2 Year C- 4 th Sunday 2019 My story continues.. In Tanzania, I did not have a parish, but some local people used to come to the Chapel at the school on Sundays when they realized that there are two priests staying there. Most of those people did not speak English and so we made some efforts to read in Kiswhili language so that we can offer Mass for that local community. We succeeded to a great extent and started celebrating Mass in their language. Most of the weekends I used to go to Lake Tanganyika to buy some fresh fish for us and for the students. I also started keeping a few goats as a means to get some milk for our use. We also planted some vegetables to keep ourselves busy. In the second year of the School we got eight more students. The students had great difficulty with the English language because their primary education was in Kiswahili. Books were a rare commodity in our School! Books were not available and we did not have the money to buy them even if they were there. Some of my friends from India helped me with some books on Economics, Political Science and History. At the start of the second year of the School, my fellow priest said he is planning to return to India at the end of that Academic Year because he felt that the work in that Mission is not rewarding. I wanted to continue there because I had that passion for Mission. My fellow priest informed our Religious superiors in India that he wants to go back to India at the end of that year. He also informed our superiors that it won t be good for me alone to continue there. That posed a problem for me regarding my future. I did not like the idea of returning to India after two years. I expressed my desire to my Provincial in India that he allow me to continue in Africa. He gave me permission to look for possibilities where I would be comfortable. The next phase of my missionary life begins there. (My Missionary story continues next week..) This Fourth Week we have the continuation of the Gospel of last week from Luke Chapter 4: Jesus began to tell them, today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. Well, that was just the beginning of his sermon. The initial response of the people was very positive. They were amazed at his teaching because he taught with authority. That does not mean that Jesus held any position in the Jewish religion. In fact, some of them wanted to hear more from him. But some of them were critical and wondered how the son of a carpenter could be so wise and commanding. Some among his audience were offended by the content of his teaching. Some others who had been looking for a triumphant Messiah refused to accept Jesus as the promised Messiah. Jesus claimed that he has come to be the light of the Gentiles. This was something ordinary Jews could not stomach. After hearing him preach, some in the congregation began to question whether Jesus was even a prophet. Realizing these thoughts, Jesus made the comment that prophets are never accepted in their own hometown. Jesus brought to the attention of his audience the examples of two prophets, Elijah and Elisha. These prophets did not work wonders among the chosen people. Rather, they went to two Gentiles- a widow in Sidon and Naaman the Syrian. Not because there were no sick and needy in Israel, but because the people in Israel were unwilling to receive the word of God. By presenting these examples, what Jesus is trying to communicate is that unless they repent, they will miss out the blessing he has brought for them. Jesus would turn to the gentiles if the chosen people refused to repent and turn to him. Some wanted proof that Jesus was a prophet of God. Instead of turning to Jesus, they turned against him and tried to kill him by throwing him off a cliff outside the town. That s a great contradiction - right after the Synagogue worship, plotting to kill Jesus. One would naturally wonder why these people went to the synagogue! Nobody likes to be told they are wrong! Antony Vadakara, CMI Your Pastor TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The song of the angels, Holy, Holy, Holy, resounds from our lips at every Mass. There was a widespread belief in the first religions of the world that God stirred creation into being by a word, a song, a musical note. Music and a sense of God s presence have always been inseparable. In the liturgy, your voice is invited into this song as the priest names the reasons for our praise. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, and we are not passive onlookers, but participants in this glory. Catholic prayer no longer assigns this angelic hymn to a choir, but gives it to you to sing. Even if your voice is thought to be suitable only for a well insulated shower stall, you are called into this song. We are born to sing just listen to a baby testing the full range of newly discovered vocal abilities. Soon we get shushed and hushed into quiet, and given lots of messages that our voices are unwanted, and that we need to raise our hands in order to be heard. All of that is overturned in liturgy, the place where God waits to hear us come alive in the song of all creation. In heaven, everyone s in the choir; why not start practicing now? Nevertheless, they remind each other, Is this not Joseph s son? Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. 4 Installation Mass St. Mary Parish welcomes our New Pastor Fr. Antony Vadakara, CMI. His Excellency Bishop Jaime Soto will preside over the Installation Mass of Fr. Antony as Pastor during the 9:30am Mass on Sunday, February 17, Refreshments will be served in the hall afterwards. All parishioners, volunteers and friends are cordially invited. St. Mary s Mardi Gras Crab Feed Mark your calendar, February 9, Come out and enjoy good food, good people and a good time at our Mardi Gras Crab Feed. We will have a great raffle and music to dance to. The menu includes Jumbo shrimp with Cajun cocktail sauce, salad, cornbread with honey butter, chicken and sausage gumbo served over rice, crab and peach cobbler. All this for $45 per ticket. December found our lovely widows planning the Christmas party. We decided to "party" in our Holy Spouses' Room instead of going out to a restaurant. Robert Rossi, Emily Rossi's son, owner of Vince's Restorante, was asked to cater the event. The food was absolutely delicious!! The charge was to ask the widows to make a donation to one of Robert's waitresses who lost everything in the Camp Fire in Paradise. What a wonderful Catholic man! Our special guests were Father James who celebrated our beautiful Mass; Father Jossy who joined us for his final visit before heading back East; Father Antony, our new Pastor; and Father Sijo, our Chaplain. Lots of laughter and joy permeated the room! An ornament exchange was our Christmas gift to each other. January gave rise to cold weather, and so hot soup, warm garlic bread, a yummy salad and a delicious dessert were enjoyed by all. Thank you, Gloria, Emily, Dolores and Jo. Father Sijo was our Mass Celebrant and gave a rousing homily on St. Luke's Gospel of the man full of leprosy. Father's sermons are always full of hope. Thank you, Father Sijo. We also had a guest speaker in January. Fernando de la Rosa, owner of Security Pacific Real Estate, and a member of St. Mary's Financial Board, spoke on the many facets of the real estate market such as reverse mortgages, estate planning and trusts. He was an inspiring speaker and a great help to all of us. Thank you, Fernando.! Our meeting in February falls on Friday, February 8. 5 HOLY HOUR February 7 Holy Hour Devotion is the Roman Catholic Tradition of spending One Hour in Eucharistic Adoration in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament. In 1673 Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque stated that she had a vision of Jesus in which she was instructed to spend an hour every Thursday night to meditate on the sufferings of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. This practice later became widespread among Roman Catholics. The inspiration for the Holy Hour comes from Matthew 26:40. In the Gospel of Matthew, during the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before his crucifixion, Jesus spoke to his disciples, saying "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me. In keeping with this tradition, St Mary offers a Holy Hour every first Thursday of the month. You are welcome to come and adore or you may simply lay your cares at the feet of Jesus. Adoration begins promptly at 7pm. If you come late, please enter in silence and sit in back of church so as not to disturb those in silent adoration. Praise be Jesus! Now and Forever! ST. World Marriage Day Renewal of Vows On Saturday, February 9, 2019 Bishop Jaime Soto will preside at a special 11:00 am Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in which married couples will receive a special blessing and have an opportunity to renew their marital commitments. Flu season and the suspension of the cup and other precautions The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has reported that the incidence of flu and flu-like illnesses is widespread and has reached a level requiring that we enact preventive measures to mitigate the possibility of infection at Mass. In order to protect the health and wellbeing of everyone, Bishop Soto has issued the following directives: The use of the Communion cup is suspended temporarily. Receive the Body of Christ in the hand (although receiving on the tongue is permitted) Do not shake hands. Offer the sign of Peace to those around you with a simple nod, saying peace be with you. Do not hold hands during the Our Father. Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are reminded to cleanse their hands with an alcoholbased antiseptic before and after administering Holy Communion. This also applies to those who take Holy Communion to the home-bound. The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and other Holy Days does not apply to those who are sick. If you are sick, stay home and take of yourself. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. And pray for those who are sick. The administration of Holy Communion in both kinds will resume as soon as the Bishop deems it safe and prudent to do so. Over 23 schools competed. Our team practiced and studied for weeks to prepare for the competition.
