3 FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE This Sunday we begin Catholic Schools Week at St. Mary s. Do you consider yourself curious and want to know what happens during Catholic Schools Week in 2017? The National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) promotes National Catholic Schools Week as the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2017 is January 29 - February 4. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2017 is Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. We will have our school choirs joining us at Mass today. The choir composed of students from the Primary Grade Center, children in Pre-K third grade will be singing at the 10:30 AM Mass. Students from the Upper Grade Center, children in 4 th 8 th grade, will be singing at our 12:00 Noon Mass. Thanks to Mr. Randy Manges and to Ms. Laura Rollick our school music teachers for working with our school students, guiding them and inspiring them to praise God through sung prayer. I am sure those worshipping at Mass at 10:30 AM and 12:00 Noon will be touched by the energy and voices of our school choirs. There are a variety of events taking place throughout the week at our school. You can check the school website for the current list of events taking place this week, Included in today s bulletin is the letter from Cardinal Cupich, read at Masses last week, regarding our involvement in Renew my Church. The parishes of Holy Cross in Deerfield, St. Patrick s in Lake Forest and St. Mary s are considered the local grouping. We will continue to be led by the Holy Spirit, work together as this process unfolds in the months and years ahead. In his letter, Cardinal Cupich states that we will all be asked to sacrifice. Sacrifice for another is easier when done out of love. May we be open to the sacrifices that will be asked and required of us all as we work with the Cardinal and one another to have God Renew our Church. You are invited to be part of the success of the 12 th Annual Ted s Diaper Drive. This diaper drive is in honor of baby Ted who was born still 13 years ago. It has provided well over 50,000 diapers in addition to baby wipes and monetary donations over the past twelve years to families and babies in need. All donations go to the Diaper Depot at Catholic Charities in Waukegan, IL. This drive is dedicated to all those who have lost a child. Donations of diapers and Pull-Ups in larger sizes, baby wipes, new and already opened packages of diapers are welcome. Please put opened packages or loose diapers in a plastic Ziploc bag. You can donate by dropping off items at the following addresses: 280 Hickory Ct., Lake Bluff or 617 E. Prospect Lake, Bluff. You can even order online and have the items delivered to these two addresses. If you want to support this Drive by making a monetary donation, do so directly, payable to Catholic Charities Diaper Depot and mail it to either address. (You will receive a tax donation letter from the Diaper Depot.) If it is easiest for you to bring them to St. Mary s, we will make sure they get delivered. Ted s Diaper Drive continues through February 10 th. Thanks for your kindness and generosity to this cause. God bless you in being instruments of Christ s peace!

4 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL archchicago.org Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, As a new year begins, I want to assure you of my prayers for you, your families, and your parish communities. I also want to share some important information about Renew My Church. As you may already know, Renew My Church is an archdiocesan initiative that involves all the people of the archdiocese and their faith communities. The goal of Renew My Church is to make our parishes more vital and more sustainable. We do this not on our own initiative but in response to the call of Christ, which was first heard by those disciples recounted in today s gospel. The call is the same as it was in those early days of the Church: to be His disciples and take responsibility for carrying on His mission in our time. The place to start is by working together to make our parishes vibrant communities that form missionary disciples of Jesus. This will also mean being realistic about our limited human and material resources and evaluating how our present structures may need to be organized differently to keep pace with changing realities. A very important part of the process of Renew My Church is the parish groupings that will work to plan for the future and discern where God is leading us. After receiving consultation and feedback from you, the priests of the diocese, and parish pastoral councils, we are announcing the groupings today. Your parish will be part of a grouping that will enable you to assess, plan, and discern how best to meet the needs of the future in a way that is both reasonable and in conformity with God s will for us. Each grouping will have guidance for its process of reflection and discernment. Everything, however, begins with building relationships across parishes in a given grouping. That means getting to know each other and perhaps sharing some common projects or events, such as retreats, lectures, or community service for those in need. With future guidance and facilitation, this will develop in more specific planning and discernment directions. Today, your pastor will share a list of the parishes in your grouping. Renew My Church will undoubtedly involve leaving behind familiar patterns and demand that we move outside our comfort zones. In a word, it will require sacrifice, but that has always been true for the Church whenever we have taken up new challenges. I am convinced that we are up to the task, and willing to do whatever it takes to build our capacity to pass on our faith to future generations. That is what is at stake in the Renew My Church process. I encourage you to become involved and pray for its success. Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

5 Readings for Ordinary Time Mon., Jan. 30: Heb 11:32-40; Mk 5:1-20 Then they began to beg [Jesus] to leave their district. After Jesus spent the night calming the storm and his disciples he finally comes ashore and encounters a possessed man who is an object of both pity and terror to the surrounding commu-nity. Jesus delivers this unfortunate from his many demons, demolishing a herd of swine in the process, and the villagers, upon hearing of this miracle, beg Jesus to leave. Why? Maybe they can t afford to lose more sheep? Whatever the reason, the only one apparently converted by the action of Jesus is the demoniac himself. Why are we so slow to accept the good news and so quick to embrace the bad? What the Letter to the Hebrews says about the faithful good ones seems to be true today: The world is not worthy of them. Dear God, may I em-brace the good and calmly, fearlessly reject what is not of you. Tues., Jan. 31: Heb 12:1-4; Mk 5:21-43 John Bosco, priest Daughter, your faith has saved you. Today s Gospel is rich in de-tail. It is the story of two daughters. There is a twelve-year-old child at the point of death, the daughter of Jairus, the synagogue official, whose love for her is so great that he humbles himself to come to Jesus. And the woman who has suffered from an issuance of blood for twelve years, a state that renders her unclean. We don t know for sure, but it could be that one of the duties of Jairus was to prevent this woman from enter-ing the synagogue; this woman whom Jesus calls, daugh-ter. (It s the only place in Scripture where Jesus addresses a woman as such.) I like to imagine that Jairus, so moved by the healing of both daughters, would relax his standards just a bit. But who knows? Would I? Lord Jesus, give me the grace to greet all whom I encounter as worthy brothers and sisters. Wed., Feb. 1: Heb 12:4-7, 11-15; Mk 6:1-6 He was not able to perform any mighty deed there... We limit Jesus by our willingness to buy into what he can do. If we doubt his power or motive, we create our own stumbling block. Our resistance is not unlike that which Jesus encountered returning home. Accepting Jesus as someone other than Mary s son would force his old neighbors out of their familiar roles. Acknowledging Jesus potential to truly shake things up would necessitate accepting that they must expand their thinking. If we validate that Jesus is not just a carpenter, then we must also take another look at others we ve conveniently labeled. This necessitates being more understanding and welcoming. Until we move out of our comfort zone, we ll always restrict who Jesus is and what he can do. Help me to know you, Lord. Thurs., Feb. 2: Mal 3:1-4; Heb 2:14-18; Lk 2:22-40 or 2:22-32 Presentation of the Lord... a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel... Commonly called Candlemas, today s feast celebrates Christ, the Light of the World, entering the Temple of Jerusalem. Simeon and Anna, two devout and elderly believers, wait in patient expectation. Their tireless practice of prayer and fasting gives light to recognition. Time spent in contemplation affords them the ability to see the Messiah in these humble circumstances. Simeon s words shed light both on the child s importance and on the sacrifice to come. This proclamation illuminates our ability to see the Lord in unexpected and paradoxical ways. May we meet the Christ Child in the poor, lowly and small. Fri., Feb. 3: Heb 13:1-8; Mk 6:14-29 Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels. One of the simplest and most effective forms of evangelization is kindness. When we are pleasant, generous and attentive, we share the love of God in our lives and extend it to others. Christian hospitality recognizes the value of everyone we encounter as a precious child of God. Being too busy to greet others or inquire about their wellbeing devalues them and us. Haste makes us self-absorbed. We may be the only one to pause and validate that person s existence and dignity. Such moments make it hard to determine who the angel is. Both parties truly benefit from the grace of such encounters. Lord, help me to greet others with your love and hospitality. Sat., Feb. 4: Heb 13:15-17; Mk 6: and they had no opportunity even to eat. We re constantly bombarded with needs some extremely urgent but neglecting ourselves benefits no one. Jesus and the apostles make time to get away for some quiet time, even though their respite is brief. If we go nonstop without renewing, reflecting and praying about how and why we serve, our actions become robotic and empty. We may still reach out in duty, but we risk becoming gruff or resentful. That attitude serves no one. Our unmet basic needs distract us from fully engaging in genuine acts of love and compassion. There will always be those who seek our aid; we should be moved to respond like Jesus, but we must also show some care and respect for ourselves. Only then can our hearts guide our actions. Thank you, Lord, for times of refreshment and relaxation. 9 Church of St. Mary Religious Education Program Throughout the month of January, as our second grade Religious Education students continue their preparation for First Eucharist, Father Michael Nacius, Father Brendan Guilfoil and Father Michael Grzesik have visited the classes to help the children understand more about this special sacrament. The priests are instructing the children how the cross is a reminder that Jesus died for us and that He gave His life as a sacrifice for all people. The second graders are also learning about the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist through the story of the Last Supper and rituals of the Mass. Through these lessons, the children will come to understand that the Eucharist unites us more intimately with God and with one another. 12 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Times Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. MATTHEW 5:3 This one confuses people. Replace the word humble for poor and it makes more sense. People that are humble recognize their dependence on God and trust that He will provide all that they need. Unfortunately, for many of us, pride and ego enters our lives and we think we can live without God. Remember God first in all circumstances.
