We see both elation and fall, hope in the midst of the darker sides of our natures. If we allow it, these Gospels hold a mirror to our own fickle hearts. The crowds cry "Hosanna" and the Apostles profess allegiance unto death. In a manner of days -- even hours -- Jesus is betrayed, abandoned, denied, condemned, tortured, and executed. As God, he could have stopped this horrific narrative from unfolding, but he doesn't. He allows free will to play itself out. There are nearly two millennia between this spectacle and us. We can stand safely removed, if we choose. But Lent invites us to return to this story. Lent invites us to find ourselves in the people we encounter there. Are we the repentant woman at Bethany? Are we naysayers of such lavish piety? Have we acted in a way that betrays those we love or denies what we know to be good and true? Have we fallen asleep in our faith? Have we unfairly accused others of a crime or immorality we imagine, though perhaps they didn't commit? Do we help others carry their burdens? Do we stand in solidarity with those who suffer? Do we care for the dying? This week, take up today's Gospel again. Look carefully at the Passion narrative and sit with it in silence. Find yourself in the story and ponder its meaning for your own life. Journey with Jesus to the foot of the Cross so that you too may say, along with the faithful centurion, "truly this man was the Son of God!" PARISH SACRAMENTAL LIFE Sacrament of Baptism Parents who are presenting a first child for baptism should attend a Pre-Jordan meeting with Fr. Mike before setting a date/time for the celebration. Can be during the Mass or at another time. Registration can be made on the parish website under the Sacramental Life tab or by calling the parish office. Sacrament of Confirmation Normally, formation for Confirmation takes place as part of the faith formation program. Please contact the parish office for more information. Confirmation candidates are asked to participate regularly in the Sunday liturgy. Sacrament of the Eucharist The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic Christian lives. The three parishes have opportunities to celebrate every weekend. The Eucharist is also celebrated Tuesday through Thursday at St. Ann, Tuesdays at Janesville Nursing Home, and Fridays at New Richland Care Center. Sacrament of Reconciliation See cover of bulletin for confession times; also by appointment. Forgive me Father for I have sinned. It has been days, weeks, months, years since my last confession and these are my sins. I am truly sorry and I ask for penance and absolution. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick Please contact the parish office when someone is hospitalized and/or homebound. If at the hospital, please ask the hospital staff to contact the parish office if you so desire. Sacrament of Marriage Couples should meet with Fr. Mike at least 6 months in advance of the anticipated wedding date to begin marriage preparations. Neither a wedding date nor a reception hall should be set before meeting with the pastor. Sacrament of Holy Orders Are you thinking about the possibility of the permanent diaconate or the ministerial priesthood? Please see Fr. Mike for more information. 3 TO JOIN FLOCKNOTE TEXT PARISHIONERS TO 84576
4 IN LOVING MEMORY Joan A. Lohberger, age 88 of Waldorf, died peacefully on Saturday afternoon, 17, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems ~ Mankato. Joan Anna, the daughter of Claus and Gertrude (Hodapp) Hammerstrom, was born on October 26, 1929, in Mankato. Following her graduation from Mankato High School with the class of 1947, Joan was united in marriage to Ralph Schwichtenberg; they later divorced. In 1964, Joan was united in marriage to Gerald Jerry Lohberger at the Little Brown Church. They enjoyed attending many dances together, wintering in Alamo, Texas, and spending time with their family and friends. Joan worked for a few years at the elevator in Waldorf, but her main specialty was making all types of dresses by hand. Over the years, Joan went through a number of sewing machines as she worked to create anything someone would want. She also enjoyed tailoring clothing, crocheting afghans, and spending time in her flower and vegetable gardens. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; son, Terry Schwichtenberg; first husband, Ralph Schwichtenberg; and by her siblings, Kenneth Hammerstrom and Elaine (Robert) Leiferman. She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry; children, Elaine Witkowski, Ken (Sue) Schwichtenberg, Jim (Diane) Schwichtenberg, and Patti (Paul) Schlaak; eleven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and five greatgreat grandchildren; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, 22, at St. Joseph in Waldorf, with Fr. Michael Cronin, Pastor, presiding. Interment was at St. Joseph Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Joan s family requests memorials be directed to American Diabetes Association, ALS Association, St. Joseph Catholic Church, or to the donor s choice in her memory. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY Last weekend, the parishioners really came together to help out the Denn family in their pursuit of a new handicapped van for their family. I m so glad that we could help the Denn family and especially Brooklyn in this significant way. The total gift came to $8, We hope to see the van in action soon! Fr. Mike WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER It felt like a honeymoon...i couldn t wait to get home and see her at the end of the day. husband who attended a Worldwide Marriage Encounter. 5 PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE TRIDUUM The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery. The liturgical services that take place during the Triduum are: Mass of the Lord's Supper; Good Friday of the Lord's Passion; Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord At our parishes we celebrate Holy Thursday at St. Joseph in Waldorf, Good Friday in New Richland and Janesville, the Easter Vigil in New Richland, and Easter Sunday in Waldorf and Janesville. Please begin to plan ahead so that you can have the opportunity to celebrate all of these important moments even if they happen to occur at a different parish church than you normally attend. The single celebration of the Triduum marks the end of the Lenten season, and leads to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil. MEMORIAL GIFT The parish of St. Ann gratefully acknowledges a gift of $ in memory of Mrs. Joann Tuvey. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. JOURNEY THROUGH GRIEF 8-week grief support group for families and individuals who have experienced the death of a loved one. Thursdays, April 12 - May 31, at Christ the King Church in Mankato. Call for info. KC CALENDAR WINNERS $ Chad and Tenia Wolff ; $50.00 Yvonne Butturff, Kevin McCabe, Katie Kruse, Bill Kopischke, Madelyn Wolff, Mary J. Wolff. Congratulations! TRI-PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL On 15, the tri-parish pastoral council met at St. Ann for their quarterly meeting. Following prayer, the group discussed a number of issues related to parish life. With regard to worship and spiritual life, the council would like to continue to encourage Eucharistic Adoration before each weekend Mass, as well as, Extended Adoration at St. Ann during the week. There is also a desire to see more folks singing as a choir at Mass much like what happens at St. Joseph. What about a children s choir once a month? The faith formation program seems to be going well and we would like to add more opportunities for parents to get involved. A new fund has been set up for each parish called the St. Vincent de Paul Caritas Fund to help parishes offer some assistance to folks in need. The parishes continue outreach services thanks to the help of many volunteers working with coordinators: Barb Ahlman, Mary Bohlen, and Marilyn Stenzel. The next meeting will be Thursday, June 21, at Waldorf, 6:30 PM. Thank you to all the members for their dedication of time and talent for the benefit of our parishes. Fr. Mike 5 VISIT OUR WEBSITE:
