6 Church Letter - April 2013 By the time you read this letter the Lenten fast will be a thing of the past as, no doubt, at least some of the Easter eggs that you received will be, and we will be heading in the Church year for the next major festival, Passover. Christmas, Easter and Passover, or Whitsun as it used to be called, are the three major festivals of the Christian year when those who have been confirmed should attend church and receive communion. They are celebrations and commemorations of the good news that we believe. You will no doubt have noticed the rather busy time I have had since Christmas with what seems like so many more funerals than usual. Inevitably these, and Margaret Chapman s stroke, have made me reflect on my own mortality. I was struck by a news report about how Britain has slipped down the league on longer life expectancy with Italians now expected to live longer than we do with an average life expectancy of 81.5years, as opposed to ours of 79.9 years. The report made me laugh because the reporter said from avoidable deaths which suggested to me that he was thinking we could avoid something that is very much part of life, no matter how much we would like to avoid that reality. Celebrating Easter and Passover in the Church calendar highlights the hope and reassurance Christians have that death is not the end. We have the account of Jesus resurrection at Easter and the transformation of his disciples from a motley group of frightened people into a united force to spread the good news that God loves and cares for us all the time and Jesus, his Son, came to be our Saviour. They remind us that what may seem to be an apparently hopeless situation can be transformed into something meaningful. One of the stories I give to younger members of a bereaved family, is Water Bugs and Dragonflies. It is a parable as it were of life and death and the Christian hope. Doris Stickney tells of a group of rather ugly water bugs that live at the bottom of a pond who note that every so often one of their number disappears never to return again. They make a pact that the next one to go will
7 return and tell them where they have gone. Then one day one of the water bugs is drawn to climb a stalk that leads up through the water s surface. After its journey, it rests for a while and when it awakes it finds that suddenly it is able to fly, darting and swooping above the water of its previous habitation. It has been transformed into a beautiful winged creature, a dragonfly. It can see itself in the water s surface but it can no longer break through this to return to its friends any more than they can reach out to him. Doris Stickney s story ends with, I can t return! he said in dismay. At least, I tried. But I can t keep my promise. Even if I could go back, not one of the water bugs would know me in my new body. I guess I ll just have to wait until they become dragonflies too. Then they ll understand what has happened to me, and where I went. We know that Jesus returned to his disciples and gave them a promise that he would take them to be where he was and we know he kept his promise to those who followed him in ways that they could not have anticipated, sharing a meal with them after his resurrection, suddenly appearing in locked room and revealing himself in the breaking of bread. So why should we doubt him. His resurrection is the evidence for our belief and the transformation of those who followed him, which we celebrate at Passover, shows us the way he can continue to work in our lives. 8 The Olive Branch in the Hallingburys On 5th March we were given a talk by Bob Reed, who is Wildlife Officer and Chairman of the Friends of Pishiobury Park. He showed us pictures of people who had lived in the house. It is thought that the title of Pishiobury comes from the name of a Roman General Piso. Eastwick Lodge is on Pisho Park which was the hunting park for Pishiobury. The park is well used by dog walkers and others and when there is snow it is a popular place for sledging. Mr Reed hopes that it will be given Local Nature Reserve status. Our next meeting will be on April 9th at 2.15pm in St. Mary's Church when Mr Trevor Myatt will be telling us about C.H.E.S.S. (Churches' Homeless Emergency Support Scheme). Anyone who is interested in hearing this talk is welcome to come. Nita Sylvester NCT Toddler Group Bumps, Babies and Beyond The local NCT Toddler group meets in our lovely Great Hallingbury Village Hall. There are toys for all ages and a seperate area for babies so they don't get trampled. The cost is just 1.50 per child which includes a drink and snack for them and you! We will on occasion be visited by outside companies who will be giving us taster sessions, haircuts and photos. For more information please contact us at bishopsstortford@nct.org.uk.
