1 Dover District May Newsletter Volume 16, Issue 5 The Discipline of Why Dr. John Ewart, our district consultant, taught the Dover District Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) for two days. He also presented a workshop on Strategic Planning that was open to all clergy and laity. I have been receiving a series of exciting responses from those who participated, especially in the April 30th workshop. Most of the pastors and lay participants shared with me how thoughtprovoking the discipline of Why was for them. Ewart said, We must ask the right questions in the right order: Why? always precedes Who? which always precedes What? which always precedes How? Do you realize what a difficult discipline this is? Why is the church? Why are you here? Why do you do such ministry? As for me, this difficult discipline of Why reveals the fact that most churches are stuck with some myths that run counter to why the CHURCH is. We tend to think that if our church isn t growing, it s because of an absence of desire for the church to grow, or a lack of love for the church, or a lack of faithfulness. Please check out Brad Waggoner who says, A Great Commission leader is one who grasps the reality that success can be evaluated only by a clear theological understanding of why the Church exists. I will always keep reminding myself and all of you of the discipline of Why as we journey together to revitalize our churches in proactive and intentional ways. We all will come to know that church health is a constant, never-ending process, not an event or program. It is a very intentional, never -ending spiral in which every church should be engaged through the five phases: assessment, identification, vision development, adjustment and implementation. Let us always remember the significance of our United Methodist Church insignia-the Cross (Christ) and Flame (Holy Spirit). This emblem is a reminder of Why and Who we are. How do we want to keep the living flame of Christ s mission burning by the power of the Holy Spirit? We will get there when we focus on the mission of Christ to bring glory to God. This is WHY THE CHURCH IS! So let s be the CHURCH! Kyung Hee 사경희 The Rev. Dr. Kyung Hee Sa Dover District Superintendent For Christ s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all

3 Dover District Now Has 21 Trained Consultants to Help Churches with Strategic Planning Dr. John Ewart instructed 21 Dover District lay and clergy members about Strategic Church Planning on April 28 and 29, 2016 at Wyoming UMC in Dover. The Rev. Steve Ackerman and The Rev. Dr. Kyung Hee Sa are excited to see their shared vision for revitalized churches in the Dover District take a big step closer to becoming a reality. On April 28 and 29, 2016 three lay persons and eighteen pastors received two days of intensive training to become church consultants. The newly trained group is called the Dover District Strategic Leadership Team (DDSLT). The twenty-one DDSLT members were trained by Dr. John Ewart who is a Seminary Professor from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Dr. John is currently serving as a professor and missional consultant to church leaders around the world. Over the span of his career he has directly consulted with hundreds of churches while also serving as a pastor for many years. The group met for two full days in the music room of Wyoming UMC in Dover. They plan to consult with and offer support to Pastors, church leaders, and congregations in the Dover District. Their goal is to offer friendship, prayer, teaching, and a five phase process that helps churches do their own Strategic Planning. Their prayer is that all the churches of the Dover District will experience more vital and healthy relationships with Christ, with church members, and with the community. After the team was trained on Thursday and Friday, Dr. John Ewart spoke to about 150 persons in an Open Training session in the sanctuary of Calvary UMC in Milford, Delaware from 9am to noon The Rev. Kyung Hee Sa and Dr. John Ewart praise God in a sanctuary full of leaders on the morning of April 30, 2016 for the DDSLT Open Training event at Calvary UMC in Milford, Delaware.
