September 2016 P.O. Box 338 Mesilla, NM Basilica de San Albino Council # New Mexico District 13 San Albino Knight Grand Knight s Message Jimmy Beasley Where two or more council come together, great things can happen. On Friday August 5th members from Robert Gamboa Council 9527 joined us in removing several more dead trees for the Sisters from the Holy Cross Catholic School residence (second annual event). I want to thank all Brothers from both councils who assisted in this project and the Sisters really appreciate the help. I also want to recognize all of our members and families who assisted with the annual Carmelite Rummage Sale. Lori Dalstrom who heads up this annual event was very appreciative of the support we gave. It was another very successful sale with all of the proceeds going to the Carmelite Sisters. During the 10:00 Mass one Sunday in early August, Fr. Ron Burke gave a wonderful thank you for the painting of the hand rails leading into the church. There had been several complaints during the previous few weeks about the heat being generated by the black colored rails being way too hot to handle. Brother Tony Nieto volunteered to paint the top of the hand rails a lighter color to reduce the amount of heat generated by the summer sun. Tony did a wonderful job and all who use those rails greatly appreciate his efforts and especially Fr. Burke who said I will not be leaving part of my hide stuck to the rails any more. As we look forward to September and some cooler weather, the That Man is You! (TMIY!) men s bible study and fellowship program begins Saturday September 10. We are also planning our Diez Y Seiz de Septembre Fiesta fundraising dinner on Saturday the 17th. The proceeds from this event will go towards the needs of Basilica of San Albino. The council is also co-sponsoring the annual Blue Mass scheduled for Thursday September 27 along with St. Genevieve s Council The good Lord keeps sending us these worthy projects to do for His glory, not our own. 2 s and Activities Council Activities Knights of Columbus council activities foster a sense of fraternity among our members and families. While much of our charitable work is focused toward the Church and community, there are times when members and families come together in projects that foster unity of the group. It is through shared goals, faith and a sense of extended family that the fraternal ties of members and our families grow. A Monthly Family Gathering and Rosary, Corporate Communion, along with recognition of a Knight, Lady, and Family of the month/year are just a few examples of events that help strengthen the bonds of unity, fraternity and charity of our council. If you have any questions or, would like to join our Knights of Columbus council, please contact Paul Grubel (575) or the parish office. Church Activities As Catholics, we are called to take an active part in building a strong parish, Church and community. Our Knights of Columbus council is perfectly positioned to be the lead organization within our parish and community to answer that call. Church activity programs also enable each member to grow in his faith, become a better husband and father, and set a standard for other Catholic men. men s bible study/fellowship, Alter server appreciation, Parish/Hall maintenance, Corporate communions, and Council-wide volunteers as Holy Communion Ministers and/or ushers at Mass are just a few or our council s commitment to the Church. For further information about the Knights of Columbus or our council, please contact Howard Schmitt (915) or the Parish Office. Family Activities In today world, with all the demands that life brings, it s hard to come by quality family time. Our children also face similar pressures from school work, sports, church, and other activities. Your Knights of Columbus council offers families a chance to build stronger bonds by bringing family members together in charitable and entertaining activities. Our council supports families in a variety of ways. Our family programs include monthly s, a monthly Family Gathering & Rosary, Adopt/Support families in need within the community to name a few. Each of these programs strengthens the family and instills in our children the blessings of charity. For more information on our family activities or the Knights of Columbus please contact Richard Portillo at (575) or the parish office.
Knights of Columbus Insurance Corner Don t Crowdfund Your Family s Future There is a new phenomenon sweeping the internet: crowdfunding. Pioneered by organizations like GoFundMe, crowdfunding allows anyone to donate to a project or cause online. Crowdfunding is increasingly being used to raise funds for grieving families. Chances are you ve seen this more than once. Someone passes away, and within a day or two a representative from the family opens a crowdfunding page to raise funds to pay for funeral expenses and medical bills. Without question, crowdfunding is a great way to harness the power of the internet for charitable ends, but it is often insufficient. Recent studies show that the average crowdfunding memorial page raises $2,000-$2,200 far below the average cost of funeral services. 1 Grieving families are left to deal with the shortfall as well as the additional stress of soliciting donations, figuring out how to access the money and calculating platform fees. September is designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. It s a great opportunity for you to evaluate your life insurance coverage and make sure your family s future will not be left up to a crowdfunding page. Since life insurance guards against one of life s only certainties, it s a product that nearly everyone needs. The question is not Do I need life insurance? but rather Who should I get it from? Who Should I Get It From? Every life insurance company sells life insurance. There are hundreds of them in North America. But there s only one life insurance company that belongs to you. From the beginning, the Knights of Columbus has been determined to offer insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights and to uphold the Catholic commitment that has animated our Order since Father McGivney s time. Today, our insurance program protects hundreds of thousands of families, with more than $100 billion in force. Last year alone, Knights of Columbus families received more than $800 million in insurance benefits. Being your insurance company also means that we have to be ethical, responsible, Catholic and charitable just as you would expect. Recently we received our third consecutive World s Most Ethical company designation by the Ethisphere Institute, and since 1975, the Knights of Columbus has been among the most highly rated life insurers in North America. 2 We refuse to invest in companies who deal in lines of business that run contrary to church teaching. We also use proceeds from our insurance business to donate to Catholic and charitable causes around the world. The insurance business and local councils are the two primary sources for the more than $1.55 billion the Knights of Columbus has donated to charity in the past decade. Our strength cannot be beaten. Our ethical pedigree cannot be questioned. And our Catholic commitment is never compromised. Not every life insurance company can say that. How Much Do I Need? As a Knight, you have a full-time, professional brother Knight field agent to call your own. My job my mission is to help you and your family evaluate your situation and determine how much coverage is needed to help meet your needs within your budget. It s a proven fraternal system that has helped countless families when they need it most. So, as we observe Life Insurance Awareness Month, don t leave your family s future to chance charity. Protect your family with the safety and guarantees of life insurance from the Knights of Columbus. Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows Those Wounds that gored my Savior, deeply on my heart engraved. Mine it be, Christ s throes in sharing. Mine it be, his anguish bearing. These, his wounds, to keep in mind. From the flame of hell unending, be thou, Virgin, me defending, in that dreadful reckoning day! When in death my eyes are closing, open them, Lord, to see reposing, Victory s crown in Mary s hand. When my frame by death is broken, and my doom by thee is spoken, be it, Lord, the better land. Amen. I beseech you, O Lord Jesus Christ, that the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose most holy soul was pierced in the hour of your Passion by the sword of sorrow, may intercede for us with Your mercy now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

From the Brothers Stewardship and Gratitude It's about giving of your time to the church and not only on Sundays but all thru the week, months, and years. It's about living your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and our Blessed Mother Mary. This means helping out with church duties, ushering, greeting our brothers and sisters when they come in for mass. Helping out after mass, picking up after everyone has left. In other words give of yourself to the Lord's work not only for coming to mass. As brother knight's we are called to serve not only our church but the community and our brother's and sister's in need. "Gratitude," it's about being thankful to our LORD for giving us life, and he has called us to be his servants. God chose us to do his work,it's being involved in some capacity to do God's work. Stewardship is all about giving to everyone your time and your talent. God doesn't want us Christian's just to sit around and let someone else help because I am too busy. God bless everyone. Brother Portillo Prayer for Police Officers ~Anonymous~ Almighty God we pray to you in heaven up above, Watch over our dear police officers and protect them with your love. Please guide them as they keep us safe both day and night And hold them firmly in your care should danger come their way. Give them true strength and courage as they serve till duty's end And one more thing to ask dear Lord protect their family and their friends. Amen.
From the Brothers September is the month of Our Lady of Sorrows Devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady has its roots in Sacred Scripture and in Christian Piety, which always associates the Blessed Mother with her suffering Son. Today s feast was introduced by the Servites in order to intensify devotion to Our Lady s Sorrows. In 1817 Pius VII suffering grievously in exile but finally liberated by Mary s intercession extended the feast to the universal Church. The seven sorrows of Mary are: 1) The prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:25-35), 2) The flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15), 3) Loss of Child Jesus for three days (Luke 2:41-50), 4) Mary meets Jesus on is way to Calvary (Luke 23:27-31), 5) Crucifixion and Death of Jesus (John 19:25-30), 6) The body of Jesus being taken from the Cross (Psalm 130), and 7) The burial of Jesus (Mark 15:40-47). Excerpts from CatholicCulture.org Individual commitment to a group effort that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work. ~ Vince Lombardi Prayer of Husband and Wife O God, we want to live our life together with you and always to continue it with you. Help us never to hurt and never to grieve each other. Help us to share all our works, all our hopes, all our dreams, all our successes, all our failures, all our joys and all our sorrows. Help us to have no secrets from each other so that we may be truly one. Keep us always true to each other, and grant that all the years ahead may draw us ever closer to each other. Grant that nothing may ever come between us and nothing may ever make us ever drift apart. And as we live with each other, help us to live with you, so that our love may grow perfect in your love, for you are the God whose name is love. This we ask for your love s sake. Amen A four-year-old girl was learning to say the Lord's prayer. She was reciting it all by herself without help from her mother. She said, "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us some . AMEN."
Picture This... (left) Brother Daniel Duffin moments before a monster trout attacks his line. He reeled in the whopper of the day at 17 1/2. (center) Half-an-hour earlier, that same monster trout had attacked brother Jim Maes line and pulled his rod right out of his hand! (right) Brother Jim, after much debating decides to retrieve his rod; he emerges unscathed, but completely soaked :) Only slightly traumatized by the events at the lake, Brothers Jimmy Beasley, Jim Maes, and Daniel Duffin still manage to clean up nicely for the NM State Organizational Meeting.
Picture This... Brother Mark Marquez and the Carmelite Sisters get a sneak peak at Rummage Sale goods! Please send any pictures of council activities to Brother Daniel Duffin via at dduffin@alumni.nd.edu for inclusion in the monthly bulletins. If you only have hard copies of pictures I can scan and include them if you get them to me at the monthly council meetings.
