Sacrament of Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is offered each Saturday at 1:00PM. and at other times by appointment with one of our priests. PROJECT ANDREW - An evening of prayer and fellowship for young Catholic men considering priesthood. The next scheduled meeting will take place on Sunday, October 23rd, at St. Mel s Church, th Street in Flushing. Special guest speaker will be Bishop DiMarzio. For additional information contact the Vocations Office at or vocations@diobrook.org PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY - Prayer shawls are for those who are in need of comfort, to provide hope and healing to those who are most in need of a reminder of God s love for them. FAITH FORMATION Religion classes for children in Grades 1 through 8 attending public school are held on Sunday mornings following the 9:15AM Family Mass in Gregorian Hall. Diocesan Guidelines require two years of preparation for first Holy Communion. Children 6 years of age or older who have not been baptized must receive two years of instruction before receiving the sacrament of Baptism. In all cases, parents/guardians must make an appointment to speak with Sr. Patricia Anglin at the Office of Faith Formation RCIA - If you are an adult, 18 years or older and interested in completing your Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion) now is the time to register. 5 10/16/2016 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM THE PASTOR S DESK I am on the cutting edge of the baby boom, which means that I am also at the tail end of the population who can remember not having a television set at home. Some afternoons I walked around the corner to my cousin s house to watch Captain Video with her on her family s new set with the nine-inch screen. But at home the radio still ruled supreme. To this day I remain a devotee of radio. We knew people by their voices. Who can forget hearing Arthur Godfrey or Fibber McGee s Molly or Carlton Fredericks as he railed against white bread, or Pegeen Fitzgerald with her husband, Ed, who introduced himself as the Great Irish Liberator, or Ethel Merman hosting Jimmy Durante and Milton Berle? And, of course, the then-monsignor Fulton Sheen! As Woody Allen remarked in the voice-over at the end of his film, Radio Days, I've never forgotten any of those people...or any of the voices we used to hear on the radio. Although the truth is...with the passing of each New Year's Eve... those voices do seem to grow dimmer and dimmer. The voices of sportscasters, too, became so familiar that it is almost impossible to imagine the game without the voices of such worthies as Ralph Kiner, Red Barber and Mel Allen. Cont. We are blessed and honored to have the iconic voice of Vin Scully lead this new recording of the rosary, said Ray McKenna, the founder and president of Catholic Athletes for Christ, in a statement announcing the recording s late September release. There is no better storyteller alive today than Vin Scully, and his narration on this recording helps bring alive the stories of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The recording is available as an audio CD or as a digital download. What a fantastic way to keep his voice alive Vin Scully has chosen! We can hope, all of us, that when we have been called home to heaven our voices will remain alive in the memories of the people whom we have loved. And we pray that our voices will be remembered as loving voices, pronouncing words of understanding, compassion, encouragement, blessing and love. And God send us more voices like Vin Scully s on our radios and televisions and digital devices! HURRICANE RELIEF - The tragedy of Hurricane Matthew and the damage done to Haiti and the southeastern coastal states are sad reminders of the fragility of our world. We have an opportunity to join as one community and support one another in prayer and action. The man known as the voice of baseball is back, this time lending his voice to an audio recording, The Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, produced by the group Catholic Athletes for Christ in collaboration with Immaculate Heart Radio. COLLECTIONS - The collection for the week of October 9th amounted to $8,157 for the parish. Thank you for your generosity.

6 ARISE PROGRAM began this past Tuesday. There are 60 participants in the program. Let us pray for the success of the ARISE Program. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION: 6th Grade Cooperstown Team will be hosting a Car Wash at Jiffy Lube, located on Jericho Turnpike, Floral Park, on Sunday, October 16th, 12:00-4:00PM. Come out and support the team! TEEN GROUP REGISTRATION will take place on Wednesday, October 19th, at 7:30PM in the newly refurbished Gregorian Hall. Please bring ID. The registration will cost $20 and checks should be made out to SGTG. All are welcome especially high school students. RENAISSANCE GROUP will be holding a Pizza Party on Friday, October 21st, at 6:30PM, in the Oak Room. Please bring your own beverage. Mass will be at 10:30AM followed by lunch at Villa d Este Restaurant, which is located on Jericho Turnpike in Floral Park. The cost of the luncheon is $40. The luncheon menu is as follows: champagne punch, salad, pasta, Talapia Marechiara, File of Sole Oreganata, Chicken Francese, Chicken Parmigiana, Eggplant Rollatini, soda, coffee, tea and dessert.
