2 Taking the time 2 SINGALONG! I have finally disposed of all the cardboard packaging (much of it from Amazon other providers are available) and we have got some sense of order back at home! However, visitors to the Rectory during January have often been surprised that the tree (admittedly not in its prime!) is still in place; as are the decorations, cards and lights. There is a tradition that decorations are taken down on the eve of Epiphany (twelfth night) and there is another tradition that they stay up until Candlemas (Feb 2). Candlemas commemorates the visit of Jesus to the Temple as an infant and is the final end of the Christmas Season. After Candlemas the tree and crib will be taken down at church as will the star on the church tower (which should prove to be a chilly experience for me!) Many of us have long since finished our Christmases and we struggle through January - some of us dry, and many of us depressed by the continued bad news about Brexit! January can be a depressing time of year so I think its important to keep the Christmas cheer going on as long as possible it is hard when society moves on so quickly to the next thing but it is valuable to remember that Christmas might be at the end of December but its effects should last much longer. The poem by WH Davies springs to mind: What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare? No time to stand beneath the boughs, And stare as long as sheep and cows: No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass: No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night: No time to turn at Beauty s glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance: No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began? A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. If we find ourselves caught up in the relentless business of life and the depressing darkness of January it can be helpful to take the time to reflect, stop and stare and turn at beauty s glance. Our church building is usually open during the day and is silent and peaceful and open to all who want to re-enter that Christmas peace we enjoy so fleetingly. 3 Notice A Service for Everyone. Friday March 1 will be the World Day of Prayer; for everyone. This year the focus is on Slovenia. There will be a service at 10a.m. in St. James the Great, East Malling, and another at 7:30pm, in Ss. Peter and Paul, Leybourne, with Slovenian refreshments. All are welcome. Curate: You may have noticed a new face at the front of the church recently. We are very fortunate to welcome The Revd Rosheen Browning as our curate until Easter. Rosheen has served most of her curacy (first post) at Paddock Wood and is going to finish it with us. This will give her experience of a different way of being church and give us the wonderful opportunity of experiencing the ministry of a different priest. 4 Leyara Active Retirement Association (LeyARA) We would like to invite retired and semi-retired non-members to join us at the Village Hall on the first & fourth Thursdays of the month at 2 4pm for games, crafts & chat plus Bingo on the third Thursday with prizes!
