Give everything to God. Your laundry will never look better. I ve set a basket of wooden clothespins on the narthex table to remind and assist you during, Hang Out Your Laundry month. Blessings, Fr Phil

3 St. Andrew s Net for September, 2012 Page 3 Thoughts of a deacon... Prayer...Why do we pray? Seriously, why do we pray? Have you ever thought about it? Have you ever wondered about it? I mean, we all do it...but why? I m referring to corporate prayer, during a church service, as well as our private prayers when we re simply talking with God. Why do we pray? Historians tell us that mankind has always sought a higher power to assist us in our journeys. Deep spiritual hunger is in every human heart, and it isn t unique to any particular civilization. We all have it. As long as man has been on this earth, we ve had it. We all yearn for a deeper connection, a spiritual connection. Some civilizations have worshipped nature the sun and the moon, the trees, water, the wind always something out there always a search for some connection. Ever since time began, mankind has been searching for God. And we re told that God s one desire is to have all people return to him. So that s why we pray...we re reaching out to the divine; we re trying to connect with our spiritual father. And how do we do that? We attempt to build a relationship with him. You see, it s really very simple. Prayer puts us in conversation with God, and conversation helps us build relationship. That s what we ve been yearning for since time began. And it s also what God wants. It took mankind a long time to find the one true God; all the background work has been done for us. All we need to do is talk to him and build a relationship with him. I will absolutely guarantee that he ll be your very best friend...or as the kids are saying, your bff. (your best friend forever!) Love, Melissa ECW News Cooler temperatures are allowing us to once again use our brains without being so addled by the heat. Our plans for the year will present all of us with an abundance of opportunities to serve and be served. We, your officers, feel that we have assembled a very rewarding and informative schedule of monthly programs. You will receive the complete list at our Sept. 12th meeting. Be Prepared!!!!!!...Wednesday September 12th 12:00 salad luncheon. Drinks and dessert will be provided. There will be fun, prizes and surprises for all, so bring your smile, an exciting tale of your summer adventures (short please!), and your favorite salad to share. It is our hope to gather all of our different outreach programs under one roof, so we hope to inform and transform all of you. As you will learn from my talk in October, ECW is alive and well in the world and providing caring and sharing all around us. God Bless Donna Lawrence, President DATES TO REMEMBER Wed.
