Dammananda Newsletter April Katina Robes Offering A Damma Talk at Dammananda Viara, San Jose, November 11, 2001 By Sayadaw U SÊlÈnanda You are going to offer Katina robes to te Samga in a moment. As you probably know, tis is an annual ceremony, were individuals and groups offer Katina robes to te Sanga. I ope you remember wat s special about Katina robes. First of all, Katina robes can be offered to te Sanga in a monastery only once in a year. Tat means you cannot offer Katina robes to te Sanga at a monastery twice in te same year. Secondly, te Katina robes can be offered only during a specified period, wic starts from te end of Vassa to te next full moon day. In oter words, Katina robes can offered between te day following te full moon of October (Tadinkyut) to te full moon day of November (Tazaungmon). Even during tis one mont, you can offer Katina robes to a monastery only once. So offering Katina robes to te Sanga is indeed a rare opportunity tat only comes once in a year. Tirdly, Katina robes are to be offered to te Sanga, and not to an individual. So, you sould know te meaning of te word 'Sanga.' You all know tat Sanga means te community of Bikkus or monks. But, you sould be aware tat Sanga according to Vinaya is different from Sanga according to Sutta and Abidamma. In Vinaya, Sanga means a group of four monks. In Vinaya, if tere is only one monk, it is referred to as an individual monk. If tere are two or tree monks, tey are called 'Group', but not 'Sanga.' If tere are four or more monks, peraps undreds or tousands, tey are called 'Sanga.' So, wen you offer te Katina robes to te Sanga, you are offering not just an individual, or a group, but to te vast collection of monks all over te world. Tat s wy offering Katina robes is special. Tere are two kinds of Sanga. Wen we say "Samgam saraóam gaccami - I go to Sanga for my refuge or I take Sanga as my refuge," we mean all disciples of te Budda tat ad attained enligtenment. But wen we say "I offer tis robe to te Sanga." we mean all te Sanga in te world including bot tose wo gained enligtenment and also tose wo are not yet enligtened. Today, wen you offer te Katina robes, you will offer tem to te Sanga; tat means all monks, all disciples of te Budda - not only te Enligtened Ones but also te yet unenligtened monks. In Teravada Buddism, te word 'Sanga' means te community of monks only. It is never used for lay people. I want you to understand tis. Nowadays te word 'Sanga' is used for lay people also. I was not aware of tat usage of te word Sanga until I came to tis country. Here, tey call temselves 'Sanga, Sanga' and so on. A group of lay people, wo practice meditation, are also called 'Sanga'. But I tink tat can create confusion in te future. Wat does Sanga mean? Lay people or monks? In Teravada Buddism, Sanga is a tecnical term tat means only te community of monks and nuns. Today you will offer te Katina robes to te Sanga. Te Sanga must ave some qualities or some fulfillment to be able to accept te Katina robes. Te Sanga must ave spent te Vassa or tree monts of rainy season at one monastery. During tat period of tree monts, te monks must stay in tat monastery and tey must not go out overnigt unless tey are invited. Even wen tey are invited, tey cannot stay more tan seven days or six mornings outside te monastery. Tey must come back to te monastery witin seven days. At te end of tree monts rainy season period, te Sanga perform a ceremony called 'Invitation Ceremony.' Invitation means inviting te members of te Sanga to point out offenses or wrong doings if tere are any, and to promise to correct te wrong doings promptly and dutifully. Only tose wo stay in a monastery for te wole tree monts witout breaking teir stay and wo perform te invitation ceremony are entitled to accept Katina. Wat do we mean by breaking te stay? If during te tree monts, a monk goes out te monastery and stays outside for more tan seven days, is Vassa is said to be broken, and e is not entitled to receive te Katina. Te Sanga tat accept te Katina robes must ave spent te wole tree monts in te monastery. Tey must also ave performed te invitation ceremony. Remember tat today you are offering Katina robes to te Sanga, and not to te monks individually. At oter times, you may offer robes to individual monk if you want to or you may offer te robes to two or tree monks as a group or you can offer to te Sanga. But tis time, you ave to offer to te Sanga. Wy do you ave to offer Katina robes to te Sanga? Katina is a formal act of Sanga, wic also involves te act of te individual. Tere are two activities involved in Katina. One is te act of Sanga - tat means a formal act tat is to be performed by te Sanga - not by one monk or two monks or tree monks. But, tere is anoter activity tat an individual monk must do. So tere are two activities involved in te act of Katina. Tat is wy you ave to offer te robe to te Sanga, not to a monk individually. After accepting te Katina continued on next page..

4 April 2003 Dammananda Newsletter continued from previous page.. robes you offer today, te Sanga will coose an individual monk to perform te Katina activity. Coosing a monk and giving im te robe to perform Katina on it must be done at a formal ceremony. Tat is te formal act of te Sanga. At first te Katina robes are of te property of te Sanga. Ten, by te formal act of te Sanga, an individual monk is cosen and given te robes for im to perform te Katina. Actually, te Katina is performed by an individual. But in order for tat individual monk to perform te Katina, e must ave te Katina robe. And te Katina robe must be given to im by te Sanga. Tat is wy you ave to offer te robe to te Sanga and not to te individual monk. Nowadays people offer readymade robes to te Sanga. So te Sanga do not ave to make te robes. But during te time of te Budda and maybe several centuries after tat, people offered not te ready-made robes, but material for robes; tat means pieces of clot. Wen tey offered pieces of clot as a Katina robe and after accepting it, ten te Sanga must make te robe. It must make te robe and finis making it in one day. So it must not go beyond te dawn of te next day. After accepting te material for robe, all monks in a monastery must elp or land a and in making te robe. You ave to cut te robe and ten make stitces and ten you ave to dye te robe. Dyeing is also not so easy. You ave to make te dye yourself and tere are no stores, were you buy te ready-made dye. Te dyes were mostly made from te bark of te trees or te inner core of te trees. And wen te robe is dyed, it will not get te necessary color te first time. So it as to be dyed a second time so tat it gets te necessary color. Wen tere is sun outside, it may not be problem. But if it is cloudy- overcast, it is a real problem to get te robe dry so tat it can be dyed again and ten made into te robe to perform te Katina ceremony on it. Nowadays we are very lucky because people offer ready-made robes. It tese were not ready-made robes, ten we would ave to do someting to turn tem into robes. All monks must elp to make te robe, some stitcing, some preparing to dye, and so on. Tere is a lot of work. Tat is wy, during te days of te Budda, people offered Katina robes not at tis time of day. Tey came early so tat monks got enoug time to make robes. Wen tey brougt material for robes, tey must also bring food for monks because on tat day monks may not be able to go out for alms round. Tey ave to do some work at te monastery, and so tey brougt food and oter tings required for te monks. Tere were lots of activities at te monastery on te Katina day. But nowadays people just come and offer robes, and te Sanga just accept te robes and tey perform te Katina ceremony. It is very convenient nowadays. Since Katina robes can be offered to te Sanga only once in a year, it is rare opportunity. And since it is rare to get te opportunity to offer Katina robes to te Sanga, offering of Katina robes is said to be of great merit. And also it is unique because it is tis offering of Katina robes only tat can give te recipient monks five oter benefits. If you do some offering - you offer meals to te monks or you offer robes to te individual monk and so on - you get merit. Wen you offer robes, tey get te robes, but noting else. But tis offering of Katina robes can give monks five benefits. Monks can obtain tese five benefits only troug te performance of Katina. If te monks do not perform te Katina, tey will not get tese five benefits. And tey can perform Katina only wen tey get Katina robes offered by lay people. So te offering of te Katina robes is a rare opportunity for lay people and also it is beneficial to monks in more tan one way. So tey get tese five benefits also; we may call tem 'Fringe Benefits.' Tese five benefits Sanga and all te monks will enjoy until te full moon of Marc. You may want to know wat tese five benefits are. Ten I must refer you to te Vinaya book. You can read te book, or you can ask a monk later. I will just give you a int. Monks ave to keep - you know ow many rules? 227 rules. You know - even to keep five percepts and to keep tem intact is not easy. So wen you ave to keep a undred rules, two undred rules or 227 rules, it is very difficult. Sometimes we wis tat we would be free from some rules. Tis offering of Katina, performance of Katina can give us tis wis. So it can give us freedom from four Vinaya rules temporarily or until full moon of Marc. Until tat time, we are free from four Vinaya rules. Ten tere is anoter benefit tat is to ave autority over te robes offered to te Sanga during tat time. Tat means wen te robes are offered to te Sanga, te Sanga will keep te robes. Wen tey get enoug robes to sare, to distribute, ten Sanga must distribute to individual monks. Wen tey distribute, tey must distribute to all monks present at tat time of distributing. Not only tose wo perform te Katina ceremony, but tere may be guest monks form oter monasteries or oter countries and if tey are ere at te time of distributing, tey also ave te rigt to a sare. If we are distributing ere, we must give tem one sare. If we ave performed te Katina, and we ave tese five benefits, we may keep te robes to ourselves only and we may not distribute to te guest monks. Tat is one autority over te distribution of te Sangika robes. So altogeter we get five benefits: freedom from four Vinaya rules and autority over te distribution of robes offered to te Sanga. So, isn't it good to offer to te Sanga? Yes. Wen you offer Katina robes, you virtually offer te five benefits. No oter act of DÈna can give tese five privileges to te receiving Sanga. Tat is wy, it is called a unique act of DÈna. A DÈna tat can also give five benefits or a special privilege to te recipients. So now you know tat Katina robes must be offered to te Sanga so tat Sanga can perform te Katina ceremony. Now tere is anoter reason. Wy you offer robes to te Sanga? Altoug it is not really connected to Continued on next page..

Dammananda Newsletter April continued from previous page.. te Katina, it is also noteworty. Tat is a teacing tat offering to te Sanga brings more abundant results tan offering to an individual. In order for your DÈna to bring more abundant results, you make DÈna to te Sanga. You may ave eard of Budda's aunt and step-moter or foster moter called MaÈ PajÈpatigotami. Se wanted to offer robes to te Budda. It is said in te book tat se spun te yarn erself, se wove te clot erself, and se made te robe erself. After se ad finised making, se offered a pair of robes, maybe two robes, to te Budda. Wen se offered to te Budda, saying "Tis is, like in tese days it may be said, as ome-made or andmade." Se said, "I spun te yarn myself. I wove te clot myself. I made te robe myself. Please accept tese robes." But Budda refused. Budda said, "Offer it to te Sanga. If you offer to te Sanga, I will also be virtually offered." Te second time, Gotami requested to te Budda to accept and te second time Budda refused. And te tird time again Budda refused. Now tere is Venerable Œnanda. Œnanda could not stay silent. So e intervened and ten said, "Bante, please accept te robes offered by Gotami because Gotami is very elpful to you. Wen your moter died, you are a cild seven days old. Se adopted you and se gave er own milk to you wile se assigned er own son to oter wet nurses. Se ad done a lot for you. So please accept te robes. And also you are beneficial to Gotami because troug your Damma talks, Gotami ad become a SotÈpanna." He pleaded like tat wit te Budda. And ten Budda talked about oter tings. Wat is not satisfactory about te story is tat it ended it ten and tere. We do not know weter Gotami offered te robes to te Sanga or to te Budda. We may say tat Gotami offered te robes to te Sanga. Wy did Budda tell Gotami to offer te robes not to Himself but to te Sanga? One answer is tat Budda wanted Gotami to get more merit. If se offers to te Budda, ten se gets one merit. If se offers to te Sanga including te Budda, se gets more merit. In order for Gotami to get more merit, Budda said, "Offer it to te Sanga. Wen Budda said, "Offer te robes to te Sanga. If you offer te robes to te Sanga, I will also be onored." Tis statement left us wit one problem. Was te Budda included in te Sanga? Or was He different or separate? Can we put Budda in Sanga? Or is Budda separate? Wen you took precepts, wat did you say? BuddaÑ saraóañ gaccèmi. DammaÑ saraóañ gaccèmi. And SangaÑ saraóañ gaccèmi. If Budda were included in te Sanga, tere would be only two refuges for you. Tere would be two gems in Buddism. So Budda is different or separate from te Sanga. Tat is okay. Now tere is anoter question. Wy did Budda tell Gotami to offer to te Sanga? A little later after teacing Œnanda about some kinds of DÈna, Budda said, "On no account do I say tat offering to an individual brings more abundant results tan offering to te Sanga." If we take tat statement seriously, ten it may mean offering to te Sanga is better tan offering to te Budda. Because if we offer to te Budda, it is Budda as an individual we offer to. But in tis case te commentary says, "Budda was te best of tose wo are recipients of te Dana. So offering to te Budda is more beneficial. But following tat statement of te Budda, I tink we can say tat offering to te Sanga is also of great benefit. In many oter places, in many cases Budda talked tat te offering made to te Sanga brings muc results. Wenever we can, we are to make offering to te Sanga. Because wen we make offering to an individual, we ave to attend to some oter ting. Wen you plant a tree, you will plant a tree in te soil tat is ric - good soil so tat te tree can grow and big and so on. So te soil sould be free from blemises, te soil sould be free from tras and it must be ric so tat it can give abandon fruits. Wen you plant a fruit tree, you will coose te soil were you will plant te trees. In te same way, wen you do a DÈna, you need to coose te recipient of te DÈna. Te more virtuous recipient is, te more abundant results you get as a result of tat DÈna. An individual is never sure. You may be very pleased wit one individual, you ave muc fait to tat individual. As we say, you cannot go into is Damma, and see wat e really is. So tere is possibility tat e migt not be really pure or someting like tat. But as te Sanga, because Sanga means te wole community tere can be non-virtuous Sanga. Because we cannot say te wole Sanga is not virtuous. Tere are many members of te Sanga: some are virtuous, oter non-virtuous. But as a wole, tere is no suc ting as nonvirtuous Sanga. Tat is wy, te offering made to te Sanga brings more abundant results tan to an individual. Today also you will get to offer te Katina robes to te Sanga. So you can be mindful of tat too wen you offer te robes. Now you offer to te Sanga, and as a Sanga is pure. Sanga means te community of monks beginning wit Venerable Sariputta and Moggalana and so on until today. Tere can be no unvirtuous Sanga, no impure Sanga. And so te offering made to tat pure Sanga will bring abundant results. Tat is wy also, you offer to te Sanga. But te main ting is tat Katina robes are offered to te Sanga, so tat Katina ceremony can be performed by te Sanga. Along wit it, you sould understand tat offering to te Sanga brings more abundant results tan offering to an individual. So, you will offer to te Sanga wit tis understanding in your mind, so tat te Sanga will be able to perform te Katina ceremony, and te monks can get te five benefits. Also, your offering or your DÈna will bring more abundant results. I believe tat you are not convinced tat offering made to te Sanga is better tan offering made to an individual. Suppose you want to make an offering to te Sanga. And, suppose tere is only one monk at te monastery. How would you do it? You want Continued on page 15..

8 April 2003 Dammananda Newsletter Loving Kindness and Saring of Merits A talk given at te Catedral of St. Mary, San Francisco on September 11, 2002 By Sayadaw U Silanandabivamsa We are assembled ere today to do someting tat is beneficial to all mankind and to tose wo perised in te attack on September 11 last year and wo are left orpans and so on. Te world needs to be peaceful in order to avoid suc violence. Every religion as someting to offer for tis purpose. I would like to tell you wat Buddism as to offer. Buddism teaces, among oter tings, loving kindness (metta) to all beings to make te society peaceful. If everybody could follow Budda s simple but effective advice, te world would be a very peaceful place to live in. Buddist loving kindness is a genuine desire for all beings including our enemies to be appy. First, we sould pervade ourselves wit loving kindness, and wis for our ealt, appiness and peacefulness. Tat is not selfisness, because if we are not peaceful ourselves ow can we send tougts of loving kindness to oter people? So we begin wit wising loving kindness for ourselves, and ten we send out tougts of loving kindness to oter people: to te dear ones, suc as one's parents, relatives and oters; to tose wo are neutral, or wo are neiter friends nor enemies; and to tose wom we ate and tose wo ate us. Ultimately we will send loving kindness to all beings in general. Buddist loving kindness includes sending tougts to our enemies and wis tat tey be well, appy and peaceful. In fact wen tey are appy and peaceful, tey will do no arm to anybody. By sending loving kindness tougts to tose wo ate us and wom we ate, we are virtually turning tem into good persons; we are transforming tem into responsible citizens. Te result of sending loving kindness tougts is tat first we ourselves are peaceful. Ten oter people wo get our loving kindness temselves will be peaceful too. Wen tey are peaceful, tey will not do any arm to anybody. It is important tat every individual must be involved in tis sending of tougts, everybody must send to everybody. And if everybody is peaceful, we need not boter about Would Peace, because if everybody is peaceful and tranquil, peace prevails in te world. And we must do it not just once, not just at tis ceremony, but at ome, at scool and wenever you ave te cance to do it. If you do it tis way, you will soon notice te difference te way people beave toward you wit loving kindness. I would like you to follow me in sending loving kindness to beings. We will read togeter te sentences from te andout. Wen you say tem, do so wit your mind totally occupied wit wising ealt, appiness and peacefulness. And ten we will do someting for tose wo perised in te attack [on September 11, 2001] and wo are left beind widows, widowers, orpans and so on. Te only way we can elp te departed ones is to do some meritorious deeds ere and sare merits wit tem. So we first make donations to te fund for relief of tose people. Our donations will benefit tose wo are left beind. And ten we will sare merits wit tose wo perised in te attack and ten to tose wo are left beind. And ten lastly we will sare wit all oter beings. Let us say it togeter. Loving kindness May I be well, appy and peaceful. May my dear ones be well, appy and peaceful. May te neutral ones be well, appy and peaceful. May tose wom we ate and wo ate us be well, appy and peaceful. May all beings be well, appy and peaceful. May peace prevail in te world. Saring of Merits May all tose wo perised in te attack sare tese merits, For te acquisition of all kinds of appiness. May all tose wo are left beind sare tese merits, For te acquisition of all kinds of appiness May all oter beings togeter wit te deities sare tese merits, For te acquisition of all kinds of appiness.

Dammananda Newsletter April continued from page 1 (President's Corner).. from te bottom of my eart. Witout teir elp, encouragement, coordination, team-work, and a sense of camaraderie, acieving a fraction of te goals is unimaginable. I would like to express my eartfelt tanks to all our Damma friends, wo ave given us unfailing support and invaluable advice. I am very grateful to all te generous donors wo ave contributed money and kind -- large and small -- towards te reconstruction of te Dammananda Viara Monastery and Meditation Center and for te propagation of Teravada Buddism in te Americas and beyond. I am extremely deligted and tankful to see donations pouring in at record levels despite te slowing US and global economy. Sadu! Sadu! Sadu! As we reflect on te past two years (of te current term), we see several successes as well as temporary failures. For every roadblock we encountered, we ave tried our best to analyze te root cause(s), take remedial actions, and also ensure tat suc mistakes or ardsips will not be repeated in te future. I truly ope tat our Damma friends will understand our cetana and metta and will forgive our unintentional mistakes. During my tenure, TBSA as overcome several major obstacles and as reaced important milestones. Damma Friends can now rejoice and enjoy te majestic view of te new Meditation Center building rising ig above te panoramic landscape. Tis would not ave been possible witout te following. First, te young volunteers in te "Ponya Kusala" group, eaded by U Tun Lin and U Ye Sint, sacrificed teir precious weekends for several monts of ard labor in cleaning and fixing up te new Dammananda Viara compound during te move from Daly City to Half Moon Bay. Next, we were blessed to ave U Ricard Swe, a devotee of Sayadaw U Silananda, to give some of is services voluntarily for te Monastery Construction project. Finally, we received numerous donors and pledges. Tis year, a record number of youts 45 to be exact -- passed te Aye-Tet scolarsip Buddist examination, now in its tent year. Tis is a significant step in passing te damma torc to te next generation. Tis as been made possible by te foundation laid down by te generosity of Burmese pilantropists and devotees of Sayadaw U Silananda Dr. Lynn Swe Aye and Dr. Kin Nyo Tet. Te acievements are due in great measure to Sayadaw U Silananda and all Dammananda Sayadaws, wo place empasis on pariyatti, patipatti, and pariveda. Tey ave given us and continue to give us wisdom, insigt, and guidance. Earlier tis year, we were alarmed wen Sayadaw U Silananda suffered a mild stroke, but we can now rejoice to know tat Sayadaw as recovered completely to carry on is Damma Duta missions. Recently, we ad a 75 t birtday Pu Zaw Pwe for Sayadaw U Silananda. In addition to te pysical Pu Zaw Pwe, te attendees were given a Damma dana book "First Sermon", a reprint of Sayadaw's early exposition of te Dammacakka. Te book also contains Sayadaw's biograpy in Myanmar and Englis. My sincere appreciation goes to te doctors and nurses, wo took special care of Sayadaw U Silananda during is illness, and to all te friends, devotees and well wisers -- near and far -- wo expressed teir concerns about Sayadaw s ealt and teir kind wises for Sayadaw s longevity. I am also grateful to Tatagata Meditation Center (TMC) for providing comfortable accommodations for Sayadaw U Silananda from te beginning of te reconstruction of Dammananda Viara until today. Tere are numerous unsung eroes. Te members of te Mettaviari group ave canted parittas and suttas at every TBSA festival witout fail. Te culinary group of TBSA led by Daw Yi Yi Tein, Daw Hla Hla Win, and Daw Tin Tin Win as prepared delicious and autentic Burmese food for every event. Auntie Daw Tan Kyi and Sayalay Ma Sukakami deserve special tanks for teir tireless work and teir loving kindness in caring for Sayadaws. I would also like to express my gratitude to all te volunteers young and old for teir immeasurable elp over te years. Last, but not least, I wis to tender my eartfelt acknowledgement to te Dammananda Newsletter team (wic also doubles as te TBSA web team) for teir dedication, and ard work to prepare te news and articles in time for our Damma friends. In conclusion, I would like to encourage readers, wo wis to elp propagate te sasana in general and TBSA activities in particular, to serve on te next Board of Directors. We request tem to give teir names to te Venerable Sayadaws as candidates as soon as possible. May you all ave a appy, ealty, and prosperous New Year. Sabbe Satta Sukita Hontu. Wit boundless metta, Myat Htoo

12 April 2003 Dammananda Newsletter

Dammananda Newsletter April

14 April 2003 Dammananda Newsletter continued from page 1 (Birtday).. ter four days [of treatment], I was discarged from te ospital. Altoug I ad a stroke, I believe noting serious appened. One side of te face [ceek] looked sligtly distorted [disoriented] for a wile. It s now back to normal. However, after tat, tere were irregularities in my blood pressure. It swung up and down, and for quite some time, I did not feel cool and calm. Now, my blood pressure as stabilized for a wile; it s back to normal, also. During tat time, [due to side effect of te medication] I suffered some depression. I faced some difficulties during tat depression period. Now, it as also gone away. During tose times, wat tougts came to my mind? I pondered about old age. I pondered about sickness. In tis age, 75 years is considered quite old. As one becomes old, one appears to lose congruity, armony, and balance. One feels bodily ailments past 60. Wen you re over 70 and turn 75, it s worse. I remembered reading tis story [in te scriptures]. King Korbya told Venerable Rattapala, I am now 80 years old. Wen I take a step, I land up in a spot different from te one tat I ad intended. Tings like tat are appening. In fact, I ad read tat story a long time back, but at tat time I could not and did not relate te events [since I ad good ealt] and did not pay muc attention to te meaning. Now, I can relate it wit own experience. Tere are times wen I take a step, I land up in a spot different from te one tat I ad intended. Tose are signs of old age. Ten, tere s some loss of memory. Tat is due partly to old age, and partly due to te mild stroke. Some words do not come out easily out of my mout [in te midst of a talk]. Wat is tat [one suffers] after old age? Sickness. No one can evade sickness [totally]. No matter ow muc one takes care of oneself, one can still fall sick [witout advance notice]. I tried my best to take care of my ealt [and take medication prescribed by my pysicians]. I did not know wy I ad a stroke. May be, because of te ig blood pressure. May be, some oter factors tat I don t know. Well, we can also say tat disease [or ailment] can [seemingly] appear at will. So, I also pondered about sickness. No one can avoid old age and sickness. No beings can avoid tese two natural penomena. All of you, te devotees listening to tis damma talk, ave noticed some degree of old age. Some people believe tat one gets old only wen one reaces a certain age, say 50 or 60. Tat s not true. According to Abidamma, all moments starting from te conception in te moter s womb are moments of aging. Wen we were young, we used to say tat we are growing up. Tat, in reality, is gradual aging. Aging is a natural penomenon tat no being can avoid. So, can you also avoid aging? You cannot. Plastic surgery is quite popular as a means of making people look better and younger. Plastic surgery may be able to make your old body [and face] better looking, but can it really prevent te natural penomenon of aging? It s not possible. As one lay on te operating table [or cair] for plastic surgery, one is in fact aging [even momentarily]. It is important for one to tink about aging. Wat if one fails to tink of aging? One migt feel augty and proud [say of one s youtful appearance]. To prevent suc [false] pride, one sould ponder about aging. Aging is akin to firing a sot tat no one can evade. Sickness is also a no-miss sot aimed at all beings. One can look after one s ealt, and even claim tat one is ealty. Te natural penomenon of sickness still exists for all beings. So, one sould contemplate seriously about bot aging and sickness. Ten, [false] pride of yout and good ealt will lessen and eventually go away. After sickness, wat else? [Every one will face] deat, for sure. No one knows for sure wen one will die, but it s true tat every one is getting closer to deat [wit eac passing moment]. Traditionally, people say tat old people are closer to deat, and young people are farter from deat. Really, tat s not true. Age young or old -- does not matter for dying. Some die wen tey are young. Some die wen tey are old. So, one sould ponder tat since every one is bound to die one day, one sould always be aware of te natural penomenon of deat. Wy is tat important? After one dies, one will be reborn. Unless one attains araantsip in tis very life, one is sure to be reborn [and ave a new life]. In te subsequent lives, do you want to be reborn in te good [abodes/planes of existence], or do you want to be reborn in te woeful states? In oter words, do you want to ave good future lives? Naturally, you would want to be reborn in a good abode. No one wants to be reborn in te woeful states. But, weter you are reborn or not in a good abode depends on your actions, your kamma. Have you performed good actions, or bad actions? Please tink [and answer] carefully. If you ave done good deeds, you will generally be reborn in te good abodes; tat s a [logical] conclusion. If you ave done bad deeds, you are bound to be reborn in te woeful states. Wen someone says, I m afraid of dying, it really means, I m afraid of being reborn in a woeful state. So, wat sould you do to ensure tat you will be reborn in a good abode and not te woeful states? From tis moment, one sould plan and perform as many meritorious deeds as possible. If you accumulate Continued on next page..

Dammananda Newsletter April continued from previous page.. te kusalas, te potential and momentum of te kusalas can propel you to be reborn in te good abodes; tat s wat we believe. You sould practice wat te late [Tipitakadara] Mingun Sayadaw preaced: Rigt now from tis moment, before we age, let s do te meritorious deeds. Rigt now from tis moment, before we get sick, let s do te meritorious deeds. Rigt now from tis moment, before we die, let s do te meritorious deeds. Tat s wy it s important to perform meritorious deeds diligently. Wen we say accumulate kusalas, one sould not tink only about doing grand deeds. Seemingly small good deeds tat you perform daily also constitute kusala. It is muc more important to do suc daily kusala acts rigtly and consistently. Say your prayers in front of a Budda s statue, recite te parittas (protective verses), practice vipassana (insigt) meditation, and so on. If you do tose acts daily, you will be assured of a good next life. Just staying status quo will not guarantee of a good next life. It is important to realize te natural penomenon of dying; it s muc more important to make sure tat you will be reborn in a good abode after deat. Only if you continuously contemplate on te nature of aging, sickness, and deat, will te [false] pride decay and you will accumulate lots of kusala. Isn t it true tat birtday is considered a appy event [a time to be appy.]. Wen one gets birtday presents, one feels appy. In a sense, it s true. But, on one s birtday, it is important for one to also tink tis way, I was born. I will grow old. I will get sick. Eventually, I will die. Before I get old, before I get sick, before I die, I am resolved to accumulate meritorious deeds as muc as possible. And, one sould also keep te resolution. Ten, one is assured of a good abode [after deat]. So, on tis 75 t birtday celebration, let us contemplate on te nature of old age, sickness, and deat, and as in te verses we mentioned a wile ago, Rigt now from tis moment, before we age, let s do te meritorious deeds. Rigt now from tis moment, before we get sick, let s do te meritorious deeds. Rigt now from tis moment, before we die, let s do te meritorious deeds. try to do and accumulate meritorious deeds before we get old, before we get sick, and before we die. If you practice tat way, tere is a ig cance tat you will be reborn in a good abode. So, all tose wo are ere for te celebration sould tink deeply about tis damma talk and practice accordingly. I urge you not forget to prepare to accumulate kusala -- your personal possessions. Wit tis simple rejoinder, I conclude tis damma talk. continued from page 5 (Katina Robes Offering).. to make offering to te Sanga, but tere is only one monk, so it seems tat tere is no Sanga at te monastery. But you can still make offering to te Sanga to tat one person. Have in mind te wole Sanga, not tat particular individual. You may be offering to tat individual, you may be anding te offerings to tat individual, but in your mind, ave te wole of Sanga. Imagine tat you are offering to te wole community of monks and tis person is just a representative of te wole community. In tat way, even if you make offering to one monk, you make offering to te wole Sanga. Your DÈna is to te Sanga altoug it is to just one individual you offer. After tat, tat monk because e is alone and it is offered to te Sanga, e is entitled to make use of tat because e is a member of te Sanga. And so e is entitled to use te offering. Tat is is concern, and not your concern. Your concern is you ave offered your offering to te Sanga, and you get te merit of offering to te Sanga. So your offering or your DÈna will bring abundant results. Even toug tere is only one monk or two, tree monks, you can still make offering to te Sanga. It is always good to ave te Sanga in mind wen you offer someting to te Sanga or to te monks. Suppose you offer meals to te monks, ten you may say, "I offer te meal to te Sanga" or someting like tat. So today wit tis understanding, you will offer Katina robes to te Sanga. Te Enligtened Budda He taugt us te way to escape te weel Sowed us te pat to break te circle Te middle pat, it was called. Special Request to TBSA donors Even toug te new Dammananda Viara monastery is complete, te County of San Mateo will not allow te Sayadaws to reside permanently in te new building until te following requirements are completed. (a) construct a left-turn lane on te Cabrillo Higway (Hwy 1) to ensure tat te visitors to te monastery can safely enter/exit, (b) install water storage tank/pumps to meet te firefigting guidelines, and (c) landscaping inside TBSA property since te monastery resides in te "Scenic Route". Te devotees will be glad to ear tat we ave secured permits for bot igway widening and water storage tank/pumps, and te construction can go aead as budget permits. Landscaping does not need a separate permit. We would like to finis tese projects as soon as possible (preferably before Waso, start of te Buddist Lent) so tat Sayadaws can relocate to te new building and conduct te sasana activities comfortably and effectively. At tis time of writing, we are about $50,000 sort of funds to complete all tese requirements. We would like to make a special request to past, present, and would be donors to support TBSA and elp Sayadaws in te propagation of sasana work in te Bay Area and beyond.
