I am not sure where I found the article below, but it is an appropriate reflection for our theme this weekend: On the evening of March 24, 1522, Ignatius of Loyola went to the monastery of Montserrat. There he spent the night in prayer standing or kneeling, but never resting or relaxing. He remained vigilant. At dawn, having placed his sword and armor at the altar of Our Lady, he put on a beggar s cloak and followed Christ. Such vigils were not uncommon in his day. And still now monks and nuns rise early to pray and people remain in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament throughout the night. They are watching, remaining vigilant for the Lord. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival (Lk 12:37). What Ignatius did that night, we must do throughout our entire lives. Vigilance is essential to the Christian life. Indeed, the great enemy of faith is not persecution but slumber. The Church thrives under persecution. At those moments she sees her purpose more clearly and more perfectly resembles her Spouse. Ease, comfort and complacency these threaten the Christian life far more than persecution because they breed a spiritual stupor, a dullness of soul and a forgetfulness of the Lord s return. We might speak of someone losing his faith. But people do not lose their faith as they lose glasses or car keys. Rather, they grow complacent and comfortable, tired and sleepy. They fall into a slumber and fail to form their lives by the Faith. Even as they sleep, their faith is taken from them. I was so full of sleep, Dante explains, when I first left the way of truth behind. Against this spiritual stupor we should cultivate a vigilance of mind and heart. We must remain, first, mentally awake (as the Boy Scouts pledge). Many fail to guard their minds against the world s skepticism, cynicism and doubt. They allow the world s pernicious theories to infiltrate their thoughts. Even as they might continue to practice the Faith, they become intellectually sleepy. Their thinking becomes more and more formed by the world. Before they know it they judge their faith in terms of the world, rather than the reverse. Intellectual vigilance requires us to monitor closely what we listen to, read and watch. All media communicates ideas. If we want our faith to remain intact, we must learn to filter out those ideas. Even better, we ought to seek out that media that places in our minds good thoughts and trains our thinking in keeping with the mind of the Church. ********************* I hope I will see many of you at the annual Black and White Gala and Auction this Friday! 3 Liz Huebl ~ Learning To Trust and Let Go Liz and Mike Huebl moved to the Quad Cities in 2007 for Liz to attend Palmer. Mike works at the Arsenal while Liz is currently a stay-at-home mom and small business entrepreneur. They are parents of Ellie (6), Graycen (4) and Redmond who is almost 2. Liz recently went through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) and her dynamic personality was a true light to the team and the other candidates. In reflecting on the questions for this article, she shares that encountering the unconditional love of Jesus, who embraces us in our darkness and our light, has taught her the importance of loving yourself (right) where you are. "I am so critical of myself and was really good at feeling as though I fell short. Once I realized that God loves me I found it easier to embrace my faults and feel more comfortable in my own skin. God has taught me how to love and accept others where they are at." Parenting has also given Liz insights as she reflects on her faith journey. "Raising children is frustrating and amazingly rewarding!! They are a mirror of what I choose to project onto the world. They challenge me each and every day to be better and they are truly gifts from God." You might see Liz and her family walking their kids to school as they live right down the street from St. Paul's. Liz shares that they try to instill a sense of the kids knowing the personal and relational aspects of Jesus. "We pray as a family every meal and at bedtime. We talk a lot about Jesus and the relationship they can have with him. He is in every one of us, he knows us better than we know ourselves. I want my kids to know that Jesus is their constant, they can turn to him no matter what the situation." Perhaps one of the biggest challenges for all of us in our faith journey is to learn to trust and to let go of control. Liz can relate. "I don t have just one time where I ve struggled with trusting God. To be perfectly honest, I struggle with trusting him weekly if not daily some days. It s not that I don t trust Him.I just get so caught up in thinking I have control in the situation. If I don t give pause and seek Him, I get lost in how I used to deal with things, by myself. That is how I see His glory giving pause, praying, then moving forward. My life completely simplifies itself when I allow God in. " Thank you, Liz, for witnessing to our the constant love of Jesus that can break through the negative voices in the world. May we all rest in that knowledge of His love and grace.
