2 W E L C O M E TO THE P A R I S H OF S T. BE R N A R D! Dear Friends, It was brought to my attention after Masses last weekend that some of you discovered some printed literature on your windshields as you returned to your vehicles. While unfortunate, this happens from time to time. The evil one will employ many methods to try and dissuade us from the truth, and Lent is a perfect opportunity to do so. I am sorry that it happened, and we can use this as an opportunity to pray for those who are misguided. I want to stress to everyone the importance of securing your vehicles while in our parking lot. We had a number of situations last week involving three different stolen vehicles. Two vehicles were stolen from people at the Goodman Community Center, and a third was stolen from a resident on Corry St. When leaving your vehicle, please make sure that any valuables are on your person or locked away in an area that is not visible to preying eyes. If you operate your vehicle with a key FOB, make sure to take your FOB with you. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, be sure to bring it to my attention. Safety is a number one priority, and if we all stay vigilant and work together, we can minimize the opportunity for a crime to occur. Thanks for your help. A number of you have asked me about the appointment of the new bishop, and if we ll be getting a bishop soon. I m afraid only the Holy Spirit knows the answer to that question! The diocese of Memphis, Tenn. recently received a new bishop. They had been without a bishop since October 24th. For the faithful in Memphis, it was a relatively short wait - a bit over four months. However, a few other dioceses here in the US have been waiting more than a year. I m not entirely sure what criteria determines which diocese receives a bishop before another... it s clearly not a process of longest wait, first appointment. It is entirely conjecture on my part, but if I were to estimate the time of the arrival of our new bishop, I would say December, or perhaps early We could be on the short list and have a bishop as soon as Memphis did, or we could be waiting a bit longer. It largely depends upon the progress of the appointment process and the Holy Spirit. We continue to entrust this intention to the Spirit and pray that He will bring us a leader who is pastoral, has a zeal for the salvation of souls, who loves the Sacred Liturgy and has a deep desire to help us grow in faith. All in good time! In his meeting with the Camillian Charismatic Family this past week, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of tenderness in living the Christian life. Christianity without tenderness does not work. Tenderness is a properly Christian attitude. It is also the very marrow of our encounter with people who suffer. When you experience too much of a given thing, you tend to build up resistance - much like a tolerance to a medica- tion that is built up in the body as it is taken over many years. There comes a point where a new medication must be introduced because the old medication is no longer effective in achieving its purpose. I think we can become that way when we watch the news. We hear about a mass shooting, we hear of tragedies involving hundreds of lives lost, we see devastation left in the wake of natural disasters. How do these things affect us, friends? Do they move us to prayer or perhaps some financial assistance if we re in a position to do that, or do we simply shrug it off and go about our business? Perhaps we adopt the attitude like the righteous tax collector in the gospels, who says, Thank God it s not me. If this is our response, perhaps we need to reevaluate how we embrace these situations in our lives, and really think about how they affect the lives of people just like you and I. That s the tenderness Pope Francis speaks of, and he is certainly right when he says that it s being eroded by indifference. The gospel stories of the Good Shepherd and the Lord s encounter with those who had lost loved ones were powerful moments - not only for those who experienced those encounters directly, but for those who were gathered around and witnessed what was happening. It was a teaching moment for the Lord, as He showed them what true love and tenderness looks like. We are called to imitate this way of life in our own lives of faith, friends. Spend some time in prayer this week and bring to the Lord those things in your life that could use a bit more in the area of tenderness. We have all experienced the tender mercy of Jesus through His passion and cross. We, too, are witnesses of what His tenderness and mercy can bring about. Let us imitate what Christ has brought to us through our own personal encounters with Him. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this year s Annual Catholic Appeal. As of this writing, we have pledged 84% of our goal of $39, We have paid on 43% of the pledges, or $16,981. Your generous support of the Diocese is greatly appreciated. If you didn t have time to make a pledge, you can still do so! The easiest way is to make an online pledge by visiting and clicking on the ACA Donate link on the left. You are also welcome to write a check payable to the Diocese of Madison. Place it in an envelope with your name and Annual Catholic Appeal on the envelope s front. We ll make sure it gets to the right place. While we re crunching numbers, I ll also provide a brief update on our progress with the Priests for Our Future Campaign. We pledged 136% of our goal of $435,000. We have paid on 120% of the pledges, or $522,941. Thanks so much for your faithfulness in continuing to pay on your pledges. We re at the point now where we re getting larger rebate checks back, which is being put to great use for the many buildings and grounds projects we re working to complete. We couldn t do it without you! Blessed Lent, Fr. Michael
