1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. The passion and death of Jesus is a difficult time for us. It deals with such a tremendous reality of our faith. There is great beauty in this saving act of love, but it calls to mind both tremendous loss and that none of us are innocent of the Cross itself all of our sins are there. As we reflect on this, we may shed tears, we may become bitterly sorrowful. These responses are perfectly appropriate. We, like the disciples, have to process that Our Lord and friend has died. His earthly life ends in a failure. We are lonely, dejected, and there seems to be no hope. But the story did not end there. Christ s failure has become our victory. The sign of humiliation in his death has become our sure and certain sign of victory. We have been made sharers in his life. As the branches of the vine who is Christ, we die with him and in his resurrection we will live. May Christ ever be our light, our power, and our life. This week, remember that night comes and morning follows as spring does winter. Our life may be full of challenges, but we are not condemned to them, but, rather, we are made holy by how we respond to them. We can choose to run, put our heads in the sand or we can say, I believe, Lord. As failure comes into our lives, as difficulties seem to surround us, this is our choice. Are we worthy of the name we bear? Or do we rely on our human strengths and ensure our failure? Christ is Lord forever everything we are, we get from him. May his power, his light, and life come to you this week and may you cry out his name especially in your great joys and your great sorrow. He has not abandoned us he has saved us. Have courage, be brave, and praise the name of Jesus Christ who has delivered us from death by dying for us. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael St. Mary s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY March 25, 2018 St. Bridget s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469

Take advantage of what our parish has to offer this : Taizé prayer, a prayer labyrinth, Confession, and the liturgies of the Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. Where will you stand with Jesus this week? Question of the Week: Of all the people who have a part in the account of Jesus Passion and death, with whom do I identify the most? The Journey of Holy week is the annual retreat to end the Lenten Season, and to usher in the Easter Season, we walk with Jesus the final days of his earthly life. Please make time for Jesus this week in your personal prayer, in your attendance at Church, and living in the spirit of these Holy Days. Taizé prayer is a style of prayer used by the ecumenical religious community from Taizé, France. It is characterized by a calming, meditative atmosphere, simple sung refrains, scripture readings, silence, and prayer. Come center your heart to prepare to celebrate the Liturgies. Triduum Morning Prayer Each of the mornings of the three days leading up to Easter, the Triduum, we will offer Morning Prayer at 8am at St. Mary s. Even though these days are hectic, beginning the day with this communal prayer can be a wonderful bridge into Easter. Please join us on the mornings of March 29, 30, & 31, as we journey through the shortest, but most important season of the liturgical year. Prayer Labyrinth From Thursday morning, March 29, through the afternoon of Saturday, March 31, you are invited to walk our prayer labyrinth which will be set up in Dougherty Hall. What is a labyrinth, you might ask? A labyrinth is a complex and circuitous walk, a winding pathway that serves as an aid to meditation. In the Middle Ages, labyrinths were made with colored paving stones in the floors of cathedral naves. People walked the labyrinth as a symbolic pilgrimage to Jerusalem. To pray and walk a labyrinth can be a journey, which leads to finding God. Walking the pattern of the labyrinth seems to help some people get into a meditative state very quickly to find one s center and connect with God. Consider making some time during those days to walk our prayer labyrinth. Self-guided directions will be provided. Come and pray! Visiting Churches on Holy Thursday On Holy Thursday, there is an ancient tradition of visiting seven churches. Actually, you visit the Altar of Repose of the Blessed Sacrament in seven churches. On Holy Thursday, following the Mass of the Lord s Supper, the Blessed Sacrament is taken on a procession through the Church and reposed in the Tabernacle specially decorated and adorned with candles. This is a time for intense devotion for the Most Holy Sacrament and prayer as we enter into these holy days. Visiting the altar of Repose in the seven churches stems from pilgrims visiting the seven churches of Rome as a form of penance. The seven churches include St Peter s, St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. Mary Major, St. John in the Lateran, St. Laurence Outside the Walls, Holy Cross in Jerusalem and the Shrine of Our Lady of Divine Love. Why not start a new tradition for yourself and your family pick out several churches and visit Our Lord this Holy Night! St. Mary s will have Solemn Adoration from 9pm-Midnight and St. Bridget s will have Adoration from 9-10pm. Contact other churches to find out what their schedule will be.

Pontifical Good Friday Collection Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools, and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest, and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. Please be as generous as your means allow. For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit Stations of the Cross at Notre Dame Retreat House At 10:00 a.m. on Good Friday, March 30, we will gather to pray the Stations of the Cross at the outdoor Stations at Notre Dame Retreat House on Foster Road. Each year, this is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on Jesus Passion and Crucifixion, with Canandaigua Lake as a backdrop as we walk the grounds of Notre Dame. For those who have never joined us, please consider coming. You simply need to dress for the weather. We stay on the pavement so no one need worry about sinking in wet lawns. Programs are provided. For families, this is a venue which allows the children to also participate without concern to strict silence. This experience allows us all to give God thanks for Jesus in the midst of a natural surrounding. Please contact Deacon Claude with any questions. Good Friday Cross Walk The First United Methodist Church of Canandaigua is sponsoring the 4th Annual Community Cross Walk in Canandaigua on Good Friday. 6 Page Six St. Benedict Roman Catholic Parish March 25, 2018 Update from Fr. Kevin Murphy Hi everyone, I am alive and living at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse on 150 French Rd in Rochester (14618). I am making progress, having received my new left leg on February 26. I have stood on the new leg and even took 3 baby steps last Monday (3/12). I am getting used to wearing the leg and this is a slow process. I am hoping to be able to walk into the celebration of our Class reunion on May 23 at Cherry Ridge, Webster. I am feeling well and am in good spirits. Drop me a note or stop by if you are in the area. (Best to call ahead ) I hope to rejoin the community of St. Benedict's soon. Thanks for the prayers and thoughts of support. Peace, Fr. Kevin Święconka (Polish Blessing of the Baskets) Join us for the Easter Food Blessing at St. Mary s Church on Saturday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m. Święconka (sh-vee-en-soon-kah) is one of the most enduring and beloved Polish traditions. Baskets containing a sampling of Easter foods are brought to church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. The basket is traditionally lined with a white linen or lace napkin and decorated with sprigs of boxwood (bukszpan), the typical Easter evergreen. Poles take special pride in preparing a decorative and tasteful basket with crisp linens, occasionally embroidered for the occasion, and just enough boxwood and ribbon woven through the handle. Observing the beautiful foods and creations of other parishioners is one of the special joys of the event. While in some older or rural communities, the priest visits the home to bless the foods, the vast majority of Poles and Polish parishioners in Ireland visit the church on Holy Saturday. Contents of a Traditional Polish Easter Basket Maslo (butter) - This dairy product is often shaped into a lamb (Baranek Wielkanocny) or a cross. This reminds us of the good will of Christ that we should have toward all things. Babka (Easter bread) - A round or long loaf topped with a cross or a fish, symbolic of Jesus, who is the bread of life. Jajka (eggs) and Pisanki (decorated with symbols of Easter, of life, of prosperity) - Indicates new life and Christ s Resurrection from the tomb. Kiełbasa (sausage) - A sausage product, symbolic of God s favor and generosity. Szynka (ham) - Symbolic of great joy and abundance. Some prefer lamb or veal. The lamb also reminds Christians that the Risen Christ is the Lamb of God. Slonina (smoked bacon) - A symbol of the overabundance of God s mercy and generosity. Sól (salt) - A necessary element in our physical life. Symbolic of prosperity and justice and to remind us that people are the flavor of the earth. Ser (cheese) - Symbolic of the moderation Christians should have at all times. Chrzan (horseradish) - This represents the bitter herbs prescribed in the original Passover meal as a reminder of the bitterness and harshness of the life of slavery in Egypt. It also reminds us of the bitterness of the Passion of Jesus, by which he entered glory. Świeca (candle) - Represents Christ as the Light of the World. Colorful Ribbons and Sprigs of Greenery Are attached to the basket as signs of joy and new life in the season of spring and in celebration of the Resurrection. Linens Line the basket and are drawn over the top, which is ready for the priest s visit to the home or the trip to the church where it is joined with the baskets of others to await the blessing. The food is then set aside and enjoyed on Easter Sunday. Second Sunday of Easter/Divine Mercy Sunday There is nothing that man needs more than Divine Mercy that love which is benevolent, which is compassionate, which raises man above his weakness to the infinite heights of the holiness of God. ~ Saint John Paul II Please join us on the Second Sunday of Easter/Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary s for Eucharistic Adoration and recitation of the Chaplet. A reception will follow in Dougherty Hall. Next Community Meal We will be hosting the next community meal on Sunday, April 15 from 4:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. in Dougherty Hall. This king would ride into Jerusalem, not on a horse or in a carriage, but on a donkey. When the people saw Jesus riding on the donkey, they knew he was the king that they were waiting for. They ran out to meet him and waved palm branches in the air. They were so happy he came. Prayer God, I am so happy you sent Jesus to be my king.
