AHEPA CRAWFISH BOIL AHEPA will host its annual Crawfish Boil on Sunday, March 31, at 4:00 pm on the Cathedral grounds overlooking Bayou St. John. All members, those interested in joining the organization and young men over 14 years of age interested in joining a reactivated Sons of Pericles chapter, are invited to attend. ICON RAFFLE AHEPA will sell raffle tickets for a beautiful icon of Jesus' Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem. It is encased in a wood and silver frame and was created by the Kellion of St. John the Baptist on Mount Athos. Tickets are $5 apiece and $20 for five. The drawing will be at the AHEPA Palm Sunday Luncheon on April 21. All proceeds will go toward charitable and philanthropic endeavors. In the past two years, funds supported Greek Wildfire Relief, Hurricane Harvey Relief, St. Basil Academy, AHEPA Scholarship Fund, as well as the local Philoptochos Thanksgiving and Christmas projects and the Cathedral Montessori School buy-a-brick project. All children preschool through 5 th grade are encouraged to participate. LOCAL ORATORICAL FESTIVAL Everyone is invited to attend the local Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. This year s Festival will take place on Saturday, March 30, at 10:00 am in the Cathedral. Following the orations light refreshments will be served in the Coffee Room, where announcements of finalists will be made. PASTRY WORKSHOPS - GREAT FUN! GOOD FRIENDS! GOOD FOOD! Join the Pastry Committee for weekly workshops every Tuesday and Wednesday, except HOLY WEEK. Tuesday evening workshops will be scheduled soon. SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL Sunday Church School attendance has been excellent this year, and students who have missed only four classes or less will be given special recognition. If you would like your child to make up a few Sundays, extra credit will be given for any service attended during Lent and/or Holy Week (other than Sunday Liturgy). Message from Father George TODAY IS FORGIVENESS SUNDAY CHEESEFARE SUNDAY The Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes (3:1) reminds us: For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven. There are many seasons in our life. We enjoy seasons of school when we are younger, we enjoy seasons when we work, and many of us God-willing will enjoy seasons of retirement from work. Our Holy Church begins a season tomorrow with Kathera Deftera, or Clean Monday, as we enter the season of Great Lent: the forty days of preparation before the Great and Holy Week when we celebrate the Passion, the Death, and the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As we move from season to season, we hear the words of Jesus in today s Gospel reading as He counsels His followers in three areas. They are as follow: (1) to forgive one another, (2) to fast in a proper and true manner, and (3) to store up their treasures in heaven. As Christians we are enjoined to follow the command of our Lord given to us on this Cheesefare Sunday. We are encouraged by our Church to fast both physically and spiritually to help us focus on God. And, we are encouraged to do more good works and be sensitive to our fellow man's needs in order to help us focus more on God. However, before we can begin our Lenten Journey of Preparation there is one thing we must do. Jesus spoke to us about it in today s Gospel reading. It is our need to ask and give forgiveness. Our Church puts so much emphasis on this aspect that today is also known as Forgiveness Sunday. In fact, across the Orthodox world, congregations will offer a special Vespers Service tonight, which is called the Forgiveness Service. You see, all of the fasting, all of the attendance at the Church services during Great Lent, and all of the good works we do is for nothing if we have not forgiven, or if we have not asked forgiveness from one another. To make this service more accessible to you, we will begin Great Vespers at the conclusion of today s Coffee Fellowship. So, after the Divine Liturgy please join your Cathedral family next door in the Hellenic Cultural Center for the Coffee Fellowship but return when the beginning of the Vespers is announced (about forty-five minutes to an hour later). Let us enter into this season of Great Lent in a spiritually focused way: fulfilling the commandment of our Lord Jesus as we forgive each other.

For behold, I will not hinder my lips from crying to You: O merciful Lord, have mercy on me who have fallen Cheesefare Sunday, also called Sunday of Forgiveness Today is called Cheesefare Sunday because it is the last day dairy products or eggs are eaten before Pascha for those keeping the Lenten Fast. It is also called Sunday of Forgiveness, which refers to the onset of Great Lent, a period of intense fasting and a reminder of our need for God s forgiveness. Great Lent guides our hearts, minds, and spiritual efforts on returning to Him in repentance. The first day of Great Lent is tomorrow, March 11, and is called Clean Monday.

Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.
