It urges all to act with justice and compassion towards others. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10 Paul praises the Thessalonians for receiving the word of God so eagerly and totally. Word of their faithfulness has spread throughout Macedonia and Greece; they have become a model for all Christians. Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40 Matthew recounts the incident in which a lawyer, seeking to entrap Jesus, asks, Teacher, which commandment of the law is the greatest? With simplicity and authority, Jesus responds that the first commandment is to love God with one s entire being; the second is to love one s neighbor as oneself. 3 HIS WORD TODAY BY REV. WILLIAM J. REILLY Thus, says the Lord: You shall not molest or oppress the alien, for you were once alien yourselves in the land of Egypt. You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry If he cries out to me, I will hear him, for I am compassionate. From the earliest pages of the bible, concern for aliens, widows and orphans were a priority. In the Acts of the Apostles, the life of the first Christians, the same vulnerable persons were addressed, leading to the vocation of the first deacons. Today we seem to overlook the helplessness of refugees, those fleeing war, poverty and famine. How many persons have been forced to leave home, family in search of freedom and humane conditions. Unfortunately, they seem only to be a statistic. People do not want to leave their land and their family to live in camps with oppressive heat, little food, and unhealthy conditions. They are forced to do so fleeing cartels and gangs. In the United States years ago, they were called DP s, and displaced persons were looking for a welcome and harbor was given to them. As we read the book of Moses today, take a moment to consider the plight of those who are calling out to us. They are the very ones the Lord will listen to, and we are the ones called by Him to answer.
