In 2006, his father, U.S. investor and philanthropist Warren Buffett challenged him to do something great in the world and gave him $1 billion to do it. So he gave himself 40 years to spend every penny in a bold attempt to end global hunger. After a second stock gift in 2012 and favorable returns, he has about $3 billion now. An Illinois farmer, Buffett spends part of the year in the cab of his tractor and the rest of his time leading the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. He's barreled headfirst into his task, visiting more than 100 countries to research the scope of the issue. So far, his work has funded research into drought-tolerant crops, supported the mapping of food insecurity in America, and will pull nearly 50,000 Central American farmers out of poverty. Nearly 60 percent of the hunger in Africa is caused by conflict. Howard Buffett

Kim welcomes Past Sunrise President and Parksville Rotarian Matt Breedlove; and visiting Rotarian, Lantzville Rotary Club President Glenn Currie was here to tell us some things happening with his club. 3 Rotary Moment Blake expanded on the WHO press release identifying a global health warning concerning a disturbing increase in Polio cases within countries in crisis. Doug had his President Elect hat on as he shared concepts on membership and on member s participation in Rotary club events. Doug the editors perception is that our club does much better than the 20%/80% statistics you quoted; we don t all do everything but each of us does something. Birthdays & Anniversaries Allen and Marjory are celebrating an Anniversary May 15th; Ed celebrates a Birthday May 16th; Garnet and Shirley Millar celebrate their Anniversary May 19th. 4 Announcements Matt Breedlove shared information about Parksville Rotary Clubs upcoming presentation of their Mosaic Youth Talent Show. The show, scheduled for Friday May 16th, will showcase over 17 talented young local performers and will feature Erik Gow as MC with a special performance by Beth Marie Anderson. Show time is 7 pm for this Must See special event. Vocational Director Bob presented a cheque for $3,000 to KSS Principal Jesse Whittie. The money will provide four $750 Awards to graduating Trades and Technology students at KSS. The time is fast approaching for the arrival June 1 of our Rotary Friendship Exchange visitors from District 7820 in the Maritimes. Ron and his Committee have put together an interesting 3-day program that will give our visitors a great Island experience. Ron is encouraging Sunrise members to plan to participate in one or more of the scheduled events. RFE s are truly one of the highlights of membership[ in Rotary. 5 Community Service Director Mike had 2 announcements: The first that the years final sweat equity club event will be on Thursday May 15th to continue our war on Broom, which of course is now in bloom and ready for eradication. Meet at the Dog Walk Park, Bennett Road, 9 am Secondly the Committee meeting at this mornings club Assembly is proposing that next Rotary year members will be encouraged to donate an item each month with the items going to the Manna Society. Lantzville Rotary Club President Glenn Currie challenged Sunrise Golfers to enter a team in their Golf Tournament scheduled for Friday June 6th at Fairwinds. One of the features of their event is the Helicopter Golf Drop. Tickets can be purchased from any Lantzville Rotarian. I never said most of the things I said Yogi Berra
