I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you all were able to enjoy a long, relaxing weekend. The big news this week--whether we wanted to hear it or not--president Rob had a kidney stone. Apparently, he had been suffering with one for several days leading up to the meeting. He announced that if he passed out from pain that I would finish running the meeting for him. Then, Nick Verina mentioned that he had been caring for Rob during his time of great suffering, which made

Rotary Motto Service Above Self 4-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Avenues of Service Club Service Vocational Service Community Service International Service Youth Service us all wonder just what that might entail. Whatever it is, I m sure it s not in his job description. While I cannot help him with this particular problem, I can offer these words of comfort.this, too, shall pass! Our friends from Warren Kiwanis joined us for our traditional meeting-before- Thanksgiving gathering. It was wonderful to see them and Rob did his best to get them all to fill out Rotary membership applications. It didn t work, but you can t say he didn t try. John Robertson filled in on Fellowship for Julia Wetstein and reminded us to give thanks, not just on Thanksgiving, but every day for all that we have. We are truly very blessed and should remember that. We also had Bob Wolleben back in town for our meeting. As many know, he has been working in Illinois for the past few months. He announced that he will be with us for the next few weeks and then will be moving to Illinois permanently. We will be so sorry to see him leave. He has been a wonderful Rotarian and made a real difference in our community. We, of course, wish him the very best. Our guests this week included Helen Verina; Matthew, Gretchen and Kurt Sauer; Nathaniel Bellow; Robbie Shape; Sterling Williams (who looked especially sharp in his bowtie and black suit); and, of course, our Kiwanian friends. Makeups One makeup: Royster, Bauman, Verina, Wetstein, Straniak, May, Smith, Ditch, Iannucci, Bollas, Thompson, Shape, Stephenson, Ealy, LaPolla, Patton, and Robertson. Two makeups: Berk, Oblinger, D. Sauer. Children s Christmas Party The Christmas Party for the children from Children s Rehab will be on Wednesday, December 10 th. For the benefit of our new members, this is not a normal club meeting. It is designed as a fun event for the children from Children s Rehab and their families. Rotarians are urged to attend, enjoy the music, and spend a relaxing hour with other members in the club. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. with the children arriving between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Lunch will be served at 12:15 and consist of the children s favorite foods. Santa will be flying in to distribute gifts and Mayor Franklin will join us to celebrate the day. The Rotary Wheels will also be providing music for the enjoyment of all. Weekly Speakers Mike Bollas is asking the membership to contact him if they have any program ideas for our meetings starting in January. Please contact him if you do. John Robertson s Christmas Party John extended an invitation to all Warren Rotarians, and even our Kiwanian guests, to attend his annual Christmas party at his home on December 13 th beginning at 5:00 p.m. Libations and food will be provided in appropriate quantities. Chocolate Festival Mike Bollas announced that the Chocolate Festival should net the Foundation $11,700 this year. This is the most we have ever raised!!! If anyone still has ticket money to turn in, we will still accept it.

The Object of Rotary The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: First, the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; Second, high ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third, the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian s personal, business and community life; Fourth, the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Every Rotarian Every Year September is the kickoff of this year s EREY Campaign. Between now and June 30, members are asked to donate $100 to Rotary International to support its humanitarian efforts. Members can donate $10 per month, add $50 to their December and July dues, or pay the entire amount at one time. We accept cash, check or credit card. See Cheryl Oblinger regarding your plans to participate in this Campaign. Your donations are completely tax deductible. Slice of the Valley Our Trumbull Pizza Challenge has been officially renamed the Slice of the Valley. It will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the Eastwood Expo Center. Tickets are $10 per person; those under 6 years pay $5. Price includes pizza and salad. We will have a DJ, big screen TVs for watching any games that may be playing, and much more. Attendees will vote on their favorite pizza and the top three given cash prizes. A trophy will also be presented to the first place winner. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR THIS COMMITTEE. PLEASE SEE ROB BERK IF YOU CAN HELP. Share the following link with friends and family to invite them to this event: Rotary On the Road Again Warren Rotary will hold its January 7 th meeting on the campus of Kent State Trumbull. It will be held in the student union located on the ground floor of the Classroom/Administration Building (look for the clock tower). AVI Food Systems will be providing box lunches for $8 per person and will include a sandwich, pretzels, fruit, cookie and water. You must sign up if you plan to eat lunch. PLEASE NOTE: If you sign up for the lunch and do not attend without notification, you will still be required to pay for your lunch. Your lunch choices are ham, turkey, or veggie sandwiches. Sign-up sheets will be available at upcoming meetings. If you don t sign up at a meeting, you will need to contact Dave Smith at or at dsmit134@kent.edu.

New Member Inducted Today Rotary Code of Conduct As a Rotarian, I will: Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of live in my community. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship. President Rob was proud to induct another new Rotarian this week. Asha Kumar-Gregory is with Renn Insurance Agency, just having earned her insurance license in July. She was born and raised in Howland, lived for 12 years in Missouri, and returned to the area about five years ago. We are delighted to welcome her as the newest member of our Rotary family and look forward to getting to know her better over the coming months. Paul Harris Fellows #215 and #216 Dallas Woodall presented two new Paul Harris Fellowships today to Nicholas Verina and Diane Sauer s daughter, Gretchen. Nick Verina served as Club President in and has been faithful and diligent in his support of the RI Foundation. Through his donation of $1,000 more than 1,600 children could be vaccinated against polio or a community in a developing country could build a well so that they have clean, drinkable water. His wife, Helen, joined him as he was presented with the pin and certificate so naming him a Paul Harris Fellow. Gretchen Sauer was presented with her Fellowship with her mother, father, brother, and fiancée beside her. Gretchen joins a long line of Sauers who have supported the RI Foundation starting with her great-grandfather Harry in The contribution made in her name by her mother, Diane, could be used to improve sanitation in a third-world country or even provide sewing machines to women in India so they could make and sell their own clothing, providing them with the financial security they and their families desperately need. Our heartfelt congratulations go out to both Gretchen and Nick on their joining the ranks of Paul Harris Fellows. We couldn t be more proud. 911 Emergency Michelle Martin, a dispatch trainer for 911, was our speaker and shared information on the role and responsibility of dispatchers in an emergency. Michelle graduated from the police academy in 1996 and worked security at WCI for a number of years. In 1999, she became a Trumbull County dispatcher and later a dispatcher with Warren Police Department. She

is now working as a supervisor at the new Racino, but still trains new dispatchers. Areas of Focus Promoting peace Fighting disease Providing clean water Saving mothers and children Supporting education Growing local economies Club Officers President Rob Berk President Elect Mike Bollas Vice President Julia Wetstein Secretary- Treasurer Cheryl Oblinger Past President John Campolito Board Members Jim Ditch Tony Iannucci Denise May Paul Pal Dave Smith Kim Straniak Nick Verina The actions of a dispatcher can often make a difference between life and death following an emergency. They serve as the link between those experiencing an emergency and the first responders. People often ask why dispatchers have to ask so many questions over the phone instead of just sending help. Each question they ask is critical to ensuring that the proper response is given. These questions help them determine the exact location of the emergency, the safety of the caller and responders, and the need for pre-arrival instructions (such as CPR, etc). They also maintain communications with the caller as long as it is safe to do so. By controlling the flow of information between the caller and the responder, dispatchers are able to make sure that the correct emergency response is rendered. She described some of the more notable emergencies in which she served as the dispatcher and, while she was able to maintain her composure during the emergency, finds she still gets emotional when she remembers the outcome of some of those calls. Members recognized the difficulty and complexity of the dispatcher s job and complimented Michelle for appearing to have the demeanor that makes her an exceptional dispatcher. We thank her for joining us and sharing such important information. Quote of the Week In remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941): It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived. -George S.
