1 First Metaphysical Church December 2018 Newsletter
2 I love the holiday season!! The bright lights on Christmas trees, the happy carols, the decorations where ever you go. And let s not forget all the food! I was raised on a Christmas tree farm, so this was always a very busy but very happy time for my family. Almost everyone was in a festive mood, picking out the perfect tree. The kids are so excited; I've been asked so many times, When are we putting the tree up?. The very best reason I enjoy this season is the love we send out to our family, friends, church, and even people we pass on the street. We make a special effort to give to folks who could really use it, even leaving out treats for the birds and other wildlife. This is a wonderful time to invite people who are alone to share in our fun! Our Christmas/Yule party will be on December 16 at 3 pm, with a dollar store gift for a gift exchange, potluck, games, and crafts for the kids, and a visit from Santa! Service that night will be candle light caroling, which is always fun. So let your heart light shine and have a wonderful holiday season! I love you all so much, Rev. Connie
3 As usual at this time of year, we ask ourselves, Is this year almost over already? We look back and wonder where the time has gone. Each new year brings changes, and this year was no different. In August, we had the most successful Hippie Fest so far! We had some regular and some new vendors and look forward to expanding even further next year. Plus, we ve added some new healers to our usual monthly psychic fairs as well. Next month is our Congregational Meeting on Sunday, Jan. 20, when we will elect our new board. All members in good standing for at least a year are eligible to vote, so we hope to see a good turnout. We sincerely appreciate all the hard work and dedication shown by our board members throughout 2018! Without your devotion to our little church we would not have had such a successful year! But, we still have another month to go so let s not rush things! There is much to look forward to in December. As we assert in our mission statement, We honor the truth in all religions. We accept people of all faiths and invite everyone to join us in our spiritual journeys. It doesn't matter by what name you call your God or Goddess; it's what's in your heart that counts. We celebrate the diversity of faiths by honoring the different holidays we find in December. Along with Christmas, holidays also observed in December are Chanukah; Kwanzaa; and Yule, the Winter Solstice. Christmas, according to the Christian faith, is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, God s son. Out of love for the world he created God sent his son to earth to sacrifice his life for the redemption of souls. Chanukah is a Jewish festival commemorating the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend; Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Chanukah is observed
4 for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which occurs on December 2, this year. It is also known as the Festival of Lights and the Feast of Dedication. Yule is the celebration of the Winter Solstice on December 21. Yule observes the shortest day and the longest night of the year, and looks forward to the return of the light, when days begin to lengthen. For many cultures around the world, the winter solstice marks an important milestone. The longest hours of darkness or the rebirth of the sun is believed to hold a powerful energy for regeneration, renewal, and self-reflection. In ancient times the winter solstice was a celebration of the Goddess or Moon energy. Kwanzaa, a more recent celebration, was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of African studies at California State University, Long Beach. It is a seven-day cultural festival beginning on December 26 and ending on January 1. Kwanzaa observes The Seven Principles of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. It is celebrated with feasts, music, dance, poetry, and ends with a day dedicated to reflection and recommitment to The Seven Principles. Moving forward, we set our intentions for peace, joy, prosperity, love, and light to people of all faiths in the coming year, especially those in our own community here at FMC. New Year Blessings, Tessa Piontek
