1 First Metaphysical Church December 2015 Newsletter I love the holiday season!! The bright lights on Christmas trees, the happy carols, the decorations where ever you go. And let s not forget all the food! I was raised on a Christmas tree farm, so this was always a very busy but very happy time for my family. Almost everyone was in a festive mood, picking out the perfect tree. The kids are so excited; I've been asked so many times, "When are we putting the tree up?"". The very best reason I enjoy this season is the love we send out to our family, friends, church, and even people we pass on the street. We make a special effort to give to folks who could really use it, even leaving out treats for the birds and other wildlife. This is a wonderful time to invite people who are alone to share in our fun! Our Christmas/Yule party will be on the last Sunday before Christmas with a dollar store gift for a gift exchange, potluck, games, and crafts for the kids, and a visit from Santa! Service that night will be candle light caroling, which is always fun. So let your heart light shine and have a wonderful holiday season! I love you all so much, Rev. Connie Thank You! Wow I can hardly believe that it s the last month of the year already! We have had an amazing and productive year again this year. As usual we started off 2015 with our New Year s Party, we continued the New Year by creating Vision Boards, and Meditation, Pot Luck and Drumming. We had a wonderful year of classes, events and fairs that raised a significant amount of money for our Church! We have such an amazing Board of Directors that carried out the business of the Church and a wide variety of people were called to share their Spiritual Experiences both at the podium on Sunday and by teaching classes. Our Psychic Fairs continue to be a success and we are continuing to grow and attract new vendors, readers and customers (and many come back to Church service on Sunday). We have again had an amazing year

2 of events and fund raisers that not only raised money for the Church but was a lot of fun as well! We have a lot of new things going on as well; we have a new website, we can now take credit cards (not only for the Fairs and Events, but for donations too), and our Minister s Candidates are on the last leg of their training! We have new tables in Harmony Hall and our parking lot and Church got a little TLC on the outside. Thank you all who helped to make our Church Community so cohesive and productive; we couldn t do it without ALL of you! And a special Thank You to all of you who sent healing, well wishes and prayers for me the last few months as I went through a health challenge; I am on the mend and will be back in the saddle again! Remember that voting is coming up next month to choose a new Board of Directors. I am grateful to our current Board and all the dedication and hard work they put in this past year to keep our Church running smoothly (there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly). A special Thank You to Rev Sherry Pickett for another year of great news that she puts together every month! Jean and Jacob continue to make our Youth Group a fun and learning experience for the children; thank you! There are so many more people that have contributed to this year s events, classes, and fairs that I don t want to miss anyone; Thank You All! As we round out the year with our Parties and Events I again want to set intentions for the Holiday s. This time of year I have seen many types of emotions brought up. Some people view the Holidays with excitement and anticipation while others view it with dread and anxiety. Whatever the feelings you have around the Holiday celebrations, think about what feelings and experiences you would like to have. I now set the intention that we will all experience joy and abundance in all things this Holiday. I set the intentions to be open to the miracles around me, that I may experience them fully. I now set the intention for all people of this world to experience Peace, Joy and Abundance, whatever that may mean to them. I now hold the intention for the people of this world to realize that we are all here for a reason and we all contribute in our own way. I also hold the strong intention for all of the wars on this earth to end; I would love to see Peace on Earth in my lifetime. So be it and so it is. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! 3 Meaning of Yule Yule is the celebration of the winter solstice, and usually lands on Dec. 21 or 22. This year the solstice is on Monday, Dec. 21, at 11:48 pm. It is the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Traditionally, this is the birthday of the new Sun King, when the Oak King conquers the Holly King, and rules until the summer solstice. Often, these two are portrayed in familiar ways - the Holly King frequently appears as a woodsy version of Santa Claus. He dresses in red, wears a sprig of holly in his tangled hair, and is sometimes depicted driving a team of eight stags. Although Santa Claus is primarily based upon St. Nicholas, a 4th-century Christian bishop from Lycia (now in Turkey), the figure is also strongly influenced by early Norse religion. Saint Nicholas was known for giving gifts to the poor. In one notable story, he met a pious but impoverished man who had three daughters. He presented them with dowries to save them from a life of poverty and ill repute. The Oak King is usually pictured as a fertility god, and occasionally appears as the Green Man, aka Cernunnos. On this darkest of nights, the Goddess becomes the Great Mother and once again gives birth. And it makes perfect poetic sense that on the longest night of the winter, there springs the new spark of hope, the Sacred Fire, the Light of the World. Many ancient monuments and cities are aligned with the winter solstice sunrise or sunset, including Stonehenge in England; Newgrange in Ireland; the city of Tulum in Mexico, and the stone lines at Cerro del Gentil in Peru. Recently, researchers discovered two stone lines at Cerro del Gentil in Peru that, when approached straight on, appear to frame the Cerro del Gentil pyramid, roughly 1.2 miles in the distance. Using 3D-modeling software, researchers have discovered that the winter solstice sun sets exactly where the lines converge on the pyramid in the horizon. Why were ancient peoples so attuned with this astronomical event? Most ancient civilizations struggled to subsist through harsh winter months, thus the winter solstice marked a time of spiritual rejoice and celebration. As the days began to lengthen and the sun grew stronger each day, hope was renewed that another Spring would bring another harvest season, ensuring the continuation of life. To the rural folk who worked hard during the year, the end of a lean winter was something to celebrate and the God of the Sun was something to be honored. Today, it is still a festival that honors the cycle of nature and the Wheel of the Year.
