Milan began his talk by letting us know he is originally from the former Yugoslavia. His dad was a mining engineer and his mom was a piano teacher and he enjoyed playing classical guitar. He explained that in his country, with a good government job, citizens were given free housing, health and education, as well as travel. With his dad s position, he and his mom traveled extensively through Europe while he was growing up In 1989 Milan graduated from university with a degree in mining engineer, and in 1990 he married Almira, a doctor. Like any newlyweds they were looking forward to raising a family and living a comfortable life. However, in 1991 Civil War broke out and Milan was drafted into the army, spending time on the front lines. One year into the war his in-laws were forced to leave their home as they were Bosnian. Once Milan was out of the army he and Almira moved to Montenegro and applied to come to Canada. After one year their application was approved and on June 22, 1992, Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

He had requested that he be near a mine, so he thought he was opening a mine in Medicine Hat. Milan worked various jobs after arriving in Canada and he found out there were tricks to the English language. At one job he held, he was a furniture stripper and when people asked what he did, he would reply, I am a stripper and he could not understand why people were laughing. Milan is still discovering the idiosyncrasies of the English language. In 1996 Milan and Almira welcomed a son who is their pride and joy and in 1997 they became Canadian Citizens. Milan explained he enjoys, reading travel, classical music, soccer and basketball. He is also fiercely proud of the fact he is Montenegrin and will happily educate you on the history of his beautiful country. Milan currently works at Community Employment Services as a job developer, which provides him with the satisfaction of knowing he is helping those with disabilities find suitable employment in our community. Milan showed us the beautiful Montenegro flag as well as his family tree, which only lists the males as they are the ones who carry on the family name. Welcome Milan! Acting President Mary Lou Hansen Presidents Remarks: Acting President Mary Lou Hansen thanked members for their generosity in bringing dry goods to the Oct 6th meeting. All items were greatly appreciated by the Women s Shelter. Acting President Mary Lou asked Mike Christie to come up and speak to the Club elections. Mike explained there are vacant positions for directors. On Oct 29th at the Cypress Club, the past president will be forming a nominating committee to consider eligible people. To be eligible you have to have held a club position for at least two years. Any interested parties can contact Mike. The election will take place on Dec 1. Exchange Student Report: Mikiko Hoshi made great progress today giving her first report alone at the podium! By all accounts Mikiko had a busy week that Mikiko Hoshi Is it the truth? 3 included a visit to St. Michaels school to teach the grade 4 5 kids origami, as well as dinner at the Cypress Club. She celebrated Thanksgiving with 33 people where she enjoyed the turkey and apple pie, but the pumpkin pie was not a favorite. On Oct 4 she turned 17 and celebrated by feasting on Thai food and getting her ears pierced; with the permission of her mom. She rounded out her week by taking in the Tina Turner concert at the Esplanade. Whew, that was on busy week Mikiko! Maeghan Jerry s blog. Jayden Lloyd blog Minute Matters Dick Bide sold 14 golf shirts at a little less than $55 each and made a profit of $ Brian Rathwell said the dinner club is late starting and is looking for one of the club members to have a dinner. They can contact Gwen. Dave Stalwick requires volunteers for Oct 21 Bingo. Jeff MacFarlane is looking for a Treasurer for the Music Festival. Mary Lou Hansen reminded us that this week was small business week with the Mayors breakfast taking place on Oct 21. The Women in Business Wine and Cheese is Oct 22 at the Esplanade. Both tickets available at Community Futures Entre Corp. The small business awards take place on Oct 23rd and tickets are available through the Chamber of Commerce. Did you say the Ghost of Rotary? $gt.-at-arms - Paul Heywood Sgt. Paul began with a $2 fine to Mary Lou Hansen for saying the greeter was the Ghost or Rotary. Uwe Krickhahn was fined for saying Elvira Smid s jacket looked like it was made out of shopping bags! Sgt Paul said it was a lovely jacket. Adolf Seiler was fined $2 for spending to much time in the city of Florence. Dick Bide was fined $2 for the hefty profit on the golf shirts. Jeff MacFarlane was fined $2 for lowering the bar by accepting any Rotarian for the Music Festival Committee. Mary Lou Hansen was fined, yet again, for charging for the Mayors Breakfast, but not for the Women in Business Wine and Cheese. Ron Learmont was fined for winning the gloves in the Club Auction. Sgt. Paul said that if the gloves didn t fit, he would get them. The gloves didn t fit. You re fining me how much? Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? 4 Happy $s were kicked off when Nadia Deneen said she was happy for losing 12 pounds in Food Addicts Anonymous. Terry Brekko and Mike Hertz are happy that Angus is back at work. Terry wanted to know if it was management that caused the bleeding ulcer. Mike retorted by saying it might be, as the editor recently ruptured her appendix and is off work! Khrista Vogt is happy to be nominated for a New Business of the Year award. Garth Vallely was happy as he and Mary Anne celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Jim Solomon gave a happy $5 for the great time he had in Fairmont. Dave Stalwick is happy that it has been 20 years since he agreed to a bet to quit smoking, and won!
