3 Order of Service The Gathering Please stand as the Civic Procession enters the church Processional Hymn, during which standards may be presented Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices, who wondrous things hath done, in whom his world rejoices; who from our mother's arms hath blessed us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, with ever-joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us; and keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all ills in this world and the next. All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, the Son, and Holy Ghost, supreme in highest heaven, the one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. 4 Welcome and introduction Prayers of Penitence Priest We confess our sin, and the sins of our society, in the misuse of God's creation. Priest God our Father, we are sorry for the times when we have used your gifts carelessly, and acted ungratefully. Hear our prayer, and in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. Priest We enjoy the fruits of the harvest, but sometimes forget that you have given them to us. Father, in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. Priest We belong to a people who are full and satisfied, but ignore the cry of the hungry. Father, in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. Priest We are thoughtless, and do not care enough for the world you have made. Father, in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. Priest We store up goods for ourselves alone, as if there were no God and no heaven. Father, in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. The priest pronounces the assurance of forgiveness 2

5 Hymn of thanksgiving All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice: him serve with mirth,1 his praise forth tell, come ye before him and rejoice. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed; without our aid he did us make: we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take. O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud, and bless his Name always, for it is seemly so to do. For why? the Lord our God is good, his mercy is for ever sure; his truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure. 6 The Word of God Reading: John 13: 1-15, Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus answered, You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand. Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered, Unless I wash you, you have no share with me. Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head! Jesus said to him, One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you. For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, Not all of you are clean. After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet.
