6 Church Letter - March 2012 At the end of January I was privileged, with several others from the village, to visit George Assinder to celebrate his 107 th birthday. To reach 107 is an amazing achievement and he was in good form but, even though he is still enjoying life, there is always the question, Would I want to live to be 107. Several of us were voicing that thought and, inevitably, there were a variety of answers. We are told increasingly that life expectancy is getting longer although we all know people who have died at, what we would consider these days, a relatively young age. Of course to many of our predecessors anything over the age of 70 was considered exceptional and I was informed on a holiday in Turkey, less than a decade ago, that the average life expectancy for a man there was something like 54. Recently I have read a book that may help us think through this question. It was written by Jennifer Worth whose other memoirs were incorporated in the TV series which nearly 9 million viewers switched to on a Sunday evening during January and February - Call the Midwife. The title of the book I read was In the midst of life, part of a quotation from a prayer often used during The Committal at a funeral service. In the midst of life we are in death, it continues, to whom can we turn for help, but to you, Lord. Anyone who has read any of Jennifer Worth s books will know that she writes with realism, compassion and a great deal of reflection, as well as a lively wit. I found this book compelling reading, particularly as it deals with the question as to how we, in the UK, deal with death. I am not the only one who has found this book profoundly thought provoking and I quote from one of the reviews on Amazon with which I wholeheartedly concur. This courageous book should be read widely, especially by the medical profession and those who are elderly or have elderly relatives. Jennifer Worth takes the subject of dying and examines it with examples from her own acquaintance and in all its manifestations - bad deaths, good deaths, and resuscitation. Dying is something we all have to go through, but in the UK it is a subject that is rarely discussed..the book is not difficult or
7 macabre but, on the contrary, inspiring and the personal examples interesting. As usual, her style is personal and direct and it is very easy to empathise with those whose cases are being described. The fact that in the UK death is a subject rarely discussed is noted by Jennifer who, in writing of the reaction of a Greek Orthodox Archbishop from a country where death is treated much more holistically, states, death is almost regarded as an indecency, provoking the most profound embarrassment, and certainly not a subject to be talked about. There were some instances recorded of children being sent away so that they were not aware of the death of a close family member, the thought being that they should not see that sort of thing, and of how damaging that attitude can be to children who sometimes take on a great burden of guilt. Fortunately this is something that is being addressed more and more by the hospice movement and with initiatives that allow for care in the home for the dying. This book should be read or, at the very least, the subject discussed especially at a time when doctors, ambulance personnel and other medical practitioners are increasingly expected to maintain life at all costs, often out of fear of litigation as much as anything else. There are no defi nite conclusions in the book but it gives one food for thought and it may help people to discuss with their families the way in which they wish to die. Later, when I did some further research on Jennifer Worth, I discovered that she had died just before the filming of the television series Call the Midwife. What gave me great comfort was to read that she had died after a short illness, cared for at home by her family. Having read her book I know that is something that she would have wished for. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. Revd. Janice Green From the Registers Confirmation Fred Gregory 23 January St. Mary s Great Parndon
