2 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT March 26, 2017~ Fourth Sunday of Lent Page 2 Partner Parish of St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph MISSION STATEMENT T he Living Faith Community of Saint John the Baptist, Scottdale, PA and Saint Joseph, Everson, PA are bridged by our common Baptism, while maintaining our respective ethnic heritages. We are called by Jesus Christ to be a nurturing community through worship and service. W e are committed to preserve our Catholic beliefs centered on the Eucharist as we become better disciples while continuing to develop strong lay leadership. G uided by the Holy Spirit, we share a vision for the future. We will become a vibrant Partner Parish where all feel loved and welcomed. Today s Readings First Reading : The selection and anointing of David as the king of the Israelites a new era in the history of the people of god. It is clear from the account that god is the one who makes the decision, a choice that is not based on the normal criteria. Once again, the ways of the Lord are not the ways of human beings. Despite his humble beginnings the spirit of the Lord will guide David and he will establish a great nation. The house of David will be renowned; in a future generation another shepherd will spring from the Root of Jesse, of the family of David. Responsorial Psalm 23: The Good Shepherd psalm is surely one of the most beloved passages of the Bible. The psalmist uses the very familiar image and role of a shepherd to identify the Lord and to describe the intimate relationship that the Lord has with his people, the sheep of his flock. Like the shepherd, the Lord is protector, provider, and nurturer. The tender care that the Lord provides the whole flock and even a single one of them becomes the mark of Jesus own ministry generations later. Second Reading: The contrast of darkness and light is one of several such contrasts that occur in the Lenten Scriptures. Others include temptation and transformation; thirst and overflowing water; fasting and feasting; blindness and sight; death and new life. Paul reminds the Epesians that they once lived in darkness, a spiritual state before their faith in Jesus Christ, but now they live in the light. The Easter imagery here is obvious and it serves to prepare both the elect and the baptized to hurry toward the celebration of Christ, the Light of the world. Gospel: The contrast of darkness and light underscores both the healing of the blind man and the teaching of Jesus about who is spiritually blind and who can truly see. The encounter between Jesus and the man born blind confronts the religious thinking of the crowds and the religious leaders. It becomes a vehicle for Jesus to expose them to the intervention of God in human affairs and to see if their faith is ready to accept him. When the man regains his sight he professes his belie in the son of Man, like the Samaritan woman he becomes the bearer of Good News, if only the others can see it. Next Week: Fifth Sunday of Lent: Ezekiel 37:12-14; Psalm 130: 1-8; Romans 8: 8-11; John 11: 1-45

5 WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR. Fourth Sunday of Lent-Laetare Sunday. M ost Catholics today are used to the Mass being conducted in English, and they hardly ever think about the fact that Latin remains the official language of the Catholic Church. But occasionally, Latin reasserts itself, as it does in the case of Laetare Sunday. Laetare Sunday is the popular name for the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Laetare means "Rejoice" in Latin, and the Introit (entrance antiphon) in both the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo is Isaiah 66:10-11, which begins "Laetare, Jerusalem" ("Rejoice, O Jerusalem"). Because the midpoint of Lent is the Thursday of the third week of Lent, Laetare Sunday has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration, on which the austerity of Lent is briefly lessened. The passage from Isaiah continues, "rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow," and on Laetare Sunday, the purple vestments and altar cloths of Lent are set aside, and rose ones are used instead. Flowers, which are normally forbidden during Lent, may be placed on the altar. Traditionally, the organ was never played during Lent, except on Laetare Sunday. Laetare Sunday is also known as Rose Sunday or Refreshment Sunday, and it has a counterpart in Advent: Gaudete Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, when purple vestments are exchanged for rose ones. The point of both days is to provide us encouragement as we progress toward the end of each respective penitential season. Special thank you to all, who have already made their 2017 DLA pledge. Please, continue to support your parish, your parish projects and your Diocese! St. John s amount pledged to date stands at:$30,136 and St. Joseph s amount pledged to date stands at: $13, I encourage all of you to make the pledge in the next couple of weeks.
