5 TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM PASTOR S DESK I cannot describe the feeling with words, but it was unbelievably beautiful and great - U-Boat Captain Richard Hardegen One of the most notable moments in the history of the Long Island Railroad came in the early morning hours of June 13, Four Nazi spies, deposited off the shore of Amagansett by a U-boat, caught the 6:59AM train for Manhattan. One of them went on a 36-hour gambling spree in the Big Apple, then continued on to Washington, D.C, where he and his buddies were arrested. As it turns out, the boat immortalized in LIRR lore was not the only U-boat lurking off Long Island. Two weeks ago, 105-year-old Richard Hardegen passed away in Bremen, Germany. During WWII he participated in Operation Drumbeat, in the course of which he captained his submarine U-123 right into the mouth of New York Harbor. Cont. Right about now, I am ready to take my summer break from writing this column and take off for Lake Pocotopaug. This summer I will celebrate the 70 th Anniversary of my first setting eyes upon the lake of clear and sparking water, welling up from springs of crystal hidden neath the hills around it. The feelings that gripped Richard Hardegen when he laid eyes upon Manhattan were mine six years later as I got my first glimpse of Pocotopaug. And I would give away a kingdom to turn the clock back to that enchanted moment. Before I go, however, I must salute Father Randy Rentner who has been assisting us on Sundays for the last several years. In August, he will be leaving the Eastern Seaboard and heading west to take up a new assignment as parochial vicar in a parish in Colorado. We have very much enjoyed having him aboard the good ship S.S. Gregory the Great, and we wish him smooth sailing ahead. On the night of January 14, 1942, he climbed to the bridge and caught sight of Manhattan s illuminated skyline. I would have given away a kingdom for this moment if I had one, he said.
