Our Easter celebration continues today and for six more weeks as we, and especially new Catholic Christians among us and around the world, unpack the meaning of Jesus Christ s resurrection in our lives today. Thomas had to see to believe. What do you believe about the Resurrection? As we continue our Easter celebration today and in the coming weeks, let us pray that this Eucharist will deepen and strengthen our belief. My cousins are twins. They are fraternal twins, not identical ones, so they never got to pull any of the cool "twin" stuff when they were growing up. They didn't get to confuse teachers by exchanging classes nor did they have the chance to mix up girlfriends or boyfriends by switching up on a date. As a matter of fact, since my cousins are Paul and Karen there wasn't much about them that was very twin-like except for the fact that they had the same birthday. Even though the family was close, as they grew up they chose different paths in life, going to universities in different states and even moving in opposite directions after graduating. Occasionally, they would talk about a "special" connection, but for the most part they lived their lives as any brother and sister. In today's Gospel, it is mentioned that Thomas is a twin. We don't know any more than that. We don't know if the other twin is a brother or sister. We don't even know if the other is still alive. The mention of Thomas being a twin is just one of those fascinating little fragments that pops up from time to time in the Scriptures that leaves a person wondering, "What is the rest of the story?" The "rest of the story" in this case is that physical knowledge of Jesus is just not that important. Just like it is unimportant whether Thomas' twin is there, so too it is not essential to have the physical body of Jesus standing in front of us to "prove" that he lives. We do not have to see Jesus to believe in him. As a matter of fact, believing in Jesus is seeing him not in his physical form, but in the community of believers who act as him in the world today. In effect, people should see him in us, because we act as his identical twin Liturgical Publications Inc
