3 Hello, The Most Holy Trinity May 22, 2016 Notes From The Pastor's Pen Today is the Feast of the Holy Trinity, and it is always challenging that this is a central belief of our faith and yet it is hard for us to describe. We consider a valid Christian baptism to be one in which water is used and the words are used in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are said. We begin and end all of our prayers making the sign of the cross and repeating these same words, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and while other Christians believe this too, we use those words repeatedly in a manner that others do not. So I think even if we are not going to say something authoritative and definitive about the Trinity, it is something that we do need to reflect on. I thought that the Catholic Encyclopedia worded it fairly well when discussing our knowledge and yet not knowing about the Trinity and how we use the word mystery fairly well when it stated: The Vatican Council has explained the meaning to be attributed to the term mystery in theology. It lays down that a mystery is a truth which we are not merely incapable of discovering apart from Divine Revelation, but which, even when revealed, remains "hidden by the veil of faith and enveloped, so to speak, by a kind of darkness" (Constitution, "De fide. cath.", iv). In other words, our understanding of it remains only partial, even after we have accepted it as part of the Divine message. A central teaching of the Church that the Trinity is three persons but still just one God fits this understanding well, most of us know it but it can be challenging to explain. Trying different analogies is appropriate as they can express a part of our knowledge, but admit that it is not exact or complete, thus leaving the mystery to this understanding. One thing that can help for personal reflection is just considering what image we have when we consider each of the persons in the Trinity. We can start with the easiest, Jesus the Son. We have innumerable paintings and statues that have contributed to this image for us, and since He actually had human form on earth this is appropriate. For the Holy Spirit we have numerous images we use, tongues of flame, a dove, wind, not as concrete as Jesus, but as the Holy Spirit is God we are relating through there is something we can relate to or connect with. The difficulty comes with God the Father, and here I revert to my childhood. My image for God the Father was that of my grandfather. When you are young they seem ancient, almost timeless, and they always existed. They are close and caring, but normally not right there. They are more experienced and knowing about some things than even your parents, which when you are young is pretty impressive. As we age that view of our grandparents might change, and yet that image from childhood may still be fairly good. Consider your understanding, or even more important your relationship with the Trinity this weekend. Realize that relationship and love, while we can technically discuss the Trinity and not and overlook these words, is really at the core of the Trinity. Peace, Fr. 5 Saturday was a beautiful day for gardening at St. Joseph s. It was a bit chilly but with all the warm and wonderful people and the hard work we quickly warmed up and made light work of the morning. I would like to thank all that worked: Father Nick, Father Tom, Thom Schwetye, Tim O Connor, Libby O Connor, Matt Potter, Jim Mosblech, Gene Shalhoob, Janine Brodeur, Mary Kay Leary, and Julie Gerwitz. If I missed anyone, please know that your time and efforts were greatly appreciated. We worked very hard to get the spring clean-up and the flowers planted. I believe the beauty of the grounds reflects that effort. I also wanted to say a special Thanks to Father Tom s sister and brother-in-law, Jim and Marge Boever, for their generous donation of the award-winning dahlias that are planted at the southwest corner of the Church. You have probably seen the stakes. Soon that area will be a big beautiful bed of colorful dahlias. We are so fortunate! We are also initiating a new idea this year. We have divided the grounds into tiny areas so that if you are a gardener (and even if you are not) and wish to contribute and assist on a regular basis ON YOUR TIMEFRAME, please let me know. I can or send you a map of the areas and basically what needs to be done. Thank you again for all the help and more importantly the gardening friendships being cultivated!!! St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer, Ted Simmons, will serve as Honorary Chairman of the 2016 golf committee! Guests will enjoy lunch, 18 holes of golf, a silent auction, and dinner. 7 Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network is a national organization dedicated to the pastoral ministry with migrant and seasonal Farmworker. Founded in 1986, the Network operates with the support and the collaboration of the Office for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Refugees of the US Catholic Conference. The CMFN works to bring the pastoral presence of the Church to thousands of migrant farmworkers throughout the country. Though most farmworkers continue to adhere to their traditional faith, they often lack the pastoral presence and support of the local church community. Their mission is to promote the formation of welcoming church communities by advocating social justice, dignity and respect for all in order that we may be a missionary church. The seasonal farmworkers who CMFN serves are highly mobile immigrants, residing in isolated rural areas, and are nearly invisible in our society and in our Church. CMFN helps bridge the differences and distances that separate the people of God. "Heart Speaks to Heart" will be a reflection on living community at L'Arche, her friendship with Fr. Henri Nouwen, and the gifts of people with disabilities. Sue will speak on Tues.
