3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Last Sunday, Sept. 14, on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Archbishop Jerome Listecki promulgated a decree accepting the recommendations of the delegates who were present at the Archdiocesan Synod in June Delegates from the parishes and districts of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee participated in this Synod and voted on priorities for the Church of Milwaukee for the next several years. Archbishop Listecki wrote a Synodal Declaration called Filled with the Holy Spirit. In it he says: In light of the Synod, I propose a new mission statement for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee: To proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ through his saving death and resurrection by calling, forming and sending disciples to go and make new disciples. As a people, we are called to encounter Jesus and grow as disciples through the sacramental life of the Church. In the document, the Archbishop identifies the following pastoral priorities: Catholic Identity (Liturgy and Cultural Diversity), Evangelization (Evangelization, Formation, Catholic Social Teaching, and Marriage and Family) and Stewardship (Stewardship and Leadership). Archbishop Listecki writes: The mission of the archdiocese, as is that of the Church, is to powerfully evangelize and lead everyone into a deeper Christian discipleship and so to experience salvation through a relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. The parish is the center of this evangelizing mission. The full document can be found at Synodal-Declaration.htm. I would encourage everyone to read it in order to get a sense of the direction of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee for the coming years. God s Blessings, Fr. RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE A Red Cross Blood Drive will be held in the Parish Center on Friday, Oct. 17, from noon to 5 p.m. Thank you for the giving the gift of life. DEAR PARISHIONERS, I am writing my last thank you note to all of you. As you may have heard or read, I am retiring. The warm weather down south will soon be calling me. I couldn t count all of the caring and giving people such as yourselves that I have met while heading the Lake Geneva Food Pantry for the past eight years. When I started volunteering at the pantry, I didn t realize the need was so great. I only wish many others would realize the same. It has been an overwhelming experience to see how many people have come forward to help those in need in our great community. Without your continued support, we could not in turn help those in need. Bev Erickon will be taking over my position. I am confident that all of you will continue to support the food pantry in any way you can. Thank you again, Jean Benedict PARISH DIRECTORY We will have one final day of photography for those who previously missed it. The date is Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 9 p.m. in the Jonah Room. Sign up after Mass in the Parish Center or by calling the Parish Office during the week at (262) Remember, you receive a free 8 x 10 photo and directory. There is an opportunity to purchase additional photos but no obligation. People have been very happy with their pictures! If you have any questions or want to submit photos (deadline is Oct. 1), please call Martha Cucco at (262) SHEPHERDS OF CHRIST PRAYER GROUP Our prayer group meets in church most Wednesday mornings to pray for priests, the Church and the world, as well as for our own personal intentions. Next dates: Wednesdays, Sept. 24 and Oct. 1, at 11:15 a.m. RAISING A THINKING CHILD Give your child the tools he or she needs to be a social problem solver! Words that parents and caregivers use set the stage for a child to think and independently solve problems. Children need practice thinking of alternatives and developing their problem solving skills. Raising a Thinking Child will give your child the tools to understand others perspectives, think independently about interpersonal problems and respond with empathy and confidence. This workshop series is for parents of children ages 4-7 and is offered at St.Francis de Sales parish on Mondays, Sept. 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27, and Nov. 10, 17 and 24, 9-10:30 a.m. It is important to attend as many classes as possible to obtain the desired results with your child. The cost is $25 and includes a workbook and other program and handouts. Scholarship or registration reimbursement may be available. Children 4 and older may attend the children's program during class for free. Jenny Wehmeier, family living educator at Walworth County UW- Extension, is facilitating the class. To register, contact Sue Bulla, school counselor, at (262) ext. 133, guidance@sfdslg.org) or Jenny Wehmeir at (262) , jenny.wehmeier@ces.uwex.edu. Paid registration is required before Sept. 25. ST. 8 ALTAR SOCIETY MEETING All women of the parish are invited to help behind the scenes keeping our church clean and providing for the altar. Our next meeting is Monday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Jonah Room. If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Lazzaroni at (262) We hope to see you there! IT S TIME TO THINK ABOUT R.C.I.A. The RCIA program will begin here at St. Francis. These classes will benefit anyone who is interested in learning more about the Catholic faith. If you were never baptized, if you were baptized in another denomination or if you were baptized and raised Catholic, but you left the church for some reason and you now would like to return, these classes will help you. Attending these classes does not obligate you in any way. Any choices you make regarding your faith life are strictly up to you. But if you have been feeling called to explore your faith life, the RCIA will help you to find answers. For more information, call Geri Braun, our RCIA coordinator, at (262) WHO CARES? Ever have the experience of being wrongly accused, misunderstood, maligned or belittled seemingly without reason? No amount of mental gymnastics is going to make such wrongs seem right. If only life didn t at times throw such roadblocks in our way! Bearing wrongs patiently is considered a Spiritual Work of Mercy. It might just be the most difficult and confusing admonition of the entire series. What good can come of such patience? Who profits in the end? With bullying and racism being hot topics in our culture, shouldn t people be prepared to fight back when they fall victim to such persecution? They are told to be patient and put their trust in God. When our brothers are being put through trials of this kind the Scriptures as well as Catholic tradition have something to tell us. We are to defend the weak and lead the way in restoring justice. This brings us to the point of our series which is to recognize our parish volunteers as they live out their faith. Those seeking social justice risk distain and even physical harm as they stand up for the rights of others. Let us also remember our service men and women who put their lives on the line to protect and defend not only us but many around the world. Unlike Cain in the Book of Genesis, Christians are their brothers keepers. May our Lord guide us in our zeal to better the lives of others. Submitted by the Human Concerns Committee HELP NEEDED The Religious Education program needs your help! Contact Katie for more information on available positions at (262) or dre@sfdslg.org. LAKE GENEVA CLOTHES CLOSET Gently used clothing for children, teens, women and men is available free at the Clothes Closet at the Methodist Church in Lake Geneva. SIDE BY SIDE FUNDRAISER DINNER Come join the fun and fellowship at Simple Cafe on Tuesday, Sept 30, to raise funds for Side by Side! Each month, Side by Side helps neighbors in need of assistance with rent, utilities, and medication, as well as education and referrals to community agencies to meet other needs. This will be our last dinner at Simple until next spring. Your donation helps keep families from eviction and having utilities shut off. 10 St. Joseph Catholic Church, Harvard IL St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Lake Geneva WI MEN S EMMAUS RETREAT - October 17, 18, 19, 2014 Come and experience the journey to Emmaus As together we recognize the Lord Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread Q. Exactly what is Emmaus? A. Emmaus is a relaxed, passive retreat weekend designed for those men who feel they would like to explore a deeper relationship with God. Every one of us has considered the questions, Does God really exist? or How should God s existence affect my life? Unfortunately we are all very busy and don t allow ourselves enough time to explore the answers. That s what the Emmaus retreat is for you. The men organizing and hosting the Emmaus retreat will not try to convince you of their answers; instead they will share their own experiences with you and let you draw your own conclusions. We are not men who were born Holy, and we have each led very different lives. But through the power of the Holy Spirit we have found our way back to the Lord and would like to tell you about this life changing experience. And for many of us, it was during an Emmaus Retreat that our hearts were touched by God. Q. How do they go about doing this? A. You will hear a series of talks by other men concerning their own experiences with the Lord. You will have a chance to reflect, pray, and consider the bigger questions of life in a place that is far enough away to separate you from the distractions of everyday life, but close enough that you could be home in a matter of minutes. Q. How long does the weekend last? A. You ll need to arrive at the Inspiration Ministries (located at N2270 State Road 67, Walworth, WI 53184) between 6:00PM and 6:30PM on Friday, October 17, The weekend will conclude at St. Joseph s Church at 5:30 PM on Sunday, October 19, Q. How do I dress for the weekend? A. Extremely casual and comfortable. Q. What should I bring? A. Bring a change of clothes for two days, your personal toiletries (toothbrush, soap, etc.). Everything else will be provided. Q. What about food? A. All food and drink will be provided. When you arrive Friday evening there will be a light meal for those who will not have had time to grab dinner. If you have any special dietary requirements, just let us know on the application form. Q. How much does Emmaus cost? A. The cost for the weekend is $100. A non-refundable deposit ($30) is required to hold your place. If you don t have the money, please don t let this stop you. Please get in your application and payment as soon as possible. Fill out the application; invest a bit of your time. Rethink, refocus, reflect and find your way. If you don t have time to make a retreat like this that means you NEED a retreat like this!
