John David Jolley II MBA, PMP, Grand Knight Sacred Heart council jdjolley@swbell.net Mobile: Gun Show is returning to K of C Hall this month There will be a Gun Show Aug at the Knights of Columbus Hall and several volunteers are needed. Volunteers at the Gun Show will help with shift work for concession sales. Approximately 15 volunteers will be needed both days for the concession sales, which the Knights have been asked to do for the show. The Gun Show consists of 20-plus vendors and has attracted good crowds in the past. The show will begin at 8 a.m. both days. Breakfast and lunch items will be served at the Gun Show on both of the days. A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so also you must love one another. -John 13:34

Registration picks up late, nearly $7K raised in 2016 Sacred Heart Council Golf Tournament We held our 17th annual scholarship fund raising golf tournament on Friday, July 8, at the Los Alamos Golf

It was a crazy week as the tournament formed up. On Tuesday, three days prior to the event, we had three teams registered and things were looking bleak indeed.

4 Registration picks up late, nearly $7K raised in 2016 Sacred Heart Council Golf Tournament We held our 17th annual scholarship fund raising golf tournament on Friday, July 8, at the Los Alamos Golf Course, followed by a dinner and raffle at Cottonwood on the Greens. The tournament raised nearly $7,000, all of which will be distributed as scholarships to worthy Los Alamos High School students. It was a crazy week as the tournament formed up. On Tuesday, three days prior to the event, we had three teams registered and things were looking bleak indeed. We had a go/no-go meeting on Wednesday with Michael Phillips and thankfully by that time we had eight teams, so the tournament proceeded as planned. By Thursday we had 13 teams and eventually we ended up with 15, which was a decent showing. Many thanks goes to Michael for his patience and flexibility as this thing formed up from essentially nothing the week of the tournament. We decided to hold the dinner at the course to ease planning given all the craziness. This turned out great as the players really enjoyed the dinner/raffle at a very pleasant location right at the course. Thanks goes to Pawel for working with us at short notice and putting on a delicious pizza/salad bar. All players were given drink tickets, which I'm sure helped the mood. I received many positive comments from players. The event was definitely a success. Several Knights from other councils participated and had a good time. We have extra K of C hats and coffee cups available for purchase. All proceeds will go to our culture of life fund to be used to fight for the rights of the unborn, and to assist needy mothers. Buy yourself a cool hat or coffee cup and help out with this important effort. I'll bring hats and coffee cups to the next council meeting. Price is $20 for a hat and $10 for a coffee cup. I wish to thank all that helped organize and run the tournament, especially Andy Trottier, Steve Ciddio, John Ireland, Jim Mork, Jacque Ciddio, Mark Dinehart, Nancy Kosar, Jim and Tom Hanlon, and my wife Jo- Ellen. Thanks also goes to Dennis McCloskey, who admirably served as our pro at the Jamie Lee Ireland fundraising hole. We are grateful for the support of our many sponsors. Vivat Jesus! PGK Jeff Brown

5 Gilbert Perez: Mother needs our help Thanks from Mesilla Council Brothers and Ladies All, The message below came to me from Lady Maria Cortez, State Newsletter Editor and has been approved by our Worthy State Deputy Brother Patrick Mason for statewide approval. If anyone of you is familiar with the Human Services Regulations for helping this family with financial assistance, food assistance and Medicaid, please contact Lady Deanna Jaramillo at and let her know that you have the expertise and are willing to help. If there are other solutions, please feel free to share those also. Lady Deanna and her husband were the former State Culture of Life Couple for New Mexico. For the greater glory of God! Vivat Jesu! Viva Cristo Rey! Gilbert R. Perez State Executive Assistant I am asking for help. I am not sure if we can send out an to all the ladies and/or all the Knights but a young mom needs some help. Vanessa is a mother of five, ages 2, 3, 5, 9, 11. Four boys, one girl. The girl is the 9-year-old. Vanessa's husband was killed in a motorcycle accident a little over a month ago. She had to move out of where they were living, which was technically a shack, and has been moving from friends homes to motels. Her mother is here for now but will be returning to California which is where Vanessa is from. Vanessa doesn't want to move back. Seeing that her husband didn't work enough jobs or had a big enough 'career,' so to speak, she and the kids have been denied social security. She has one child how does receive SS because of a minor handicap, but that is about it. I greatly appreciate the hard work your guys put into this meeting. Every aspect of the event including hotel accommodations, meeting sites, meals and the Mass were first rate. I know how challenging it is to put on a meeting and we (DGK and Chancellor) really enjoyed the event. Thank you for stepping up as the host council. 6 Mother Needs Our Help... She has never worked in her life because her and her late husband had been together for 15 years. She is approximately 30 years old. He did everything; shopping, bills, etc. She has no car and has to use the bus to get anywhere. I have been able to get her some bus passes from my work for a lower cost. I was also able to collect some donations, monetary, from some of my friends and colleague and also gave her a Walmart gift card to buy necessities. I've been in touch with the Barrett Foundation (house) and they gave me a list of agencies she can call for help, but one problem is that to get housing assistance from some of the organizations, she and the kids would have to live in a shelter from anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months. I do NOT want to see her having to put all five kids and her into a shelter. I am not sure if they have family rooms or not, but it doesn't sound good to me. I am reaching out to all of you for suggestions, recommendations, anything to help this young mom take care of her family. Does anyone know of someone who works for any of the organizations for housing assistance? Or does anyone know of someone who may need someone to clean their house that may have a guest or a mother-in-law s house on the property? I am grasping at straws right now to try to figure out what we can do to help her. There are some of her late husband s relatives that live here and have been doing what they can but they have their own lives to live and have since started drifting away. I found out about Vanessa because of some of my friends knew a distant cousin of Vanessa's late husband. Maybe we can send this out to all the Knights in the state. I was thinking of asking for monetary donations be sent to me and I can purchase gift cards, pay for the motel, bus passes, anything to help her get by until she can find permanent housing. The three oldest will be going back to school soon and will need school supplies. Please me back and let me know what you all think. The Knights of Columbus gives our men the opportunity to improve their own life, their community, and enrich their faith. We are off to a great start with the Knights of Columbus Programs. There are two positions still open, which are the Youth and Membership Director positions. We need to find more ways to engage our youth and you can help us with that endeavor. The Membership Director positions is a very rewarding position where you can help potential new members to experience the fraternal bond that Knights share while growing closer to his family, faith, and God.
