5 PAG E S 4 & Ann Evans Woodall Lecture What does religion have to do with ecology? Or ecology with religion? Come to the 2016 Woodall Lecture and find out from an expert! Dr. Mary Evelyn Tucker, co-director of the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology, will be our speaker this year. Dr. Tucker is a Senior Lecturer and Research Scholar at Yale, with appointments in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, as well as the Divinity School and the Department of Religious Studies. Her special area of study is Asian religions. Dr. Tucker s concern for the growing environmental crisis, especially in Asia, led her and her husband, Dr. John Grim, to establish a series of conferences on World Religions and Ecology at Harvard. These led to the establishing of the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology, the largest international multi-religious project of its kind. The Forum recognizes that religions need to be in dialogue with other disciplines (e.g., science, economics, education, public policy) in seeking comprehensive solutions to both global and local environmental problems. Twenty years ago religion and ecology was neither a field of study nor a force for transformation. Over the past two decades a new field of study has emerged with courses being taught at colleges and high schools across North America and in some universities in Europe. Moreover, a new force of religious environmentalism is growing in churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques around the world. Now every major religion has statements. This year s Woodall Lecture is co-sponsored by Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL). Founded in 2003 by Episcopal priest The Rev. Woody Bartlett, and headed by The Rev. Kate McGregor Mosley, Georgia Interfaith Power & Light encourages congregations in faithful stewardship and sustainable practices that conserve and protect the Earth s resources and has helped them reduce their energy footprint through professional energy audits and energy efficiency matching grants. GIPL helps congregations educate their members on environmental issues. Most importantly, GIPL seeks to engage all people of faith in the moral imperative to respond to a hurting planet through healing acts of reconciliation and justice for all Creation. A cocktail reception will be held before the lecture in the Kennedy Courtyard, weather permitting. Tickets for the reception are $20 and may be purchased online or at the Parish Life table on Sundays. Each ticket includes a reserved seat for the lecture. The lecture itself is free and open to the public and will be followed by a dessert reception and book signing for all attendees. The Woodall Lecture Series was established in gratitude to Ann Woodall for her extraordinary service to All Saints and for her loving and gracious leadership of the All Saints Church Centennial. Each autumn, All Saints hosts an innovative and influential theologian who offers, in Ann s words, a banquet for our souls. Previous speakers include Barbara Brown Taylor, John Dominic Crossan, Marcus Borg, Amy-Jill Levine, Andrew Young, Dwight Andrews, and John Philip Newell. Thursday, October 27 5:00 p.m. cocktail reception in the Kennedy Courtyard (ticketed entrance only), 7:00 p.m. lecture in Ellis Hall Tickets for the cocktail reception are $20 each, and available at the Parish Life table on Sundays,or anytime online at allsaintsatlanta.org/formation/ woodall-reception-registration/. Coming in November All Saints Choir to sing Haydn Requiem on All Saints Sunday The All Saints Adult Choir, soloists and orchestra, conducted by Choirmaster Raymond Chenault, will perform Requiem in C minor by Michael Haydn, younger brother of Joseph Haydn, on All Saints Sunday. Mozart was greatly influenced by Michael Haydn s writing, and they were good friends, so you will hear a lot of similarity in style and melodic beauty. Haydn wrote this work in 1791 for the death of his first Salzburg patron, Archbishop Sigismond, soon after the death of Haydn s one-year-old daughter. Haydn never fully recovered from the loss of his only child. Let us celebrate the lives and memories of all of our loved ones on All Saints Sunday, as we listen to this rarely sung Requiem by one of the great composers from the Classical period.
