All Welcome Kwa Mkono Quiz Another successful quiz was run by Mel and friends on Saturday night, raising Unfortunately fewer people were able to attend this time so we are giving out the date of the next one now for your diaries!! Please start organising teams now, for: 7.30 pm on Saturday 17th October 2015 at Christ Church. It will cost 7.50 including a ploughman's supper. Remember all profits go to benefit the disabled children at the hostel in Tanzania. This cake was made and decorated by Caroline and Pippa Penn, to help us celebrate the work of the parish in the past year as we looked forward to the coming year at our APCM and AGM. It was enjoyed with a cup of tea after a short service.
2 St Geogorious Jacobite Syrian Orthodox congregation s use of Christ Church for part of its Easter service. They are based at St Michael s and All Angels, Durban Rd, Watford for their normal services. They have used St Mark s during the last 2-3 years whenever St Michael s has not been available. This is to say a very big thank you to Rev Duncan Campbell and all the members of Christ Church for the help and support given to Omashola Harriet Tetsola and Leah Glazebrook during their confirmation on the 4th April Also thank you to Vicky and everyone that sent cards. From the families of Harriet and Leah Congratulations to Claire and Jonathan Locke who married at the Lancaster Road United Reformed Church, Enfield on Friday 24th April Wishing them a long, healthy and happy future together. 3 Over Sixties Spring Party 18 th April 2015 Spring definitely sprung at this year s Over Sixties Party and a good time was had by all! The tables were bedecked with fresh daffodils, floral serviettes, paper butterflies (beautifully decorated by the Brownies) and bright yellow itineraries. Pompoms, flowers and floral bunting also brightened up the hall. The quiz focused on flowers and the members of the committee were recognisable by their floral attire and flowers in their hair, with the exception of Bob who looked rather dapper in his velvet bow tie. Even the entertainment had a spring theme. All guests listened intently as Chris Long demonstrated a floral arrangement in a basket. The result looked beautiful, the basket was raffled and the lucky winner was Joyce O Brien. This was followed by a sing-along with the Leggatts Warblers who dressed as eye-catching Pearly Kings and Queens. Although the traditional cockney songs were sung, to keep in with the theme of the party we joined in with songs such as Tulips from Amsterdam. The Leggatts Warblers even got many of us up on the floor dancing walking sticks and all - as we sauntered along and did the Lambeth Walk. We think that this party may be a first for female Master of Ceremonies and our male waiter with a bow tie - thanks to Val Hubbard, Mavis Garrett and Bob Mackie. The party committee, namely Lynne Mallows, Moira Morgan and Jenny Sleeper *, would not have managed without the help of other willing volunteers namely: Amanda Brackman, a friend of Lynne s, Sue Pankhurst (Reader) and Margaret Wellings. Our thanks also go to the drivers, without whom many of the guests would not have been able to attend the party, to those of you who generously donated raffle prizes and to everyone who kindly donated the delicious trifles or cakes that were enjoyed by the 45 guests (as well as the committee and helpers of course!). Lastly, if you came to the party, thank you for your support it was much appreciated and we look forward to seeing you next year. *Sadly Chris Woodward, who was initially on the party committee, was unable to be present on the day owing to illness in the family but our thoughts and prayers were with her.
4 Gather Round Ladies get crafty! As usual, Gather Round Ladies has been meeting on the second Tuesday of the month, either in Christ Church Hunt Hall or in the choir vestry of Christ Church when the halls were full of paying users! In February we brought photos of ourselves from our school days; it turns out that most of us were brought up in the local area and some of us have hardly changed! For the last 2 meetings we have been trying to tap into our creative skills: March saw us making Hedgehogs from unwanted books, you may have seen a couple of examples working hard as card holders on the Kwa Mkono stall in the Church but we had a lovely array (the official group noun for hedgehogs, though they are also known as a prickle) of hedgehogs when we had finished, each with their own personality as you can see in the photo! April saw us gathering to create flower arrangements. Lorraine talked us through creating her arrangement and then we tried to copy her; they all had the same basic pattern but the results were diverse and we had lovely arrangements to take home. Our upcoming meetings will be very different as we have two speakers visiting to talk to us: on May 12th Brian Dorsett- Bailey, who is a trustee of the British Antarctic Monument Trust, will be talking about his recent visit to the continent and the trust s work; then on June 9th Mike Barnes will speak about his trip to Iran. Mike did a fascinating talk on his trip to Venezuela last year so we re very happy to welcome him again. Any woman who would like to join us at 8pm on the second Tuesday of the month would be very welcome. 6 CHRIST CHURCH & ST MARK S, WATFORD MISSION STATEMENT WE ARE people who are drawn together by our Christian belief and our response to God. WE BELIEVE that God reveals himself to us in many ways as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and that people can live in a loving relationship with God and with each other in Christ. WE AIM to follow Christ's teaching and example, living a full life in every community in which we are involved, sharing our faith with others through example, worship and service. We are a Fairtrade parish. We use only fairly traded tea and coffee at our church events. Fairtrade stalls are held after the main morning services: at St Mark s on the 1st Sunday in the month and at Christ Church on the 3rd Sunday in the month. NEXT EDITION The next edition of the Information Sheet will be published in June, to cover all events in July and August. If you have any dates or information for inclusion, please send them to the Parish Office. Send in your articles, dates or information either: In written format and put through the Parish Office letter box by 12th June, or Via to ccwatford@btinternet.com, or Simply telephone Lynne on to discuss options.
