1 May 2018 P.O. Box 26 Mesilla, NM Basilica de San Albino Council # New Mexico District 13 San Albino Knight Brothers, Ladies, Families & Friends, There s something about using a camping table as an Altar for Mass :) But first, let s back up a bit...this past weekend I had the opportunity to go on a Father and Son camping trip with Father Bill McCann and a group of a dozen Catholic men from Las Cruces and their sons. The weekend started off with a bang and ended with a bang. The group was first brought up to local shrine out in the desert near Salem by Jerry a local Catholic chile farmer. Talk about a living faith! This shrine was truly a testament to the faith of the local farmers and it was awe inspiring...some of the pictures can be found in the pages of this newsletter. I don t know how to explain how to get there and which dirt road you have to take to the other dirt road to ultimately end at the shrine but I am truly blessed to have visited, and if you find yourselves close to Salem try to find a way to make a visit to the shrine. We then headed to the City of Rocks state park. The boys on the trip bonded instantaneously and were off at a glance Adventuring as they called it. Adventuring, soon turned into a non-stop game of war and unbeknownst to me, I had set up my tent right next to The Alamo. The boys played all day, the dads had some good fellowship, Fathers and sons bonded on hikes out into the rocks, and we wrapped up the night with a Rosary around the campfire. That all leads us to Sunday morning...where on that simple camping table, amongst the serenity of the desert, Father Bill held Mass for us! Simply inspiring! To top it all off, Father Bill ran with on the boy s penchant for war play and folded into his homily a lesson on being strong in Jesus with a story about a sniper in war. Ping...Ping...Ping...Bang! I told you the weekend ended with a bang :) Additionally, Brother Jimmy, Brother Jay, and I held an impromptu First Degree for a new Brother Knight from the Cathedral, Uriel. I know these are mere ramblings, but I ve got to say...god Bless our Priests, God Bless our Families, and God Bless our Brotherhood. Know what is important in life and spend your precious limited time on this good Earth accordingly...for God, for Family, for Your Fellow Man. Vivat Jesus! 3 Knights of Columbus Insurance Corner May is Disability Awareness Month While jobs may be safer in 2018, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related? The Knights have always sought to protect members families from the loss of a breadwinner. I m sure you know all about Father McGivney s vision for our insurance program - but you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn t work because of an illness. After all, the loss of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner s income. Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness? I ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn t yours ; it s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow. That s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. If you have a job, you must know about this coverage. Matthew Seltzer 2017 New Mexico Agent of the Year (575) matthew.seltzer@kofc.com matthewseltzer.com

7 From the Brothers Old Picacho Cemetery Cleanup Community Project (Part II) The Knights of Columbus Basilica de San Albino Council is continuing the cleanup efforts at the Old Picacho Cementer to finish removing weeds and brush. This cleanup will take place on Saturday May 19, 2018 beginning at 7:00 am. and all are invited to assist. Family, friends, neighbors, and all are welcome to help out. The directions to the ½ acre cemetery are; North on Shalem Colony Trail into Old Picacho Village, left on Ladera Ave., right on Trucha Rd. to the dead end (across the road from the Water Works). Rakes, hoes, saws, gloves, weed eaters, trailers, and volunteers to use them will be greatly welcomed. For more information and to sign up to help, please contact Jimmy Beasley at
8 From the Brothers Update Thanks you all for your continued support to the weekly parish food drive. We have recently surpassed 5,000 lbs of food collected during this past fraternal year (since July 2017). What an amazing accomplishment! Thank you to Father Christopher to suggesting the expansion of the food drive, and for getting the little kids involved with the food drive at Mass. A special thank you to the brothers who help collect and transport the food to the food banks in town. God Bless You All! Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?" "Because white is the color of happiness and today is the happiest day of her life," her mother tried to explain, keeping it simple. The child thought about this for a moment then asked, "So, why's the groom wearing black?
9 From the Brothers Knights on Bikes Brother Knights, I ask for your help to identify the members in your Council who ride a motorcycle and/or have already joined Knights on Bikes. You may recall that Knights on Bikes is a sanctioned group within the Knights of Columbus for our members who ride motorcycles. Under our new New Mexico President, Jim Hecker - we are working to consolidate and grow our membership in New Mexico. You may reach Jim Hecker by at diagojim@cloud.com. Interested members may also check our facebook page: Until I see you again, take care and God bless. Vivat Jesus! Jim McCabe, FICF, LUTC nmknights.com (505) James.McCabe@KofC.org Prayer to the Holy Family Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, In you we contemplate the splendor of true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may b places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen.
