6 Calling all bakers and cake lovers! Have a brew for St Clare St Clare has launched an exciting new community fundraising campaign the Big Brew! We are inviting all our supporters from across West Essex and East Herts to raise a cup of tea with friends, to raise money for St Clare. Sharing a cup of tea and cake with friends is something we all like to do it brings friends, neighbours and communities together for some quality time. What better way to make those cake calories count than by turning your usual meet-ups into a Big Brew for St Clare! All the care St Clare provides is completely free of charge for the families who need us. We are there to support people and their loved ones through one of life s hardest journeys. With limited NHS funding we are tasked with raising more than 2.4million every year to keep our services running. The idea of organising a huge community event or running a marathon or doing a skydive is just too daunting for many. But they want to know how they can help St Clare in other ways. The beauty of the Big Brew is that your event can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish. Whether you raise 20 or 200, every penny counts. Taking turns with your friends to host a Big Brew at different people s houses each month is a great way to socialise for a good cause while eating cake! Or host a Big Brew for St Clare as part of the Queen s 90th birthday celebrations, the perfect opportunity to raise a cup of tea to our Queen whilst raising funds for St Clare, eating guilt-free goodies because you know every penny raised will help your local hospice care for those in need. A Big Brew resource pack is available on the St Clare website or contact St Clare Community Fundraiser, Dani De ath, on or or dani@stclarehospice.org.

8 Church Letter - June 2016 It s that time of year again when so many of us are absorbed by Wimbledon, waiting to see if our favourite player wins or loses. For a fortnight our thoughts will be about tennis and strawberries and cream teas. No doubt some of us will have been fortunate enough to watch matches live, turning our head from one side to another as we have kept our eye on the ball, while others will have watched the television with as much attention to how the ball is played, keeping a record of the score. The tennis players themselves will certainly have been keeping their eyes on the ball, trying to make sure that they hit it well and make a winning shot. In life we need to keep our eye on the ball to make sure that we do what we need, in an appropriate manner, to achieve good results. It is very easy to get distracted and miss opportunities or fail to do something properly. I am sure that as a child I read a fable about a man who, out walking one night, was so intent on looking upwards at the stars he fell into a well. He should have kept his eye on where he was going rather than being distracted by something else, no matter how attractive, and of course we are told in the Bible by Jesus that, having set our hand to the plough, we should not look back over our shoulder, the result is always a crooked furrow. It is all about keeping your eye on what is most important and following it through. I wonder if there are times when the church has taken its eye off the ball, becoming distracted by all that is going on around it, perhaps becoming fearful of failure and as a result has taken its eye off the ball lost sight of what it was designed to be and do. We have just celebrated Pentecost, the time when the Holy Spirit breathed new life in the disciples who, without the constant presence of Christ with them, were apt to lose sight of the hope that they had. With the coming of the Holy Spirit they experienced the indwelling of the Spirit of God in their very being and suddenly found that they could do all that they were meant

9 to do, loving one another, healing those who were hurting in body, mind or spirit and above all proclaiming the Good News that God loves us and sent his own son to show us what he is like and how much he wants to be our friend. With this spiritual renewal they discovered that they were able to focus on loving God with all of their being and loving their neighbour as themselves, which is all that we are called to do. And they found themselves telling others their own stories of how they had experienced Christ in their lives. Perhaps we are sometimes too concerned with other things and lose sight of what God has done for us and simply telling others our own stories which is, so often, what will inspire them. We don t need to do anything exceptional, perform magic tricks or present a PowerPoint presentation, it is all about remaining focused and, as a result, letting things happen.
